Finesse Jigging MONDO seabass and Porgy with the jig worm

Fished a short afternoon window in the middle sound (NY side) looking for fluke mainly but knowing that seabass and porgy were likely going to be the by-catch. The wind just tends to pick the seas up more out here where the Long Island Sound stretches about 17mi wide from NY to CT. I didn't make it to the further ledge I initially wanted to try but the scattered boulders provided plenty of action with trophy-sized seabass and porgy in the mix.

Thanks for the videos, they really help as I kayak fish off the north shore, though with only a paddle kayak and no fish finder, these give me a good idea of how to fish better.

Peter, Great clip. I've told you before.... I carry stink juice. But I rarely use it. I never use gulp. I'm glad you torched'em on a scent free bait. I don't know why I care. But I do.... Weird, huh?

this trip really confirmed my suspicions that the stink juice doesn't matter all that much. Maybe if the fish are not super hungry and the tide is off it could help coerce a bite but honestly if you have the proper action on the bait and present it properly through the current at the right tide, the right fish will react and strike. the next video I post will further confirm this

Thanks man! I agree, but I think most are aware of us, it’s tougher for them when we,re in the channels and near bridges I think but out in the open like this there’s no reason to be so close. Hope you get on some the season!

It’s not the exact brand of senko but yes it is a stick bait or bass worm. Senkos have a faster sink rate than most worms so theyr meant to be fished weightless. When you fish this on a jig head the sink rate doesn’t matter so I went with just a cheap bass worm so I get more bang for my buck!

Hey Gio, thanks! There was a clearance at basspro.com they are called still-o-worms. For freshwater but I don’t think it matters. Honestly I think any old freshwater bass worm would work

Sea bass opens this Sunday. I haven't seen many scup the last couple years I've gone out. I used to catch over a dozen each time.

Hey Peter. Love your content! I have that same compass. Incredibly stable little kayak. Just got the same trolling motor you have. I mainly fish out of Jamaica bay but sometimes venture out to Long Island. Have always wanted to target Sea bass but always feared that you have to go too far out to catch them. I fish alone and it’s dangerous to be too far offshore solo. Any tips on how to target them closer to shore? I have a fish finder, what type of structure should I look for. Keep up the great videos. Learning a lot from you!

Thanks for the kind words Felix and that’s great we have the same kayak. It is a great stable platform I love mine. I mainly look for boulders on the charts, all the points that have marked boulders usually have unmarked boulders as well in the nearby area. You do have to be deep in the western sound I think to find decent sized seabass and even then it’s tough as there’s just so much pressure but I’ve seen them as shallow as 35’ and of course as deep as 90’ or more. Just try to find a big boulder in that depth and work it with the current

Awesome footage ! Was I seeing things or did a couple of those worms you had have multiple splits in the tail like squid tentacles. If so do they come like that or did you slice those up yourself? As for the charter boats in that area (well, everywhere ) , I’ve had that happen to me multiple times and sadly they will mug and wake you just Porgies🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks man, and good eye. I did cut the tail with a scissor to sort of make tentacles on the back half of the worm. I think it helps give a little more action....yeah the party boat thing is a bit of a downer but I guess that's the reality of the situation, they are working these areas daily and are much bigger than us lol - porgies are their bread and butter though, so I do understand it to an extent

Go for it! There was a clearance at basspro.com they are called still-o-worms. For freshwater but I don’t think it matters. Honestly I think any old freshwater bass worm would work. I have a link in the description for the one I used but seriously try your old freshwater plastics

Great video. Do they make a stick-o-worm for freshwater and a different one for saltwater or can they be used in either salt or fresh.

I don’t think it matters but typically the freshwater ones they infuse with salt so I’d imagine you can use them in both. But yeah I think the stik o worm is a freshwater bass lure

to be honest I havent even really tried the other colors I have since this one has been working so well but I don't think it would matter too much, as long as they can see it I think you'll be fine
