The next leak to deal with is #2 on my priority list -- the Ford Lehman 2712e engine coolant leak. It's been leaking and I can't see where it's coming from.... so I embark on a long journey of overhauling the engine room. I take a trip to Current, makers of Silent Running SR1000, a sound-deadening paint as a way to further reduce the noise & vibration.

I'm a big fan of T-bolt hose clamps. I've been gradually replacing the screw style with T-bolt style. The peace-of-mind T-bolts provide is worth the extra cost. Great looking engine room when your done!!!!!

Great job! Removing all that old insulation looks like it was a bear of a job and then cleaning it all up and painting and then reinstalling new insulation looks so tedious and time consuming but the end result looks so much better. It's good to do this now while you're still young and flexible, because once you advance in age you won't be able to do that anymore. Please tell Captain Q I said hi, and Hope he's well❤

Wow, what a transformation of the engine room. Let there be light - everywhere! Glad Betsy was their to help out getting the job done. The sound deadening job will pay off big time with reducing noise and heat if you have good ventilation.

There seems to be decent ventilation with some exterior louvers and a 4” hose. There is a blower motor setup too… whether it works is a different story… good thing to think about while I’m sitting around down there! Thanks Brian!

Randay excellent work for a jack of all trades master of none like the rest of us. My opinion, the stainless clamps pictured are not radiator clamps rather they chew into the rubber over time causing leaks. The more you tighten the greater the chance of future leakage. Pop open your auto hood and look at the radiator clamps These are what you need More expensive but what the job calls for. Time & Tide wait for no one.
@YachtHunters

yes... thanks very much for pointing me in the right direction. Another viewer suggested all new hoses which are actually not that expensive ($90USD for the full kit) so it seems like new hoses and clamps could really make things even better. cheers!

The pressure tester on a cold engine doesn't always get all the leaks because the coolant acts different when hot and moving. But 9 times out of 10 you got them.

Outstanding video! Keep up the positive attitude and nothing can stop you!!!!! Amazing application for Velcro and led lights... Question if you hung sheets covered in SR 1000 in the enginroom ... I think of hanging sound damping panels... Would it absorb a reasonable amount of sound? HOW much would it heat up the room? lol just thinking in side the box... :-)
@YachtHunters
@YachtHunters 3 месяца назад
Travis from Silent Running said painting the sound panel sheets was totally acceptable. The heat gain is supposed to be around 1 degree F - so essentially negligible. I'd think about adding that additional layer if it's not as quiet as I would like when I fire up the motor this spring. I think the one big appeal of SR1000 is that it changed the tone & dampened the vibration. It was quieter but not massively muted.... the difference for me was fewer rattles and lower/duller sounds. Thanks for the words of encouragement!! cheers
@vincentdsnt
@vincentdsnt 4 месяца назад
It looks like you are doing a great job........I did sound proofing for Ford In Dearborn on prototype Lincoln Continentals then later on F350 diesels. You can also slide a blanket under the engine you will have to replace it from oils but make it removable. You can do the same over the engine blanket the valve cover and down a few inches........Think of a tent over the top on the valve cover. Look under the hood of an f-250/350 diesel the blanket affixed to the hood and well in the engine compartment. You have a good start you can add on later. If you can deaden the sound before it gets to those well deadened walls that's a big plus........Like I say if you are not happy with the level of noise do some experimenting . Good Luck.

