@William Michaels if the artist wanted a yellowed painting, they would have tinted it as such. The varnish is just to protect the painting, and once yellowed removes what the artist intended.

I do custom framing and there are people who insist on having old style glare resistant glass which is almost like a lightly frosted glass which obviously obscures details. Even when they see the new style glare resistant glass which is even more clear than typical glass they’re like nahhh. Why?? Don’t you want to see your art??

... they can't be like the original ones, they aren't going to look like before just for a simple reason. The paint ,as the barnish, is old. The end.

They're probably placing value on the age of an object, and want people to know how old their artwork or antiques are.

The risk for damage is very high and not many people want to restore it. (Or so I have heard)

Da Vinci used very unusual and experimental paints and painting techniques, some of which made his work more fragile than other paintings. It is impossible (currently) to clean/restore his work without damaging it.

The Mona Lisa cannot currently be restored. Da Vinci’s technique for painting her makes it physically impossible to strip the varnish without removing the top layers of paint themselves. It is believed that he adjusted her so many times that there are hundreds of layers of varnish and paint on the canvas.

Da Vinci didn't used the same techniques as the other did, he directly painted the pigments in dry canvas which is if the mona lisa is restored, the moments the solvent was swabbed, the paint will mix in and their will be nothing left except a old canvas.

Right! I am so glad he takes the old varnish off, I feel like he is honoring the artist so much by exposing what he/she wanted the painting to be. It's just incredible. He takes such care I really like this guy.

@@armymelodyloe1308 It makes me sad that we can't clean the Mona Lisa. da Vinci's painting style makes it so even cleaning it would take off the paint layers. I'm so disappointed since he was was so talented, yet we can hardly see it anymore.

@@tristonanan eh, i mean one of Leonardo's boyfriends did a copy of the mona lisa so we know what she would look like if we could clean up that filth. its basically like we have two of them. i dont think that particular painting being unrestorable is that big of a tragedy tbh.

He used so much oil in the white foundation layer that the paintings are certain to yellow through and through. The paintings were not the point anyway. The point was to teach people an easy way to have fun messing around with paint. That and to sell art supplies.

I hope conservationists check out Bob Ross's paintings someday soon. They are not being conserved at all just boxed away in a garage. Would be sad if his paintings just rod away in there. The paintings and Bob made me so happy as a child.

This. I don't varnish my paintings because I haven't found one that doesn't oversaturate the living hell out of my work. I work in bright colors picked at the time and mixed down to a given smoothness and softness because they worked. But when varnished they go into a state of nasty. It feels plastic instead of soft and touchable. Like people who see my stuff reach out to touch it. I want them to keep doing that. So if some asshole varnished my pieces...and then let them get dirty as shit, I'm going to haunt their stupid ass for wreaking my painting and praising the dirt on it like dirt has more value than the work I put in. I'll never understand a collector who thinks the dirt has more value than the art.

You wouldn’t care cause you’d be long dead, the people who owns the painting is the person who gets to decide how it should be treated.

It depends how you want to look at a piece of art, is it the piece of art itself and the age of it is just a part of it? or do we want to keep the artists intention? there's no right answer i think, but i love watching him clean it :b

Isn't it the purpose of varnish to protect the painting from aging and dirt to make it last for hundreds of years?

JewelCat Demon Princesses Mood! I am loving oil painting now that I’ve started and I would be distraught if no one cared to maintain the portraits and pieces of which I pour my heart and soul. I’d add a small note on the back of the canvas giving information about your varnish so people will know if they ever want to restore your work :)

I can't imagine if someone varnished my unvarnished pieces (they're supposed to soft and almost touchable FFS) and then after the varnish yellowed and got all ugly went 'its supposed to be gnarly like that'. Like no. Varnish puts a barrier between the viewer and your paint. You varnish my shit over my dead body. Now admittedly...they're going to get dirty and so forth, but cleaning wise I'd want them to remain soft and absorbing, not shiny and oversaturated.

There was an awful lot of controversy about the Sistine Chapel cleaning, with some people complaining that they were 'removing the patina'. The big shock was discovering that Michaelangelo used such cartoon like colours : watermelon pink, lime green etc.

I'd like to see that too. I have a friend who's interested in becoming a restorer.

Maria Heart yeah that much is obvious. It's just that I live in a different country so it would've been interesting for me to see how the process differs in the US. Because back here in Germany, you gotta have at least a year of practical experience in such a subject to even get accepted into university.

Just a word of warning if a non professional want to try it on a less valuable painting, sometimes parts of the shading is done with the same materials as the varnish and not with oilpaint as the rest of the picture so one need to be careful to not remove those layers if it's the case.
