Hey guys - I know this comment's coming a bit late, but I'm still getting people bringing it up - so I thought I'd address it. Just in case you don't want to rewatch the video, here's the script for what I said about LSP & Finn, so I can reference it later. "After Finn, at least as far he believes, basically ruins Breezy’s life, his desire to try and feel anything at all is at an all time high - which is why, even if it’s not something that Finn would usually do, he allows himself to be taken advantage of by LSP. Does this make her a bad person? Almost certainly, something that shouldn’t be a revelation, but I don’t think this moment is really supposed to highlight her doing this horrible thing to Finn: the point is that Finn lets it happen. He’s so desperate for any semblance of emotion that he’s willing to give it a try, but all he finds is a new low - as his flower continues to wilt." First of all, using the phrase 'let it happen,' despite my intent, was definitely a mistake - but I still think this video makes it pretty clear that I obviously don't think that Finn is at all to blame for what LSP did. As I say in the script, LSP is a bad person for doing this, and, if this interaction occurred between two real life human beings, not characters with 'character arcs,' that would be the main takeaway. But, since this episode is focused on Finn's depression, I thought, and still do think, that the part of this interaction worth discussing is Finn's reaction - a reaction that's driven by what he's going through in the episode - as he does something that he normally wouldn't do. I totally get if you thought that I should have talked about this with more tact, as I definitely could have, but if you came away from this video thinking that the point of this was to excuse what LSP did because Finn didn't physically fight back - then I don't think I can convince you otherwise.
@Sanstorm09
@Sanstorm09 2 месяца назад
i think you handled it well, that being said. i took you saying “he let it happen” not as it being his fault, but that he just didn’t really fight it, which is so out of character for finn. i’ve dealt with similar situations and can definitely attest to that feeling of just wanting to succumb even tho it’s not what you really want. i appreciate you didn’t undermine what lsp did was wrong. you just weren’t here to talk about how shitty lsp is, you were here to talk about finn’s mental health. i can tell you put a lot into this video, it came out good regardless of your unintentional mishandling and you took that in itself in stride. thank you for sharing this video and also recognizing where you could’ve improved.

I think that my main issue isn't with how you phrased the bit with finn, but around 22 minutes in you said that you don't think what lsp did was sexual assault, and I heavily disagree because while it's up to interpretation as to whether it was rape or not, it was sexual assault because it is heavily implied that lsp took it further than what finn was okay with and he vocalized that, yet she continued further. that is at least assault, and since it was at least kissing or making out, that had to have been sexual assault or something like it. I know you intended better phrasing, but please make sure you know more of what you're talking about and how to phrase things like sexual assault, which is already super dismissed if it wasn't something like rape. again, I know you had good intentions, but that doesn't change the impact that the way things are phrased can have. I'm not trying to get on your case too much about this, but I did want to express how I just think that it's a really bad way to phrase what lsp did. she sexually assaulted him, not almost did, and they clearly portrayed that he did not give consent to go further, yet she did it anyway.

Finn has a delayed reaction realizing that Martin isn’t the only cause of his problems and about his arm. I do think there is a line though between a boundary crosser and a sexual assaulter. LSP was a terrible partner in this interaction because she was unaware of Finn feelings and comfort zone but I would like to believe at least for the sake of my own feelings towards the character that had Finn declaratively said no she would have backed off. Crossing people's boundaries was a long-established character trait of LSP so it doesn't damage how I feel about her that much

When I was a kid these episodes freaked me out a lot. I was really attached to Finn and the seemingly permanent change of him losing his arm made me really upset. In a weird sort of way, I went through stages of grief too. Then when Breezy came out> Even though I got what I wanted at the time with him getting his arm back, it felt unsatisfying, and I stopped caring about the show as much after that. But now as an adult, these are some of my favorite episodes by far, and I think my initial reaction to them actually makes them even better for me now. They're a really dark period of the show and I'm glad people are still talking about it. Thank you for making this video.

