I was taught when shooting one-handed to make a fist of the non-shooting hand, and hold it tight against my chest. Creates much more tension in your shoulders which translates into your firing hand for a better grip. It’s likely you are “limp wristing” the firearm and inducing the malfunctions when using your non-dominant hand. I notice your right hand/arm is just flopping against your side. Just a technique that works for me…
Its a technique you need to forget. Your shooting hand should be able to work independently of every other part of your body. Your other hand may be injured or fighting off an attacker.
I'll agree with @chaseme below. When PRACTICING ONE HAND and even the OFF HAND Shooting, Don't even worry about what your other hand is doing. I'll add, I don't even worry about my stance at times. I try to concentrate on NOTHING but my grip on the shooting hand and my breathing. Reason being, the biggest reason you practice one hand and off hand shooting is because you want these skills if you're injured. I might have taken a shot in the leg or hip and can't stand properly. I may have taken a shot to the shoulder or arm. So good for you for practicing your 1 handed shooting, but just concentrate on the grip and your breathing. Even do it laying down as if you're hit, down on a knee, laying on your back off the side etc. You get in a fire fight, you're going to want your breathing, grip and concentration on your target, and what if you have 2 or 3 targets shooting at you? It can happen. Some gang bangers jump out of a car and .... Lucky for us, most of them can't even hold a gun right, so our only advantage is our practice and muscle memory and putting our skills to work to even the odds. I'll agree with you on, she is likely limp wristing. Glocks are really finicky about limp wristing. A bit surprised though with a .380 for a very experienced shooter but I think you're probably right. She has the right idea, to shoot her husbands 42 and see if the problem follows her. I love my Glocks, but they're not for everyone.
@@hotrodpc66 I agree 100% that practising and training for "real world" scenarios is way better than static / flat-range shooting. However, in this case : - The video series is about comparison between different firearms and how Stav shoots them on a measurable and repeatable standardized course of fire. This means taking out variables... - What I saw in the first video (and seems to be resolved in the second) appears to be a breakdown in fundamentals (and this is purely my armchair quarterbacking opinion from a single video angle 😀). You can't turn the dial to 11 until the basics are mastered... Happy shooting !
Back in the day it was suggested by some that locking your weak side forearm over your chest while firing one handed would provide more protection for your heart & lungs area due to the bones in your forearm...
I got a SW Shield. I finally went to my first shooting range and shot for the first time. Got a practice more because the power the 9MM has is going to take some getting use to!@@thousandpixels
Both the 42 and 43 are really good guns, surprisingly easy to handle in spite of their small size. Plenty accurate and always reliable for self defense.
My wife just got her Glock 42 because you guys (and Paul Harrell) did well to convince us to try it at the range and it's a keeper. Thanks for the great content!
This is why i use little locks on my bag i carry in sometimes. When my grandkids are around...i want to be safe. It's not comfortable having a hard gun digging in when you carry your grands around...so prefer that when with them.
I like my G42 I got it last spring before I retired from Law enforcement. I put tru glow sights and a slip on houge grip. It fits my hand great and is spot on such a great shooting gun. I also got a sheild 9 and carry them from time to time. I carry IWB. Mag guts makes flat springs so your mags hold 1 extra rd.
I used to own a glock 42, I gave the pistol to my daughter. Now, it's her edc. She used to carry her Ruger LCP 380 until malfunction (extractor replacement). I carry my S&W M&P Shield Plus w/ an Apex trigger. I like a trigger with a wall when i fire. Used to carry my Glock 43 but all Glock's have a trigger like a staple gun, lol. Thanx for doing these videos and with the information.
I have had four Glock 42s and I currently still have three. They can be finicky with ammo if it is not loaded hot enough. The recoil spring is fairly heavy (at least in the ones I have) and requires hotter ammo to function perfectly. I have one 42 that would not feed a Freedom Munitions XTP load no matter how firmly I gripped it. A gunsmith polished the feed ramp for me. I can now hold that 42 with that ammo as lightly as I want with no malfunctions. I tested it shooting weak handed with an extremely light grip (just firm enough so that I would not drop it) and had no malfunctions with that same load. With my others, if I am shooting weaker ammo and not holding them extremely firm, I can get stove pipes like you were seeing. With hotter ammo, they are less grip sensitive. Carrying hotter ammo may resolve the issue with stove pipes when shooting weak handed. I carry a load that is warm enough that it is not grip sensitive. I am a big believer in only carrying a pistol/ammo combination that is not grip sensitive as you may need it when injured/sick etc, and you are not capable of gripping it firmly. I enjoyed your video and looking forward to the rest of this series. Are you considering any of the Shadow Systems pistols? I have a CR920 & two MR920s and find them to be very easy to be accurate with. The CR920 is soft shooting for a small 9mm and may be small enough to still work comfortably in your hands.