Cork and Basalt matting are both good for soundproof they are also fire ressistant or proof.. Insulate the engine box and isolate it from the hull. They mount heavy machinery on thick cork pads ressistant to oil etc. They do caps with a hard plastic inner shell not like a proper hard hat but great for avoiding bashing your scalp on protuding screws bolts and cables.
@YachtHunters
@YachtHunters 4 месяца назад
interesting... I think the legacy mat was basalt (the distinctive yellow) and the one that disintegrated on the doors might have been cork. It will be interesting to see how this mat + foam + silent running performs. I know just how loud it was before so I'm very hopeful I see a reduction. I like the idea of isolating the engine and reducing the vibration at the source. I also like the plastic cap in a hat... thankfully the baseball cap worked pretty well. For most of this winter, I've been using the knitted cap which has been great. great stuff, CSSW!! thanks
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 4 месяца назад
@@YachtHunters Basalt mat tends to be dark grey or slight brown tinge and literally like a carpet.. they also use it to wrap exhaust manifolds to reduce heating in the engine bay and exaust noise .. See Basalt ... And Guru ... Safe less itchy and inert. Cork can be had in many thicknesses but theres a u tube clip showing a sample with a bunsen burner flame being played on a section for minutes ..it charcoals but doesnt ignite. The other thing is any smoke is none toxic and theres no off gassing like you get with foams and plastics. U tube keeps deleting links/shares..its frustrating 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hi Ran Day .Well I guess we can't call it the dungeon room anymore .I'm very glad you were able to find those pesky water leaks and were so easy to fix ( big bonus there .) Also with the sound deadening Paint .the hardest chore was in the prep As always .Overall the change is dramatic .and one of the most dreaded jobs of owning an old boat is now done .I tip my cap to you for another well gone job .O and one thing more as a young man I did some filming myself .so I can appreciate the time it takes to do all the set up's and filming and editing .If only they had invented all this digital stuff back in my day 😂O well .

I really enjoy both fixing the boat and putting together the episode to share so I'm grateful that you are enjoying it. It's definitely taken me a bit longer to put these episodes together as they are all a little different and take days/weeks/months to pull together all the matieral. Cheers, Logan!

Having spent many years installing various noise reduction products I was interested to see the paint product. Unfortunately the factory test was questionable as the chap had his hand on the 'quieter' box. That would definitely reduce the noise level. However the silver lining you used will reduce your noise problem. The entire room looks great. Well done.
@YachtHunters
@YachtHunters 4 месяца назад
I’m a skeptic as well… it’s part of the reason I made the trek down to see it in person. I can tell you the demo was quite loud in person and his hand being on it did not appear to alter it. Looking at the footage I can see how it might appear like a snake oil demo though. Those boxes were quite heavy steel diamond plate (guessing 150lbs each) so I would think his hand would have to weigh a lot to have an impact on the noise. I think the biggest thing that struck me was the pitch and reduced vibration and not necessarily the total loudness reduction. (It was still loud) Seeing the thickness after applying it, I can see how it might provide some vibration dampening as it’s appears like a 1mm rubber coating over everything. The proof will be when I splash and fire up the engine… to see if it made a noticeable difference. I’ll definitely report back on it 👍👍

Understand cost limits and just how large this project is, this idea may seem nonsensical. I would get new motor for the boat. Some people are finding that electric sailboat motors are the answer to a lot of issues. They pay for themselves over time because no more fuel cost or issues with bad gas. Check out a Electric Inboard. You may find a company willing to to refit your boat for free. No other sail boat of your size has yet done this. Great work. Great video.
@YachtHunters
@YachtHunters 3 месяца назад
that's definitely been on my mind. For now, I'm going to save my pennies and keep the old iron sails as happy as possible. It's a big undertaking but I love the idea. A hybrid setup with a generator would be neat - but would be neat to use regenerative or solar so I could ditch the diesel altogether. I did look into the cost for a 70-80hp electric motor and the total was up in the $40-50k USD range... I like the direction you're thinking!

I'm hoping the lights last 3-5 years... although they are rated for 50,000 hours of use. they are less than $1/linear foot so I'd be pleasantly surprised if they make it over 1,000 hours.... and if I'm in the engine room for more than 1,000 hours, lighting may not be my only problem. Thanks, Cals!!

Ah Randall, You steal my comments 3 minutes before the end, before I get to make them! So, Welcome to "Boat Yoga" class. If this is your first visit, please swing by your local WalMart and pick up a giant bottle of Ibuprofen before you get home... You're gonna need it! BTW, a sailor's watch cap worn while working in the engine bay, under the hull, or while in a locker will save your hair and the bill of that golf hat doesn't run into things. Sadly, I learned that trick too late to escape the "Samurai" hair line. 😪

Insanely tight budget my ass. Here’s a perfect example of a rich guy milking the blue collar system. Slick video, slick editing, slick Willy.