I believe Finn's psychic arm is mix of his mental power and dipping his toe into madness. Finn has always had great mental power examples being resisting/fighting Goliad's probing and The Lich's Commands, turning on Jake's imagination from his own head, and breaking free of King Worm. When Finn reached "Martin" his psychic arm became bigger and stronger, he also did a crazy laugh similar to Ice King's laugh. When Finn stopped letting that madness control him the arm disappeared.

It's cool to see you cover an entire arc. I haven't watched these episodes in a while, but I never felt too cheated by Finn regaining his arm since it always felt like Finn emotionally processing his grief was the point of the arc. It's similar to "Is That You?" or "Hall of Egress" in the sense that the logic of the episode is hard to explain in words, but the emotional outcome _feels_ correct. Returning to your previous state after going through a major internal change is actually really common in Adventure Time. PB became 18 again, Marcie became a vampire again, Jake stopped being a blue alien, and technically Ice King was Simon's altered state, so even he reverted back to his original self. So it's kind of interesting to see how people react differently to all these instances. In any case, I liked Breezy (the episode), but the songs in particular are what stick in my brain. Finn and Breezy's voices sound great and the lyrics are good at conveying their emotions without being blunt. But also the visuals just nail what Finn is going through more than words can say.

I always thought it was really weird and crazy, but in the good way that adventure time always dose it. It also surprised me when you said that fins arm came back only two episodes later. I never remember the time being that short. For me it felt like a long time, and maybe that’s because of air dates on tv as opposed to streaming.

I think it's not insignificant to kinda emphasize that Finn doesn't like LSP as a person, she's a selfish, rude, and imo annoying person, and the fact that Finn would be willing to let her take advantage of him despite those character traits, and the fact that we know he doesn't enjoy her company, isn't insignificant

Oh, totally. It shows how far he's willing to stoop in his pursuit of emotion. Nothing that would normally make him happy is making him feel anything - so he does the logical thing, and tries something that would make him miserable. It's dark, sad, and completely appropriate for a teenage boy struggling to find joy in the wake of loss.

I think Finn's telekinetic arm makes perfect sense within the established world building of the show. The mutagenic bomb/the catalyst comet tilted the balance of reality towards the magical and fantastical. We've seen Finn and Jake manifest magical abilities outside of their usual skill set on multiple occasions. Jake and Jermaine have twin telepathy despite not actually being twins and just having been born at the same time. When ice King paralyzed Finn and Jake Finn was able to call upon butterflies because of his past life as a butterfly that he could control telepathically. And as early as the first two seasons Finn rubs his hands together and shoots a fireball onto a pile of brush and there is no explanation given whatsoever. So I have no problem believing that Finns frustration could absolutely result in the manifestation of psychic powers. Especially since let's not forget Finn is not a normal person he is a reincarnation of a catalyst comet just like the Lich he is tied to cosmic forces more than a regular denisen of Oo

i think that two episodes separating escape from the citadel and the tower actually help enhance your point about the five stages of grief as we see finn without the arm but its "normal" adventure time fun episodes, showing that finn is in denial. he's just continuing on. especially since hes a child. yes he's gone through other traumatizing stuff but not everyone will have the typical trauma reaction people expect from tv, the crying and screaming and other dramatic moments. people who have gone through a lot of traumatic things tend to just continue on-thinking that it's normal while it affects their behavior or until they come to that breaking point. i think that's where finn is. in that space of numbness and denial before the reality sits in. and the beginning of the tower is him moving from that denial and into the other stages. or if you want to give an outside the show view, they might've just wanted happier episodes in between the more heavier ones to give people a little bit of break. anyway, love the video! i've always loved breezy and the whole arc here so i love to see people defend it!

