Russell's territorial kicking game is the best of the potential Lions 10s. It's not just that he should be in because of the razzle dazzle, his pinning the opposition back with the boot is the best of the lot, too.

I disagree. His kicking from hand has been really hit and miss this year. I’d have him as 10 for the Lions because he’d be the most exciting player to watch.

Several missed penalties to touch and I lost count of the number of times he needlessly (and inaccurately) kicked the ball away with penalty advantage. I’m a big Russell fan but he had a quiet 6 nations. In fact I don’t believe there was a standout performance from any fly-half this year.
@Allyphant2909
@Allyphant2909 3 года назад
@@peterwilson675 Scotland's entire attacking game is built on Russell and Hogg making teams play in their 22. The England game, the France game, and the 50mins where Scotland were battering Wales were the best territorial rugby played in the 6N by miles. Another thing is that not all Russell's attacking kicks come to fruition but that's not necessarily always what he is trying for. The variation in kicks messes with the opposition defensive shape. Even if he gives possession away with the odd chip or grubber, that's ok. As the game goes on defences say 'He has kicked for touch, kicked for distance, kicked cross field, chipped, and grubbered... what do we set up to cover?'. It's the long game of keeping things varied. A chip to nothing in the 7th minute might be what makes the defence go narrow in the 24th that makes space to play wide. The bottom line is that if Russell wants you to have a defensive lineout on your 5m ten times a game, you'll have a defensive lineout on your 5m ten times a game. You have a point about the missed touch penalties. He did drop a couple of clangers there.
@peterwilson675
@peterwilson675 3 года назад
The England game felt much more comfortable than the score line suggests and you’re right, I thought Scotland would be putting a record score on Wales based on the first 60 mins. The France game though... that was excruciating and the only way the win was ever going to be possible was if France didn’t turn up or threw in a classic French brain fart. I’m a sucker for a miracle pass and running rugby so I was very happy where the game was a few years ago with teams like Glasgow, Scarlets, Wasps etc... even Racing the season before the pandemic. It seems to me that teams have been forced into excessive territorial battles by the rule changes at the ruck. It’s virtually impossible to avoid giving a penalty away by throwing the ball around for fear of getting too isolated.

I think with the Lions and the pack they'd have you'd see Finn doing what he does for Racing on a weekly basis. He has detractors on here but ask the French what they think of him. Quite a few think he's the best player in the Top 14.

The excuse with Finn is that he does crazy shit which goes wrong and costs you games. As a Scotland fan who’s genuinely fairly unbiased, I can’t remeber the last time Finn cocked something up but didn’t do something amazing right after to make up for it. Fascinating decision either way isn't it? You could see Gatland picking any one of 4 at 10...which is probably more of an indication that none of them are bang on form delivering consistent performances. The edge Sexton, Biggar and Farrell have over Russell is that they have won things. Slams, European trophies, domestic leagues. I just think Gatland likes a 10 he can get a precise game plan out of. Not sure you can guarantee that with Finn. Looking forward to it whoever plays.

This is boring BS and totally wrong. Russell has been consistently one of the best 10s in the NH for 3-4 years. Yes he makes mistakes but guess what? So does Owen Farrell, Johnny "temper tantrum" Sexton and even Biggar. Rugby media loves to paint Russell as a 0 sum player: either brilliant or terrible and of course you fell for it. Yet the actual evidence on the field? Shows that simplistic stereotype to be complete rubbish. The irony is all the other 10s even Biggar have had the luxury of playing behind a good pack. Until very recently for Scotland Russell was playing behind a pack that struggled to win front foot ball. Yet? Russell still produced. That is something when it comes to Farrell and Sexton I have rarely if ever seen. They are completely reliant on front foot ball. Farrell especially, without it? He falls apart, kicks aimlessly, lacks any creativity and becomes a liability.

Russell is too unpredictable for Gatland, in my view. Biggar, Farrell and Sexton are more in Gatland's "grind them down first, then grind them down again, then use the flair if really necessary" style of play. Plus Russell's tackling and temperament is suspect and the Sarfies will run at him all day. I'd take Callum Sheedy before Finn Russell.

So can hardly be called a liability. BTW Finn Russell has circa 50 caps for Scotland, with 3 yellow cards and 1 red card so actually a worse record than Farrell. I think under Gatland, we could get the mix of Racing and mix of Scotland’s kicking. The unfortunate thing for Finn is he’s often relied upon to do something amazing to generate a try from Scotland. Where at Racing, he throws a bit of flair and the boys outside him are given that responsibility which works better for Russell’s game.

Kicking the ball out on the full multiple times and then having temper tantrums in both games. Russell by contrast played well within himself and with Hogg combined for some brilliant tactical kicking to win in France and against England at Twickers for the 1st time since 1983. You don't get to pin "mistakes" on Russell and ignore every other 10's mistakes just because it fits a lazy narrative. I know this for a fact there is no other 10 I'd rather have when down a few scores or whose pack is getting dominated, why? Because unlike Sexton and Farrell? Russell doesn't panic, he plays and sometimes leads his team back from a 31 point deficit with backs up.