FYI - Pearce has a nice +1 magazine for the Glock 42. Adding that tiny extension is very nice. I don't like adding size to an EDC, but this had so much benefit I found it worth the small size penalty.
The G42 has been my CC for a few years now. I love it I also have the sticky holster that I use quite often. I switch between the sticky holster and my flashbangs. Depends on my outfit.
Great idea. I recently changed my carry gun (Sig P239 9mm) after 25 years. I'm older now, and the front sight is hard for my aging eyes to focus on any more. I decided to get a red dot equipped pistol. I narrowed it down to either the Sig P365X, or the Glock 43X MOS. I wanted the X size, because I want a full grip. I dislike stubby grips or grips that consist partially of the magazine extension. My neighborhood gun shop didn't have the Sig in stock, so I got the Glock and equipped it with a Sig Romeo Zero Elite. I love it, but it does take some transition training! I look forward to your experiments.
@@joes973 I have a pair actually so I can dual wield. Normally I might be less silly with my money but Washington state was enacting a magazine ban so I really had no choice.
@@dillonc7955 for carry I generally stick to the factory 6 round mag with the pinky finger extender and carry a spare 2 12 round mags from ETS. I figure if I have to change mags that prolly means I need the extended variety. But to be concealed they’re too long. The thirty round drum would “print” quite a lot so for general carry use it’s not practical. I make my own holsters so carrying suppressed is an option but it takes forever to clear the holster with the added length.
a suggestion as an add on two round extender it gives your pinky finger somewhere to be and a crimson trace green laser it takes it to a whole new level and it still fits in the sticky perfectly
I appreciate your demo on the sticky holster. I have spent a fortune trying to find something comfortable. I was a little nervous using something without a Kydex shell but after watching you guys, I decided to give it a try. Definitely very comfortable and has been holding strong!
I love how you balance the practical day to day (how you carry in different outfits and situations) with the practical shooting (showing us drills we can do etc). This channel is just *chef's kiss* perfection.
Thank you for making these videos. I just bought my first 9mm and we go the range 2x a week and you have helped me so much besides my trainer. Stay awesome and I look fwd to many more of your videos
What a great idea! Can't wait to see your thoughts on different guns. I am carrying a Shield plus now but I have a cross body bag that I converted like you did and the Shield is just a tad too big for a comfortable draw. I am more comfortable carrying on-body and looking for better holsters. I have belly bands, but find when I sit or bend over my "rolls" tend to push the bigger gun up and out (use them mostly with an LCP). I also have an EZ .380 but the barrel is too long to conceal (but great to shoot). Thank you!
This is a great series. Really looking forward to hearing more in the future. I tell my students to check out your channel when they've gone through my classes.
Thank you Stav! Love your vids and also started carrying the Glock 42. I would like to see your thoughts on the 43x MOS, and also how well you shoot with a red dot.
In several different Facebook groups, I read a ton of women carry the LCP 1, 2, and Max because of its size. My LCP 2 always seemed to jam/misfire at the range. I don’t trust it for carry. It might be the operator. 🤣. That’s why I think it’d be a great one to consider highlighting whether good or bad. Thanks for all you do!
I NEVER thought of re-holstering in that manner! Great, and now I can re-holster that-a-way with my pocket holsters. (2 442s). That is called a "New York Reload.
Great review/video of the Glock 42. It has been my EDC for over 2 years, now. Previously, I carried the Taurus Spectrum. I have other guns, the Glock 19, 43X and 44, but those aren't practical for me, as an EDC, as I'm small stature too. I pocket carry, with a sticky holster, and love that combination. I installed the MagGuts spring/follower in my Glock 42 magazine, giving it 7 rounds in the same space, yielding 7 +1. I highly recommend MagGuts. For my spare mag, I use Strike Industries EMP +2, which gives 8 rounds. Other than the mags, my 42 is factory standard. The key to 380 for professional defense is the right ammo, which, for me, is either Fiocchi Extrema XPT or Hornady XPT; actually any XPT round works great. As to the "perfect carry gun," I don't believe any gun is perfect for everyone. The key is what is perfect for you. For me, it is the Glock 42.
Yes! You are correct about notifications. I'm telling everyone to whom I recommend the channel to do notifications. So, I will say it. Google is messing with anything relating to firearms. It includes maps to gun stores.
You may want to use a hand grip exerciser for your left hand. Without intentionally exercising, the non dominant hand tends to be the weaker as it is the least used of the two hands.
I’ve had numerous carry guns and by far I shoot the S&W m&p shield plus the best. However due to my age and bad back I pocket carry the Ruger LCP max the most. Love sticky holsters too
I bought a G42 and a LCP Max at the same time for summer carry options. The G42 has been ammo sensitive while the LCP Max has had zero malfunctions. Just my personal experience.