I LOVE Breezy as an episode and have since it aired. I think a lot of this analysis gets it pretty spot on, but I think it's worth pointing out that the reason why the guardian goop didn't heal Fin's arm was because it wasn't a wound, it was a physical manifestation of loss. And unfortunately, loss is something you have to process, not heal, and it never REALLY goes away. I don't think that the loss of Fin's arm is about Fin rejecting love, but is about the loss of an important person in his life and the lack of love felt in that loss. It's very easy to try to find replacements for healthy parental attachment in romance, and that's really what the heart of this episode is about. When you aren't securely attached to anyone, you look for anyone who will inspire feelings of security and love in you. Unlike the princesses that Fin pursues though, Breezy is the real deal. I think your interpretation sells her short in some ways, her appearance at the end of the episode is directed to Fin, commanding him to arise. She's here offering Fin the unconditional love that he didn't receive from his father, even though she knows she'll get nothing in return. Breezy's ending is also not as happy as you make it out to be here. While she does end up happy to have Fin's flower, her actions to prioritize Fin directly mean that something she cares deeply about, the flower, will soon be gone forever. The flower has already begun to wilt and now it can never recover. This is a moment of sacrifice for Breezy, where she prioritizes the person she loves over what she wants, and that is a big element for how Fin is ultimately healed. He doesn't even think that it was her, remembering it as coming from the "PB Fin Sword" moment he had.

This was an example of how the experience is different watching a show when it's all out compared to watching it when it's still coming out. When AT was coming out in real time, I was upset about "backtracking" and "filler" but when rewatching it now none of that seems like a big deal. I raged in real time about "Sad Face" but on a rewatch and just treating it like another episode and not an "interruption" I don't have any problem with it because I know things will get back on track shortly. My wife had never watched the show when it was out and when I binged the entire thing with her she commented that that episode was actually one of her favorites.

I think the theme of Finn continuously losing his arm and his sword to quickly find a new arm and new sword work as a metaphor of life. It's like over and over again, you realize nothing works like you think it does and you are completely lost with no idea of what you can do or what you are supposed to do and then you kind of get a grip of things again and you keep on going and you're supposed to pretend everything is fine but you know the arm you are using every day might be the wrong arm and it's not the arm you started with. You lost that a long time ago and when you try and recall that it's like you're looking at a film about a person who isn't you. PS If anyone liked LSP before Breezy I can't relate to that.

While I agree that PB at the end of Breezy represents love, I disagree on the form of love she represents. To contextualise my view, when losing his arm and finding out his dad is a deadbeat Finn doesn't grieve his father, who he never knew, but the self-concepted idea of his father. He also grieves the loss of his pure-hearted optimism about people (as stated). Realising these two flaws in his identity and worldview, as well as causing the loss of his arm through a stubbornness to accept that, I believe he develops a deep sense of self-loathing. I think this explains his inability to find a more healthy path to healing and why the healing goop has no effect on him (not thinking he deserves to heal). So then when Breezy sings about the love beyond reason it is an experience Finn is all too familiar with regarding PB ("this memory of feeling") and which he feels shameful for. However, Breezy sings of acceptance and forgiving herself as she kneels down, giving herself to her emotion rather than feeling shame for it. So when the figure of PB appears to Finn, she is both a mentor (from "my hero arise") and an embodiment of the feelings Finn empathises with in Breezy. A reflection of his own experience but with the addition of seeing Breezy rise above what Finn sees as a flaw in himself. When PB tells Finn to let love be his guide, its a love for himself he must feel. To accept the "flaws" of his identity as entirely a part of himself, and to let his and Breezy's mutual experience with love guide a path to seeing them not simply as flaws but part of the branching :) network of his whole self. He cannot be the selfless hero without this worldview and identity.

He was saying that the point of the scene wasn’t to highlight that lumpy space Princess did something awful disgusting but to highlight how low fin has fallen that he was willing to let it happen instead of do anything at all to prevent it. She took advantage of him, but that he was able to be taken advantage of given the circumstances and how uncomfortable he seemed afterwards showcases something about his situation too and that’s what was being highlighted, obviously. The episode doesn’t focus on LSP at all after that.

Saying Finn “let’s it happen” is a phrase that personally really bothers me. He didn’t say yes or consent verbally or nonverbally. That phrase historically has been used to minimize SA victims’ suffering and legitimacy. LSP straight up assaulted him. I feel like because Finn is a boy it gets played down A LOT. But SA is SA, no matter the gender. I appreciate the point you’re making about the overall episode and Finn dealing with depression, but I feel like that point could have been made without minimizing the rather obvious signs that the scene implies SA/being forced into a situation you’re not comfortable with.

