Bragging is not what modesty is about . We did all of our bales by hand . So eighty to ninety pounds enough to lift onto thehay racks than back in the hay loft or outdoors hay stacks . Even restacking nine layers high outside wasn't a huge amount of fun ether. Width and height was done to keep as much rain and snow melt to a minimum amount of exposure except for the single top row . So each layer had four to six inches of exposure to mother nature . Our neighbors could see the amount of work that was done and mostly did the same . The most common thing that was talked about was the weather and who the crops were doing . And as always how much rain each area of land had gotten. Each farmer back in the day generally only one rain gage on their farm. Some years the elevators would give out rain gages for Christmas time as well as most merchants would give things for the wife's to use in the kitchen. Yes wife's had a bit to say if the husband could get a different tractor and maybe even a New one ?
