Good stuff as always. Question for you: I have a paver walkway and patio coming up. My only options for bedding layer are: 1/4 minus (stone sand), washed sand, or pea gravel. Which out of the 3 would you pick if you had to? Freeze/thaw cycles aren’t really an issue where I’m at. I plan on using 3/4 clean (3/4 chip) for base Thanks in advance

I wish we had a chip stone here for the paver bedding. We end up having to use quarter minus material while everyone else still uses sand around here.

Your consistency is amazing! Since watching I've started my own hardscape business and been dabbling with the GoPro for a few months now and its great to be able to learn from you in both aspects of this trade. Now I do have a question though, would the bubble touching the line on that type of level be a 1/4" (2%) slope/pitch rather than 1/8th? Those levels with multiple lines definitely provide a 1/8th on the first line but I want to hear your thoughts/experience, especially since you'd know your exact rise/run on your jobs. Thanks man! :)

I've been watching your videos for 2 months straight now love your work, im looking to expand my company. I'm in NY and have a lawn mowing business looking to move into hardscaping and doing patios. what do you use and or what's your process on sealing/ staining the walkways/ patios you do?! I want to do everything on my own property first for my first time but don't wann dump thousands and have it turn out looking like crap

If you were to lay pavers over a large concrete slab would you use mortar, 1/4 crushed stone fine or sand at the base above concrete?

I'm looking for some advice on how I can tie a small rock wall into a patio in my personal yard, also a question on a retaining wall setup. Driving my self a little crazy trying to figure it out any help would be appreciated.

Is there anyway I can contact you? I want to start doing driveways too. I'm doing a lot of fire pits, walkways and patios with the information you're giving me and it's been wonderful. I'm just wondering if the process is different with a driveway? Rich

There tends to be alot of problems that can arise from putting pavers right to the foundation. For one the poly sand gets beat up year over year from ground movement. Water issues are another concern as concrete is porous and there is a chance water weeping through the foundation into the basement. Because of the water issues, basement walls tend to end up with efflorescence on the inside of the wall when moisture is trapped and has no where to go but inside the house. Water moves to fill voids, which a basement is just that, a giant void. And lastly that foundation wall is sitting on a footer about 4 feet down. The footer extends out past the foundation wall a half foot or so. When winter comes around the ground rises due to freezing causing expansion, the foundation and footer do not rise as they are below frost level. Spring time comes and ground settles back down. Year over year this causes settling. All while mashing up the poly sand between the pavers and moving said pavers around. Foundation walls are rarely straight as well so it’s never a bad idea to stay off the foundation a bit when laying pavers. I have done patios and walkways both ways in the past but what is shown in the video is the best way to not have to deal with a potential problem down the road. Aesthetically it doesn’t matter much. Your eyes are not drawn to the foundation wall when the patio is complete and tables and chairs are out there, so not a bad idea to play it safe. Also allows for a slight buffer in the future if any new electrical or irrigation, anything of that sort needs to be ran. They don’t have to tear up a section of brand new patio. Just my two cents from a decade of doing this kinda work in the same geographical area as the video.