I've already responded to a different comment with a similar sentiment, but just so it doesn't seem like I'm ignoring this - That's not what I was trying to say, and I'm really sorry if it came out that way! Obviously, as I say in the video, LSP is in the wrong. While I don't think that it's canon that LSP rapes Finn after the cut to black, even in the stuff that we do see, LSP is clearly and entirely the one at fault. The point I was trying to make is that the point of the scene is that Finn doesn't fight back - not that this proves that he was somehow not a victim, as he definitely was, but just in a sense that it proves how bad his depression had gotten. This episode is about Finn, and thus the focus of the episode is his response to the actions of those around him - not the terrible things that LSP does here.

@@AmpleSamuel first, sexual assault isn’t always r@pe… sexual assault involves ANY unwanted sexual contact, including kissing (which we see implied with LSP’s lips approaching the screen after Finn basically saying “that’s it, we’re done.”) I never said it was r@pe, but I am saying there is NO doubt that it was SA based on factual definition of the phrase. Given this is a HEAVILY SA coded scene, when you said “he let it happen to him,” it was just poorly chosen wording that is dismissive of survivors of SA. I get that you didn’t mean it that way for the sake of your depression argument, but it’s worth noting for future use to not use victim-blaming language. I actually enjoyed your interpretation of the episode and thought you had some great points (I too think Breezy is an episode that explores deeper topics pretty well and that it was interesting for Finn’s character growth). But for the future please consider the connotations certain phrases will always have. You are a skilled analyst, so please just consider the ramifications of your words in future videos. That’s all I’m saying.

I definitely see where you’re coming from here. As you could probably tell, I danced around the topic a little bit in this video because I’m obviously not experienced/qualified/comfortable going deep into topics like this - especially when Finn’s mental health was the focus of the video - and while I definitely wasn’t trying to imply that LSP didn’t take advantage of Finn, I see that I should have used different language when getting to that point. Thanks for taking time to write your feedback, it’s very appreciated.

I would argue the episodes in between finn losing his arm and the tower are necessary. I always read them as being that stage of 'life goes on' when you're depressed. Everything is falling down around you, you feel empty as fuck, but you still gotta put your functioning face on and pretend that you're fine and you're good until you just can't anymore. But then, i guess i could be projecting lol.

I think it’s kind of fucked up that you say Finn “allowed himself” to be taken advantage of. It feels dismissive of him being a victim. I don’t know just feels gross to say that. It feels like you’re just making an excuse for LSP. You can like the episode without trying to excuse the actions of an abuser.

Finn is the most human character in any kid show, or most shows in general to date. He may be a hero, but it doesn't mean he's always right. He may be compassionate, but it isn't always in the right moments. He is a human character, with flaws as we all have. And self impressions of himself that hold him back, that we all put on ourselves as well. It is amazing to see him grow and grow with him.

Sorry if this has already been said in this comment section but I think another reason Finn regaining his arm works is because... he didn't regain it. The way he loses it in 'Reboot', with it easily being undone shows that his arm coming back was just for show, it looked like his arm but it really wasn't and was never going to be permanent. It seems to be similar to how Fern was able to look like regular Finn despite still being made of grass. Yes I'm sure Finn getting his arm back was required by the network but I still think this way of doing it ultimately benefited his arc. Finn does grew in the episode 'Breezy' but he was still extrememly immature and couldn't accept the idea of his arm being gone, he needed to return to some form of status quo. So he doesn't actually lose his arm for a second time in Reboot, instead he is now forced to no longer lie to himself and accept that his arm was always gone. And now he is able to do just that after all his growth since Breezy.

