I laughed when he emphasized 34F being a “cold” winter test. You probably wont see a big difference till you get 10F daytime temps with 10-20mph crosswinds. Also would be nice to see how much the battery depletes parked outside in 10-20F temps for at least 8 hours.

If only I had better control of the weather! Next time Virginia gets 10 degree temps I’ll make sure to go back out and test it again. 👍

@@EVResource I’d suggest doing a winter cross country road trip! Virginia to Washington and back. That would go a long way showing the capabilities of the car and the EV infrastructure.

Just amazing. More suspense than a movie!! I just shocked how calm you were!!

After running many EVs down to 0% you kinda just get used to it I guess. 🤷‍♂️

I did a 233 mile out and back road trip in Jan in my Model Y dual motor long range. 19 inch tires. Temp got down to 12F. A little head wind and cross wind outbound, but the wind died off on the way back, so no tail wind. Speed from 62 mph to 82 mph. At 302 Wh/mile, that implied a range of 248 miles. I couldn't be more pleased. Tesla has the best battery management systems.

My 2023 model y performance from 90% down to 15% gets 130 miles in the winter (45 degrees no snow). In the summer I was getting 170 from 90% to 15%. My wh/mi is 354.

Guys thank you for sharing this video!! 250 miles in cold temps is impressive, wondering how many miles you can really get during warmer temps.
@EVResource

Thanks! Honestly, I can’t go much longer than that. I think 3-3.5 hours is my max limit before I’d need to stop and pee. This was actually my last range test! I’ll be doing hwy efficiency testing, but range isn’t really important if you have an efficient vehicle that recharges quickly.

Thank you for sharing the video; you’re quite brave! I wouldn’t dare let my battery dip even close to 5%. 😄 It’s an eye-opening video. I’m curious, how would my 2023 Model Y Performance fare at 100% charge? Perhaps less than 200 miles?
@EVResource
@EVResource 5 месяцев назад
Honestly I wouldn’t expect the Performance Y to be much different if the conditions were the same. But I’d love to test it out!

Did u have ac or heat while driving this trip? Any phone charge etc?
@EVResource
@EVResource 5 месяцев назад
Yes, we set the climate to 70 degrees and the fan on its lowest setting. I don’t remember phone charging, but the amount of electricity that would use is negligible.

youre continuing to drive once you are at zero SOC as you have a reserve amount of kWh. So as an example a car with say 80kWh gross, would tend to have an upper and lower buffer of 2.5kWh each (so 5kWh) which leaves 75kWh usable, but 5kWh isnt showing within the GOM, so 0-100% is normally around 70kWh. 5kWH when you hit zero (reserve power) then the buffers of 5kWh giving a total of 80kWh

Once you get to know a specific EV, it would result in feeling more confident about that.

According to specs online, while the model y long range has an 82 kWh battery, only 75 kWh is usable.

We did, and normally I mention that at the start and didn't even realize until just now that I didn't say it this time! Yikes. Thanks for pointing that out!

20 degrees would be a better WINTER range test
@EVResource
@EVResource 11 месяцев назад
Absolutely! However, until I can control the weather here in VA, we’ll have to work with this. Perhaps you can suggest a way to get me and a vehicle to a place where it gets colder? I’d love to do that! Just need to be able to afford time away from the family, take off from my 9-5 job, and figure out some way to pay for transportation…

@@EVResource In January or February you can drive up to New England, maybe Massachusetts to go to Tree House Brewery, or to Vermont.

I’d love to be able to make something like that happen. Sounds like it could be a fun trip!

If it helps I did a less official drive from NH to Maine. It was 183 miles each way. I did between 70-75mph on a 2021 MYLR with 69k miles on the odometer. 18°F at the start and got up to about 25°F. It took 80% of the battery with two passengers and the cabin at 70°F. That puts a 100% usage at about 220 miles with those conditions. It was on relatively flat roads, I-95 and I-295. There was a slow down for tolls in NH and some up and down speeds with traffic, so real world conditions without a ton of consideration of keeping it scientific but more realistic. Edit: 20” wheels

Did you use the heater to keep warm in the car?

For all of my range tests, I set the A/C to 70 degrees and the fan speed at its lowest setting.
