The Oath of Feanor

An original piece of music for the Silmarillion Film Project podcast with the Mythgard Institute and Signum University. This piece started from a forum post stating that the Dies Irae should find its way into the score particularly in the Oath of Feanor scene. Marie Prosser jumped in very quickly and started on a translation of the oath into quenya. With a lot of collaboration regarding pronunciation, timing and some retranslating, the final shape of this piece fell into place. I felt that it needed to have the feel of John William’s Duel of the Fates from Star Wars Ep1 or Howard Shore’s Revelation of the Ringwraiths from The Fellowship of the Ring.
Musically the piece begins with my piece the Fall. After this we get the tubular bell pealing three notes over and over indicating the call of the elves and at the same time 4 long notes that will come to represent any oath. The main emphasis of the chorus is on the pattern of the Dies Irae. One note is sounded with three gongs followed by the next three notes. The 1st verse covers who the swearers will take their vengeance out on and the 2nd verse is the vengeance and the final line states the doom of the swearers if they fail and is sung to my Doom theme.
The words belong to Feanor. The voices reiterating it are his 7 sons, thus 7 vocal parts. During the seasons as each son dies, a voice will be dropped from the Oath until Maglor being the only son left will have a single voice with harp or lyre. The Oath will become hollow and without power.
This is truly a collaborative effort with input from the following people:
o Translation by Marie Prosser, Chesapeake, Virginia USA
o Vocal Pronunciation by Kathleen Dallin, Calgary, Alberta Canada
Contributors from USA
o Charlie Vaughn vocals, Redondo Beach, California
o Megan De Cenzo vocals, Colorado Springs, Colorado

The wording of the oath was so explicit and so eerily foretelling that it so completely doomed the Sons of Feanor. They were unable to escape or find a loophole or indeed, seek forgiveness and repentance. They could do nothing except push on and on, further and fall deeper until the very objects they sought to reclaim burned them. Feanor sacrificed his children in the same way he did everything: thoroughly and with finality.

Celebrimbor was wise not to follow his grandfather, father and six uncles in this folly. In a way he had inherited the wisdom of his great-grandfather Finwe alone amongst Feanor's line. More alike to his great-uncle Fingolfin.
@danielrhouck
@danielrhouck 2 года назад
One explanation I saw was that he saw how badly his grandfather messed up, so decided to not make any of the same mistakes. For example, a lot of trouble was caused by Feanor working alone and not trusting his half-cousins, so he decided to work with and trust Annatar.
@cpegg5840

+ Daniel And in working with “Annatar” Celebrimbor had sunk into his own folly; a folly that saw him end up as a corpse strung up on a banner for Sauron’s armies. At least he kept Nenya, Narya and Vilya out of Sauron’s grasp.
@Gyrosmeister

The cause to reclaim the Silmarils was just. And Celebrimbor still followed all the way till Nargonthrod and even after leaving Curufin he didn't forget his heritage. This is why we see the star of Feanor in Moria and him wanting to surpass Feanor in craftsmanship which led to the rings

I love how the background music toggles from a lot to barely any whenever they say "Eru Iluvatar" (my Fanon explanation is that them invoking Eru for something that Eru does not support but they are compelled to do it anyway is breaking the universe and the universe had to do a reboot!)
@d.b.624

I interpret it as the music of creation fading away from their false oath. Not that they will not keep the oath, but that their oath is false to the world itself. For what is this oath (and the murder and destruction it brought) but turning away from the real things of creation (elves, humans, thinking creatures) for the things made by people?

There was a comment which has now disappeared about liking the intro but being disappointed that there was no musical outro. To address that I want to point out that this piece of music has quite a few of my other themes embedded in it. The intro is the Fall, the tubular bells sound out the three note call to the elves that all elvish themes contain, the Noldor motif appears throughout and in the latter half Morgoth's Triad appears. Finally the end part which make a musical departure from the rest and is essentially the outro is my Doom theme.

For an eventual next mythgard singers project, it might be extremely helpful to have a female & a male part recorded in advance & have that with the music for reference. The oath that brought an end to Beleriand and ultimately saw it, its history, its great cities and monuments, its great kings and heroes of legend sink into the sea forever lost to the Ages. It haunts all, and not just those that swore it. @NiennaFan1 Год назад
@@philmen32 ooooohhhh you don't- ajdskl;ajsdfkl;ajfksdla;jfkal;sd this is my favorite thing ever Okay so Ñoldorin Quenya changed the "th" sound, which Tolkien represented with the letter thorn (Þ) to "s" (there was already a letter that was pronounced "s" but the "th" sound was lost so like "Súlimo" and "Sindar" are spelled with the s letter that used to be th) but Fëanor hated that - because he wanted the language to be unchanged in case they ever met the Elves that hadn't made it to Middle-earth, but also because the shift happened while Míriel Þerindë was alive and she hated being called "Serindë" and so Fëanor saw the shift as yet another attempt to erase the memory of his mother and insisted on speaking with a lisp! This information can be found in The Shibboleth of Fëanor (a shibboleth is a pronunciation difference based on ethnic or political or whatever differences - it's named after an ancient Hebrew word that was pronounced alternately with a "s" and a "th", I think). Interestingly, because the Teleri and Vanyar kept the "th", the House of Finarfin also said "th" to honor Eärwen and her people, except for Galadriel, who said "s" just because she hated Fëanor that much! So the thorn joke is the funniest dumb Silm joke ever in my opinion - like inthithing on thpeaking like thith to show your thupport for the Houthe of Fëanor (more commonly fanþ copy-paþte the þorn letter inþtead), or there was a Tumblr post that said the hobbits must have been so surprised when Strider gets to Rivendell and starts using the right fork for each meal and speaking three different types of Elvish, and then a reblog said that the "three types of Elvish" were probably Sindarin, Quenya, and ÞÞÞÞ get-kicked-out-of-Lothlórien Quenya (which of course Elrond would probably use sometimes, having been raised by Fëanorions). Unfortunately, however, "Indis" and "Silmaril" are spelled with the letter that was always pronounced s, so no lisping opportunities there :(

Would it be okay to record a solo Acapella of this?

Sure thing Mark. Make sure you credit me as the composer and please post a link here.

Mark, did you ever record your solo acapella version of The Oath of Feanor? I would love to hear it. I also included The Oath in my newer piece Finrod’s Dilemma.

Is this song sang in Quenya or Sindarin?
@philmen32
@philmen32 8 месяцев назад
It is Quenya. It was important to get the language right. The elves in the blessed realm spoke Quenya. It wasn’t until they returned to Middle Earth that the Noldor spoke Sindarin.

Finding keepeth or afar casteth… why do all those words in Quenya start with H?
@philmen32
@philmen32 4 месяца назад
I asked that myself when doing vocals. It was very difficult to sing.

Tolkien likes alliterative verse, and it seemed a shame *not* to use that translation...but I do apologize to the singers, as I imagine it was quite difficult to say!

@@7SonsofFeanor there is always more than one translation. No need to apologise. The singers were up for the challenge (including me) and we got a great result.

Of course not. That is why he is still in the Halls of Mandos. That is a long time to think about nothing 😕

I think he was right to chase after Morgoth, since the passive Valar didnt. Just not how he went about it...

I find it very very amusing that this is the comment in which "Feanor" was misspelled - how dare you translate his firey spirit (fea) to Thindarin???