While I have numerous carry options, my primary is usually my P365 with the 12 round mag + 1 in the pipe. It has never had a hiccup. Being striker fired, the trigger is a little mushy: but, it’s a smooth shooter. I carry with an OWB Vedder Kydex rig. If I need to go even smaller, it’s my P938 with a 7 round mag. It’s a little snappy and a biit fussy with certain 9mm loads; but, it has a very crisp hammer-fired SAO trigger, similar to a 1911; but without the grip safety.
The JM4 Tactical holsters with magnetic retention also requires to remove the holster to reholster, then replace it IWB/OWB as you wear it. Since there is never any hurry to GO BACK to the holster, this should not be an issue.
Nice video. I've had a Glock 42 for four years now. As nice a gun as it is, especially for carry, it can be sensitive to maintaining a proper grip (commonly called limp wristing). No problem of course when at the range in a controlled environment, where you have may have the luxury of taking your time to achieve a proper hold on the firearm. I don't seem to be alone in this observation of the 42. Too loose a hold, as perhaps you might have in a crisis situation, and the gun may not cycle properly. No issues like this with my Beretta .380.
I carry a standard Sig P365. I love it, have never had any issues in any area as far as carrying, shooting or anything. Would be interesting to see you do a video using one of those. Side note, I also use a Sticky holster with it. It's the only holster I'll use. It works perfectly.
Hi, Blessings! 🙏 Could you and your husband do a video walk through on gun cleaning & overall maintenance if possible! I think that would be an interesting and helpful and valuable video.
Good vid! Thank you for the lessons. My guess the malfunctions are a result of grip of the non-dominant hand combined with the ammunition. .380 seems to have a fairly large range of "power" from brand to brand so it would be interesting to buy a new box of something rated well or hand loaded to a higher (safe) pressure and try that with the non-dominant hand with the same weapon. I found years ago that I shot better with non-dominant hand when firing one hand magnum rounds.. Probably more of a timing thing as both my grips are fairly strong. Keep shooting and say hi to your other half...😁
Thank you! I am looking forward to the next pistols in the series! And thank you for showing how to carry in multiple outfits! You are highly appreciated!
I really enjoy your channel as there are many women in my world who shoot, and I have taken many women to the range for their first shooting experience. Your discussions regarding weapons and gear from a woman's perspective is truly excellent. I have shared your channel with many of my female friends. Don't forget to include the Ruger LCP Max as a consideration in your weekly carry review considerations
I'm glad you're trying this I've mentioned this a couple times that I carry different guns every day of the week. I've been doing that for many years now because what's the point of having multiple guns if you never use them. If you want I'll tell you what I carry
Love the channel and Mac’s brilliant idea for this new series. Glock 43X my EDC. You and Mac did a comparison video a while back. Y’all liked it. Am sure it will be incorporated in this series. Looking forward to your thoughts. I think it’s a perfect all around firearm for concealed carry, home defense and the range. Love the new channel as well!!
I like the premise of choosing different carry firearms. I think in addition to the firearm portion it would be beneficial to using different holsters. I believe you'd agree that not every holster will work great with every gun? I also like the collaboration with Mac. I would really appreciate a review of the Canik line, the Mete for sure. I'd really enjoy it from both the opinion of Mac and yourself on the Canik firearms. Also, I keep seeing ads on the Tube here for the VNSH holster, though in reality it's another belly band system. I'd be curious to have you review that holster system.
Thanks for a great video. The sticky holder is fine for micro compacts and some compacts. Please include the specifics of the ammo used for training and defense. I use a hand exerciser to maintain grip strength and it has helped with shooting one handed.
I carry the Glock 42 a lot. Added Novak big dot night sights, rubber Talon grips, Pearce +1 mag plate, MAGGUTS +1 magazine spring (8+1). I have a Hunter belt holster and an Alabama holster Kydex pocket holster. P.S. Carrying off body (in a bag) = bad idea.
Love your channel. My daughter had a recent incident at the townhouse she lives at where a female resident was assaulted by some teenage thugs when she surprised them while they were breaking into some cars . She suffered serious injuries that required surgery . Now my daughter wants to arm herself and get trained . I have a Glock 42 and Sig P365 Rose .380 for her to try and one pistol I am interested in for her I’d like to get your thoughts on is the Smith & Wesson Equalizer 9mm. Thank you.
Yikes - Hope your daughters friend makes a full recovery! Women packing is the great equalizer for them especially when trained and know how to use it! Stay Frosty, Stay Strapped, and Stay Dangerous!