I think people take this arc out of the context of the whole series. Without Finn getting his arm back, we wouldn't have had Fern be a larger part of season 9 and 10. The Finn/Fern story arc is potentially my favorite despite it being sad overall. I was upset that his arm came back in such a short period of time, but overall I appreciate what they did after rewatching the series last year.

overall a great video and great analysis but i have to disagree with the sentiment that finn "allows himself to be taken advantage of." consent must also be genuine and enthusiastic to a degree, if someone is passive in response to being pushed for more kissing/sexual stuff then it's not consentual. Whether or not the 'making out' symbolised more, it doesn't really matter because either way it's still assault. we both agree that what LSP did was shitty, I just wanted to point it out. thanks for the video

Wait so your argument is that Finn is physically strong enough to fight LSP? This isn't any less sexual assault. He told her he wasn't comfortable and she gave him no opportunity. The fact that using physical self-defense was his only option, proves that this is inherently assault. And not wanting to physically act against her does not make what happened his own doing, that's victim blaming

As a kid, I found Breezy to be weird and too-abstract for my kid brain, but when I rewatched the show at 20, I realized how good Finn's whole arc of losing his arm is. I have a really complicated and messed up relationship with my estranged father, and the way Finn goes through a similar thing I felt myself relating so hard, and reconsidering how I was approaching my grief. The depiction of depression was so incredibly realistic too, but put in a way where he's still "Finn," if that makes any sense. Anyway, I'm rambling, but Breezy is good

I disagree about the eps before the Tower. He was so in denial he was pretending everything was normal. Deep depression looks exacly like that. I went theough that. You pretend so much to trick other people you almost believe it yourself until you finally snap and get angry. You don't stay in shock, or look empty. You look happy. You can even laugh and dance. Buy you just aren't actually happy. It was super accurate as someone who has lived through it. There is a reason most of the time people don't realize others are suicidal. Life continues no matter what you feel. People continue to live their happy lives and you act like you are part of it. It would be way weirder if we skipped those eps. I would also say Finn getting a psychic arm isn't weird. Finn isn't really a human. He is a comet in a human body. Finn is far stranger than regular humans. It isn't just plot armor. At his core he is magic. And magic rages in insanity, which rage and depression are. I would also point out LSP really did just make out with Finn, not sex. The creators said so. She was still super selfish, and it mirrors how he treated Flame Princess. It was a hard lesson. He had been blessed to not have people really be selfish towards him until then. He learned it is not a nice feeling and from that point forward stops. It isn't fair.

still shocked people overwhelmingly didn't like Finn losing his arm and the way he got it back by being like any other teen. Too close to home for some maybe lol? In all seriousness, I always thought these episodes were so good for being honest and messy with characters while playing with how people don't make the right choices when they're not in the right headspace. All the while, that doesn't necessarily make you a good or bad person but human. Finn's known as "Finn the Human" after all. As for the LSP stuff, I mean yeah it's pretty bad. But also, teens and young adults make dumb decisions all the time and regretting an intimate encounter is also an equally valid situation some people find themselves in. Shying away from that messiness just creates more shame and misconceptions over those situations,. All that does is create the perception that these things never happen at all or that there's' something inherently wrong with you for being someone who did a less-than-wise decision in your youth. Ngl, at the time of release, the people who were so against these episodes conceptually were usually trying to play some sort of moral high ground (over fictional characters...) which just looked like deflection over probably being in similar situations. Or maybe it was just extreme innocence and lack of awareness as to what sort of story these episodes were going for, hard to tell.

Ok but he loses the arm again and this time it stays gone. Like even into distant lands and Fiona and cake. He got his arm back, but lost it again for realsies this time. I know you mentioned that also, but the way you kept saying "it wasn't permanent" felt a bit dishonest. I think it has more to do with the curse of the grass sword. The grass sword was cursed, that curse bonded with finn by flesh and spirit. That's why it reacted to him not wanting to lose Martin again. And the damn sword imbedded itself into his flesh and was also brought back by the goo. And this return of his arm leads to both the finn sword and Fernn. And the second loss of his arm. Becuase he was always going to lose that arm. That was always the end game.

This is a fair point, and given how many people have pointed it out I definitely should have worded things differently, but I do think it's important to acknowledge that my discussion of the events in this episode are obviously not how I would view them if this was an interaction between actual people. While viewing Finn as a character, and in the context of this story, I think the fact that he accepts his fate and doesn't visibly fight back is reflective of his current state and worth discussing as such - but I would never say the same thing about an actual Finn-aged person who went through an experience like this. Thank you for your input though, definitely been learning some stuff by reading everybody's comments about how I handled this episode.
