I created a step-by-step guide on how I find compositions in the woods. I'm joined by Master Photographer Mike Browne at Wistman's Wood.
A couple of weeks ago I travelled to Dartmoor to photograph the incredible Wistman's Wood and to meet up with my very good friend, Mike Browne.

Mike joined me on this vlog to create a behind-the-scenes video for his channel. I obviously used this time for a laugh and catch-up. It turns out Mike has been pretty busy since Covid.
The most obvious stand-out achievement is making various videos in support of the Ukrainian struggle during this awful time. Mike travelled to the border to supply some of the families fleeing the war. I can't put into words how much of an incredible job he and other volunteers did and are continuing to do to this day.
This video is very moving... • We Met Amazing People ...
A huge thank you to Mike for offering his precious time to join me on one of my rambles.

Hi again Gary. At the end of Covid signs were erected asking visitors not to go into the wood, in order to protect the environment. I visited early this year and they were still there. Have they now been removed because if so I will go again. I also love all the little mosses which grow on the wall as you start the walk from the car park, great for macro on the way back to the car,

Thank you Gary for reigniting the fire which was started some years ago by watching a certain Mr Browne. I got sucked into the mobile phone trap in recent years and my proper camera has just become an expensive paperweight! I am now in full on binge mode watching your back catalogue and can’t wait to blow the cobwebs off all my gear😀👍📸

Back in the 1990s-2000s I did wedding and portrait photography for about 20 years. I got burned out on the whole thing, photography was no longer enjoyable and I took about a fifteen year break. I've just recently re-discovered my love for photography. I've been subscribed to Gareth's channel for a couple of months, subscribed to yours last night, now I'm going on to Mike's channel and subscribe. Thanks for helping this old guy on a new journey. I appreciate you all and your willingness to share with others.

Wistman’s Wood is a very special place - one of only three highland oak woodlands left in Dartmoor and probably once part of an extensive woodland that covered much of Dartmoor before most of it was cleared around 5,000 BCE. I have not been there since I was a child but have long wanted to return with my camera. As a child we used to go to various parts of Dartmoor during summer holidays, but it was the tors and the open spaces we tended to get taken to most of the time. I liked your favourite best of all too. I have seen some incredible images from there. Sometimes I have seen photographs with a much lower colour temperature in Wistman’s Wood, almost to the point of being over done and there being a blue colour cast in them, but they work surprisingly well. A bit of fog in there makes these truly ancient woodlands take on a whole new dimension. If it wasn’t Dartmoor, it was various parts of the South Hams coast we got taken too regularly. Did you also make it to that coast?

I agree wholeheartedly you describing Mike as a fantastic photographer and vlogger, but so are you. I learned, and still learn, so much from you guys and it always is a pleasure to watch your videos. Now, as far as great photographers and vloggers go, you mustn't forget Thomas Heaton, which, I believe, you don't. I reckon, it would make for a great video to watch another two of England's finest having a chat over photography.

It’s so good to see you guys together sharing your skills with us to learn and improve with. I’ve been following Mike over the past 4-years. I came across your channel just over a year now not realizing you knew Mike. I couldn’t ask for two better photographers to follow and learn from. Thanks for doing all you do to help us in improving.

I thought Gary’s visiting Dartmoor so being a local I had to watch the blog. I smiled as soon as the first clip started. Wind and rain, yep that’s Dartmoor. It’s so interesting to see your choice of shot of the twisted old oaks. It seemed you were keeping to the outside of the copse especially choosing the long lens. It’s been on the news that Wistmans is out of bounds to the public now because of the damaged caused with people taking the moss off the boulders. It’s not patrolled and there’s no fence so I’m really not sure. It looked like you had great fun with Mike. I’ll check out his channel. Thanks for the links. Look forward to more of your adventures.

You and Mike need to team up regularly because you have such a wonderful chemistry between you. I watched Mike's video and now yours and it was pure fun to see two professional photographers laughing it up and and freely engaging in humorous back and forth horseplay with no thought as to how it might taint your reputations as serious photographers. I was laughing out loud while watching both videos. I was following Mike when I came across your original interview and that's how I ended up following you. I am particularly interested in your woodland photography as I am a short drive from the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois, USA. I am keenly following your perspectives on woodland compositions. Thank you both for such outstanding videos. God bless!

Nice video but I feel I must make a comment about the extremely delicate environment of Wistman's Wood. Dartmoor National Park Authority have requested that people stick to the outside of the wood as there are some very, very rare lichens and plants, not to mention the whole environment, that are in danger of being lost due to people clambering inside the actual wood. I did make a comment on Mike's video but for some reason it wasn't posted (I tried a few times). The National Park Authority have even said that if the damage continues it will have no choice but to fence off the wood, which would be a great shame. It would be fantastic if you'd do some kind of follow up video informing your followers of this fact and hopefully this will go some way to helping people understand the delicate nature of that wonderful woodland (all details can be found on the NPA website, along with their requests for people to remain outside of the actual wood itself). As I say, I tried to make a comment ( a few times) on Mike's video but it wasn't published - not sure why as he doesn't strike me as someone with no care for the environment. Thanks Gary and keep up the good work

Loved the pregnant pause and then the crack up at the beginning. Now for a photography question. How do you edit green?? I really struggle with the colour green in my photos. It always seems so over saturated when it did actually look that way?? Woodland photography is challenging for sure. Thanks for a great video :)

Good to see you in the WestCountry again. It always rains and is always windy on Dartmoor when I visit. Can I recommend Bedruthan Steps in North Cornwall and Godrevy lighthouse and (honeypot location) Wheal Coates? They are good sunset locations. There is also St Michael's Mount (although a bit further west) this one is a sunrise location. All really good places for photography.

Im glad to hear other opinions of Insta are the same as mine. I was there in the beginning, and its nothing but an influencer riddled, ad dominated mess. Left it last year and felt great doing so. It seemed the photos that get all the attention and rave reviews were overblown, overfiltered, photoshopped abominations. Nothing looked real. I will check into ClickASnap.....
