I like your channel and your grit! I recommend two must have books for what your doing. Like the must have copies of Chapman’s Piloting and Annapolis book of seamanship which should be on all boats IMO you need The Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction Book and Spurr’s Guide to Upgrading You Cruising Sailboat. Gouegon are the guys that invented West system and but there book covers all fiberglass issues. I would also get all oh Nigel Calders stuff too. All worth every penny IMO.

I’ll have a look at the construction books thanks for the info and compliments!

I believe your suppose to place the larger pieces on first then gradually place smaller pieces on. The reason is the larger section provide the greater grip over larger sections rather than starting with smaller pieces.

Yes the great debate ! It’s when you mention polyester or epoxy resin etc. I watched boatworks today where he said he does small first for many reasons, then I asked one of the expert shipwrights what he does and he said small first so that decided it for me. NOW I’m not saying my way is right or wrong but it’s one of those things with arguments for both sides. 😂

@@SailingPuffin small patch first is how I do it. Here is the rationale. Force follows the fiber. Forces concentrate where fibers end. If the end of a fiber is adjacent to an intact fiber, then the force is mostly taken up by that intact fiber. In the case of your technique, placing the smallest patch first, the force is taken up in much the same way as it was before the repair, it travels longitudinally along it's laminate layer and is dispersed as desired. Because you have beveled your repair, the cut ends of each patch layer do not line up, thus making it less likely that the force will travel through the laminate perpendicularly. If the largest patch is placed first, the intact fibers of that patch becomes a pathway for the force from the cut fibers of each smaller patch, concentrating the force of ALL of the cut fibers along the beveled edge of the repair. It is perhaps a moot point; I've seen many repairs done this way with apparent success but it seems the less correct method.

Nice work. You are going to need a through hole for your depth sounder and I would have one through hole 🕳 for a salt water wash down. For your anchor ⚓and other things you may want to clean up. Ok untell next time ⏲️ Aloha from the Big Island 🏝of Hawaii 🏝

I’ll be using a depth sounder that works through the hull without a hole if you get what I mean ! I’m sure I’ll be having a hole for saltwater for sinks maybe. I’m not sure yet but I feel safer cutting new holes !
@SailingPuffin

Also the way my depth sounder came out the bow it stuck out about an inch! If I hit anything like a log etc and it slid down the bow it would of caught on the old one for sure !

@@SailingPuffin those don't work very well. On the Newer boats 🚢they work ok. But when it counts one that has a though hole 🕳are way better and way more accurate.

@@SailingPuffin look at the books I suggested. I would think about one hole for saltwater intake with a sea chest and all outboard going discharges above the water line. Especially on your size boat with one head. The sea chest centralizes your intake to one spot on the boat with sea Cocks from the chest above the waterline.

One advantage with the peel-pky is, that it will absorb a little of the epoxy resin Wich may be in surplus. In that way, the peel ply actually makes the repair a bit stronger /ligther. But this advantage disappears when you add epoxy on the outside of peel-ply. So just roll the peel-ply, at stop.
@SailingPuffin
@SailingPuffin 3 года назад
Ah I thought it did that even putting epoxy on top and that it had to be wetted throughly as well! I’ll look into that thanks !

@@SailingPuffin you may ask your producer or your local boatbuilder just to make sure. But of course, the laminate must be free of air bubbles, before you put on the peel-ply. Besides, it looks good - well done!

to be honest, I´ve never seen a 26 foot boat with seven thru holes before 😂 Using epoxy I learned to go with the larger patches first. Maybe this is necessary because you bond the polyester surrounding with epoxy resin. But the way you did it looks fine to me.

I laughed watching someone talk about thru holes on RU-vid and the amount they had then stopped and counted mine. 😂 I shut up after that !
