Finrod's Dilemma

This takes place in The Silmarillion during the chapter "Of Beren and Lúthien" at the time when Beren is in Nargothrond requesting help from Finrod and for him to fulfil his oath to Beren’s father Barahir. Finrod has to weigh up the two oaths, the Oath of Fëanor and his Oath to Barahir and his descendants. The poem and song were written by Evan Langford with some editing input from Dillon Rodriguez-Currie. Evan recorded the vocals for the song and I (Phillip Menzies) arranged the music and put it all together. The silmarils are at the centre of both oaths and Finrod goes through an internal crisis to come to the decision that his oath to Barahir holds more weight than the Oath of Fëanor. In response he abdicates and passes the crown over to Orodreth. The action takes place in SilmFilm S6 E5.
This is a very intimate piece led with cello for the Oath leitmotif, with the piece primarily played by a stringed quartet (2 x violins, viola and cello) with harp and six vocal lines for the Oath of Fëanor (one part for each living son), before the lead vocals delivered by Evan Langford are sung with feeling. The cello plays a counter melody. The bridge has the full orchestra joining, beginning at very soft volume with a slow crescendo. Vocal ahs build in number and intensity as Finrod’s internal conflict comes to a climax. The bridge has The Oath of Fëanor played on trumpet and the song about the Silmarils representing his oath to Barahir playing alternately as the music intensifies. The building intensity is assisted by the strings starting with contrabasses, followed by cellos, violas, 2nd and finally 1st violins playing Morgoth’s Triad. The string quartet takes up the final verse again and Finrod’s resolve is shown with the final unaccompanied word with reverb. He will not let the world drown.

I'm gonna start this out by saying the song is absolutely beautiful. I love it. However, I have some criticism regarding the frame narrative, specifically one statement: "Finrod has to weigh up the two oaths, the Oath of Fëanor and his Oath to Barahir and his descendants." Finrod doesn't really care if the Oath of Feanor is fulfilled, since he didn't swear it. He rather weighs between his oath to Barahir and his foresight that he will die on the quest (plus the fear that Celegorm and Curufin would cause them trouble because of their oath). He decides to help Beren out of faithfulness, even knowing it'll be his death. Thus he basically is the counterexample to the Feanoreans in regards to dealing with oaths. He's responsible about it and even follows it when it gets bad for him. Anyway, I digress. This isn't to say the song is bad (Eru knows it's not), just an inaccuracy I wanted to point out. Á harya almárea ré!

The Oath of Feanor is an issue for Finrod because 2 of Feanor's sons are residing in Nargathrond at the time. He knows that fulfilling his oath to Barahir will put him at odds with Curufin and Caranthir....thanks to the Oath of Feanor.

@@TheMarcHicks Right, I think we're worried about the influence of a certain Amazon series which depicts (incorrectly) Finrod taking the Oath of Fëanor. My reading of this passage suggest's Finrod's dilemma wasn't so much about the Oath but the impact of the Doom of Mandos, which came upon him and all the Noldor.

I too am going to start out by saying this is wonderful and I too, love it. Bit concerned about the prominence given to the Oath of Fëanor, since Finrod wasn't involved in it and never took it. Hope this isn't the insidious influence of Amazon's erroneous narrative! His dilemma was indeed about keeping his Oath to Barahir, but that was weighed against the Curse of Mandos which lay upon him and all the Noldor, and the doom that came upon almost all who coveted the Silmarils.

I can assure you @englishlady9797 that this has been in no way influenced by the Rings of Power. I would encourage you to check out the Silmarillion Film Project on the Tolkien Professor podcast to get more context.

@@philmen32 Tolkien Professor? As in Corey Olsen, founder of Signum University? The same institution whom recent leaks have shown recieved money from Amazon? Too much of a co-incidence that this just happens to suggest Finrod took the Oath of Feanor and Rings of Power shows the same, considering the close connection Olsen and Signum have with the former....

Finrod was Vanyar above all else like all that were regarding the house of Finarfin through the sister of Ingwë! Etc. all the immediate family of Galadriel were friends to many clans of dwarves, men. (Finrod discovered and befriended the very forefathers of the main houses of the Edain.)

The crown overlayed on top of the history reminds me of the black speech in the background of Council of Elrond in movie adaptation. Anyway, great song!

This one is tugging at my heartstrings. I really think Finrod deserved to live. I mean, Finarfin didn’t even leave Tirion, and he kept his promises (RESPONSIBLE ONES I MIGHT ADD). Also, he’s helping be a huge thorn in Morgoth’s side. I mean, come on!!!

I meant Finrod kept his promises, just to clarify.