I've seen that same problem with a Glock 42 before, mainly with older people with weaker hands. I agree with Mac, grip a little better. I don't recommend the Glock 42 because I've seen too many problems. My usual carry guns are the Glock 26 if in a belt holster or a Springfield Hellcat if in a pocket holster. Both extremely reliable & comfortable size for me. I suggest you try a Hellcat since it's closer to the Glock 42 than people realize. My Shield Plus wound up in the safe after doing classes with the Hellcat & Shield. Both guns totally reliable in either hand but the Hellcat more comfortable later in the class & with slightly better accuracy.
@bobmacquarrie sounds good. Some like the Shield better & some like the Hellcat better. It's nice to have choices. Having fully disassembled both I'll rate the Hellcat more durable & it performs as well as any of my Glocks. Thanks
Great idea from Mac - Still Carry S&W shield 1.0 myself! Been debating on buying between a Sig Sauer P365 AXG Legion or Canik TP9 Elite SC with an optic on one of them for a newer!
I got the dumbest carry setup in the world. I'm a skinny guy but when I carry its an HK Mark 23 in a shoulder rig. Can only use hoodies/coat with that, but the rig has a tilting holster on it so it sits vertically along the torso unless I need to draw. I just love the damn gun.
Beast of weapon the mk23. I hope you practice both dry and live fire drawing from a shoulder holster. Btw who makes a shoulder rig for that tank of a pistol?
Craft Holsters. The model is the Vertical Roto Shoulder Holster, mine is in black. They have R/H and L/H models and Id assume they make em for tons of firearms based on having the Mk23 available. @@jason_m_schmidt622
There is always a dilemma for a ccw for seniors, women, weak hands, size for concealment. Evaluations on u tube indicate 32 caliber H & R mag is a good compromise of penetration and recoil. Also the Baretta Tomcat30X seems to solve the rack problem. Please test this new model.
I also have this gun, I think it is great, but sometimes the recoil seems more than my Glock 30sf, probably because of it weight. Thanks for all you do, you have an excellent channel
Very little recoil on the G42 from my former carry, the GX4. Night and day if you ask me. I also tried out once the LCP 2. G42 much better feeling and shooting gun.
I like the series idea. As a thought, maybe add in a drill like the ASP 10 rd Skill check so there is a test with a time based element along with the untimed accuracy test. Keep up the great work.
I love the Glock 42. I started out with the LCP Max and that thing is awful, which is a crying shame. It's night and day between the LCP and the Glock. I carry the G42 on short errand runs but will typically carry a larger 9mm if I go somewhere outside of my comfort radius. I can make consecutive hits at 80 yards all day long with the Glock 42. I run hard cast flat nose rounds in it to ensure good penetration.
Another wonderful video you did some amazing shooting. I agree with you the jams that you did have looked like a mag problem to me. I’ve gotten those same jams, even on my strong hand. When I change the mags out it shot better.
Of all the Glocks I've shot the only one that I had a problem with was my Glock 42, and that was a couple of failures to feed. Never did figure out why ? I shot the gun with my dominant hand, I've all ways wondered and had doubts of carrying. I need to shoot it more and try to figure it out ? Good video.
Most 380s are more ammo picky than major calibers due to power factor. G42 is among the more reliable ones but they don't like light loads or being dry/dirty. Most JHP ammo is hotter than most range loads but need to be tested. My 42 didn't like S&B or Browning range ammo when new. It now runs everything I feed it but I check the fps velocity and don't buy the weak stuff.
More women should carry guns and maybe your sites will accomplish that goal. I carry a Ruger LCR 38 in my right pocket and the G42 in my left side waistband w/a Kydex holster. The combo works perfect for standing or sitting, and with ammo in the trunk I can stop off at any gun range, buy a few targets and have fun. The combo of the LCR and G42 has changed my life.
I would love to see you try the Beretta APX A1. That’s what I shoot, but don’t carry. All the reviews I have come across about it, it is alway a strong man doing the review. I would like to carry this gun but don’t know if it’s practical for me. We are close in build, so a review would be helpful! Love your channel.
Great video! You convinced me to buy a Sticky Holster for my new P365-380 (haven't even shot it yet). Idea for video: Kel-Tec p32 pocket carry. I'm an old guy (70) and the p32 is what I've been carrying. Trying to convince my wife to carry this now that I got the SIG (she's gun shy would never carry even a 380). Also, I'm always looking for a good sourdough recipe. Can you post the one you showed your sister?
Ever tried any of the Canik firearms? Some of the best "Out of the Box" triggers on the market (in my opinion) --- I have a TP9 a couple of the TP9 Elite SC and like shooting them more than my Shield Plus -- a bit heavier but not near a "flippy" as the Shield Plus. 🙂 Keep up the fantastic content!
Would love your review on the Ruger LCP II .22. This is my maternity EDC because it’s so small and easily fits into my maternity pants with my belly lol. I know a .22 isn’t an ideal caliber but it’s better to carry the gun you’ll actually bring than nothing at all, IMO
