A rebuilt horse drawn buggy pole is completed, for a surrey, doctor's buggy, or spring wagon. These poles are used for hitching two animals to a light wagon or buggy. These types of restoration projects are still very common in the wagon trade.

Did not want to leave just a negative comment. In my youth 70 years ago, Mr. Ebert down the street build toys and clocks in his workshop out behind his house and I spent many a day with him and watched. I built many pieces of furniture after leaving home. One of my sons nows builds furniture now. I remember going out to the circus winter quarters and wating the wheelright rebuild circus wagon wheels at the Wallace Curcis quarters. Ah, the memories!

Hi Dave. Just wanted to drop a note to say how much I enjoy your videos. You have a real knack for explaining things in layman's terms. I have only met one other person in my 50 years of work who had such a gift. I learned a lot of things from him too.

Fitting iron to wood has always been up on my list of satisfying things to do. I first encountered it while resoring antique firearms and have since used this skill in restoring many and varied items. It's very interesting to watch you gradually bring these old and new parts into harmony with each other.

I had no idea what you were working on until it was nearly done as I am not at all familiar with horse drawn equipment. We have a single tree hanging on our fence as yard art and I knew it had something to do with horses, now I know exactly what it was for and I now know what a buggy pole is as well. I have been educated (in a small degree) and entertained at the same time. Great videos.

Not surprised that it was a process, initially it looks quite straightforward, then you look at the curves , angles , the angles of the fittings that aren't going to fit with that angle . It would have been a 2 bacon sandwich job . Great video 👍🇬🇧

regarding fitting the pole tip and "there's gotta be a better way": it really helps seeing someone with as much experience as you have do things like that the "hard way". I've had similar situations like that and it makes me question my abilities but seeing you have to go thru that process sorta reaffirms that I'm doing the best I can do in those situations. so thank you!

I'm in construction, sometimes a young guy comes along and says, why don't we try it this way, it's easier, depending how much time there is, I'll either say, just do it my way, or I let him try it his way, 99% of the time we end up going to back to the hard way, but every once in a while a young guy will teach me something new, most of the time they are just being lazy trying to get out of doing something hard.

Hello, My name is Walter Eldridge and I've just started watching a couple of your videos and I'm kind of interested in how things were done back in the days of horse and wagons. My dad was born in 1906 and shared stories of the days he drove teams of horses to haul coal or ice so your videos are a reminder of the way things were done in his day. Much of the kind of thing must have been done at the livery station and my dad would hitch up his team at the livery. I miss my dad very much and the stories he would tell. I've subscribed to your channel and I'm going to watch more of your previous videos. I'm sure you use more modern techniques to help you but I could imagine what it would have been like not having those certain things you have. It's going to be a trip down memory lane for me.

Although I've never fitted a pull tip specifically, putting metal sleeves over the end of a piece of wood is is something I'm familiar with. My preferred way of doing that - once a good fit is ensured - is to smear the end of the wood with hot glue. Then I'll heat the metal piece warm enough for the hot glue to smear on that too, give the glue on the wood a quick blast with a hot air gun(or similar), and slide the metal piece on. Hot glue is more flexible than the average wood glue, which lets the joint between dissimilar materials last longer. And if you should need to remove the metal fitting, heating it up will cause the glue to weaken and the piece can be pulled off without drama and possible damage to the wood.Well, depending on how hard it was forced on of course.Naturally, the metal piece would need to be reasonably clean inside for this to work.
