Matt is teaching while catching giant bass! Don't miss this! He's throwing small paddle tail swimbaits and getting monster bites when he gets inspired and stops what he's doing to explain how subtle differences between popular swimbaits and swimbait hooks can make huge differences in your catch rates.
There are a variety of finesse swimbaits on the market and many of them catch fish. So why do certain models always seem to shine? Are there times when you should cut one off and try a different style? How will switching from a bare head to a bladed head impact the bait? There is so much to understand about these small swimbaits that is often overlooked and as you'll see in today's video, it can have a huge impact on the size of fish you're catching!
Below you'll find links to the exact baits Matt was using, the exact heads, weights, and colors he discussed, as well as the specific rod models he was fishing with. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

For about the last 3 weeks, I've been researching swimbaits. I've watched several "pro" videos and I've watched several of yours. Nobody goes as in‐depth as you guys do. Everybody else just talks about their 1 favorite swimbait, jig head setup. I am waiting on a TW order now containing all the baits and heads you guys teach. I honestly can't wait to get this stuff out on the water. Thank you, I love your channel. When I am curious about a technique, you guys are the 1st place I look.

It always cracks me up when he talks so much about certain models of reels and rods. THIS IS THE Rod- G Loomis NRX+ 901S SJR PLUS and it really catches the fish better than anything else! Put a blindfold on and I guarantee you wont tell the difference between reels or rods if they are similar size. As long as its not walmart stuff, its fine.

I picked up an Okashira screw head and 3” sparkshad and I’m catching ALOT of fish on it, different species too like yellow perch, small mouth, largemouth. I have a concern though wondering if I’m doing something wrong. I have tongue hooked two largemouth with this jig head whereas I’ve never tongue hooked a fish before this. One of the largemouth didn’t make it as there was tons of blood even though I did my best to unhook her in the water to stop the bleeding. Am I doing something wrong with my hook set possibly or is this just something that happens sometimes? I’ve caught hundreds of bass and thought it was odd this happened twice with this setup.

@jamesh7469
@jamesh7469 2 года назад
Victory 7’3MH has an excellent action and power for any of the 3 and 4” sleeper sizes up to 3/4oz. 7’1 and 7’5 lengths are really similar as well so whatever length you like just go with that. Legend tournament bass is my favorite but the victory series blanks feel identical in taper. Shimano Zodias 72MH, and Daiwa rebellion 73MH have a bit faster tips that would be great if you want max sensitivity on straight fluorocarbon, and Expride 72MH or Levante Diablo Spec R or EMTF would be even better for a little bit higher price. 30lb braid to 12-17lb leader, or straight 12-17lb fluoro. You can go down to 10lb but you’ll start experiencing a lot of break offs on the hookset, which happened to me a lot fishing where Matt and Tim are now until I went back up to 12lb leader For reels, Curado 150MGL, Curado 70MGL, Tatula 100SV, or Tatula 80 depending on your brand preference. Shimanos cast a tiny bit further and feel smoother out of the box due to the tiny “micro module” gear teeth, but the centrifugal brakes are more fussy and prone to backlash and the gears tend to degrade faster due to the smaller teeth. Daiwas are stupid simple to dial in and cast and have maintained the out of the box feeling for longer, but you don’t get the super butttery smooth feeling until you reach the $350 price point with the zillions and steezs. Victory 73MH with a Tatula 100SV 8:1, 30lb braid and 15lb leader would be my go to setup, you can use 7:1 reels if you are swimming it more and fishing the sleeper less like a jig. As long as you’re using 15lb leader/line or higher this will be an excellent combo for a ton of stuff 3/4oz and below including swim jigs, finesse jigs, spinnerbaits, buzz baits, weightless or weighted texas rigs, flukes, etc

The one thing I pick up from watching this video is how slow you're turning the handle on the reel. I tend to just be a steady real guy at a steady speed, but watching you very the retrieve speed and how slow you're bringing it back to the boat is something I'm going to try the next time I hit the water. With respect to finish swimbaits, do you really think line size matters with respect to the number of bytes that you get?

I've been using the Reaction innovations Skinny dipper and love the bait on a 5/0 Keel hook doing some damage in south Texas

It’s so weird with the smallies where I’m at. They don’t eat light line finesse baits, but a Alabama rig on 65lb braid catches 5 pounders all the time.

Just wondering; you cast with your right and crank with your left with spinning gear, and yet you use your right for both casting and cranking when using bait casting gear. It doesn't make sense!

I know you guys stress the importance of trailers on a swim jug. Could you guys show us what different trailers to swim jigs under water?

I think this is the first time I have seen you weigh a fish. In fact, in the past I have commented on your not weighing fish. Looks like it takes a lot to get you excited.

Ha! We've been blessed to catch quite a few very big fish so the weights arent critical to us. The numbers have to be pretty high before we make sure we're spot on. However, If the smallie looks over 5 or the largie looks like it could be approaching double digits... we hang every one of them because a 9.98 isn't a 10 😛

I’ve had trouble with the Okashira heads getting the blade to spin. Used them with the Keitech Easy Shiners. Am I missing something? Did I get a defective pack?
@kevinyangfishing4585
@kevinyangfishing4585 2 года назад
You might’ve pushed the plastic too far up where the blade spins. I’ve had the same problem too when I first started using okashira heads. Make sure there’s enough gap so the blade functions correctly. Hopefully this helps!

Don’t wanna push the bait all the way up, have a little room between the blades and swimbait.
@realjeffgarrett

@@kevinyangfishing4585 Do ya’ll fish it fast or slow? It seemed like if I fished it fast the blades would spin, but if I tried to slow roll it they wouldn’t 🤷🏻‍♂️
