Byleth, the player avatar for Fire Emblem Three Houses, could have been a truly great character to play as. However, due to a multitude of factors, the individual never quite lives up to the potential.

I'm actually very glad they didn't have full voice acting - in the case of Fallout 4, a fully voice acted protagonist was a pretty bad for 'immersion' or the roleplay part of RPG and made the dialogue very restrictive (although FE3H does have some restrictive dialogue choices anyway).

I feel the problem with Byleth is a result in not committing to a certain archetype. They needed to either make him a silent but fully-customizable avatar character or a fleshed-out character with an unchangeable name. What we got in the end was so weird. Why even name Byleth if we don't get to customize him/her other than gender?
@thecrimsommedic493
@thecrimsommedic493 4 года назад
I think when you can't change the character's customization it makes you appreciate the character more. At least that's how I look at it, but I get the name change thing. I think we should just get the natural character's name.

The point is that Byleth is inoffensive enough for the player to self-insert as. It's obvious when you look around in fanon discourse that enough of the fans write Byleth as a self-insert.

Likely because the dood is almost 1000-2000 years old by now. Plenty of time to meet many many people and thus learn many many things. I love the man myself. I always like the older mentor characters who act as guide and foils to other characters which makes me dislike Byleth's professor gimmick being so underutilized in the supports.

Where I thought they wasted potential is within the Byleth/Sothis dynamic. Byleth, an emotionally stunted, but gifted tactician, and Sothis, a powerful disembodied spirit without memories. When Sothis awakens, and the two begin interacting in Byleth's mind, Byleth begins to show emotions, and Sothis begins to remember events from her past. Byleth gains access to Sothis' powers, and Sothis gains access to Bylteh's experiences to the point where it starts to become hard to distinguish one's memory and experience from the other. Rhea's original intention was the Byleth would become the vessel to resurrect the Goddess, but for some reason or other, things don't go as planned. In Chapter 10, when they fall into the void, Sothis "merges" with Byleth, giving Byleth her power, while her spirit toodles off somewhere. The endgame between them plays out differently depending on which story line you go with, as well as who you pick as your love interest. As I see it should have happened, Byleth and Sothis are both incomplete entities. Byleth has mind and body, and Sothis the soul and power, and neither can ever become complete without the other. This merger between them should have completed the process that had been slowly accumulating until that point, as both incomplete beings merge to become one complete entity. Neither replacing the other, but both one and the same. While this would not be entirely what Rhea hoped for, I think it's the best of both worlds, and she would not be able to distinguish between her mother and the Professor. Reawakened, Byleth/Sothis reemerges from the void to proceed to kick Solon's ass, and as the rest of the story progresses, he/she begins to (re)discover who they were as they grow more powerful, and beyond the end of the game, to grow back into godhood as they lead Fodlan into a bright and prosperous future. That's my take on it, anyways.

This was a great read. You know what actually would've been really interesting? If after the merge Byleth gained more personality or if they were no longer mute. That really would've signified a great change within Byleth. It also would've been really cool to see Byleth become an active player, "cementing" the house/path you chose at the beginning of the game. Of course the amount of time, resources, and money it would cost to do that would be bonkers.
@BlackEpyon
@BlackEpyon 4 года назад
@@DreamerADV Byleth wasn't exactly "mute" , she just tended not to talk more than necessary. That would change though. Merging their personalities would also happen, yes. Or rather maybe, restoring them to what her personality once was, with additional elements due to her new experiences from two separate perspectives, leaving her as greater than the sum of her parts. I can imagine a scene that could cement the idea of Byleth being Sothis' reincarnation further. It's a recollection of Byleth's own past (which the story writers left rather blank), before Sothis awakened. Maybe Jeralt is talking to a client, and the client casually asks to be introduced to Jeralt's stoic young child who they see standing behind him (or maybe off in a corner or something). The camera zooms in to young Byleth to reveal a face that looks eerily similar to Sothis, but with blue eyes and a mop of dark-blue hair, rather than green eyes and hair. Sothis, recollecting the memory with you, then chimes in that "Hey, you looked just like me back then! That's interesting." Or something along those lines. That would make Byleth a more "mature" version of Sothis' childlike form, and this would be one more piece to add to the mystery. Imagine the Goddess regaling someone a tale of when she grew up as a mercenary! At the endgame, I find it hard to imagine Byleth leading the church directly (depending on what happens to Rhea), especially when you are technically the object of worship. That would be both self-serving, and narcissistic. But I could see her sitting through the service quietly in a corner, "listening" to the prayers, rather than praying herself. Let Seiros lead her own church. She's the one best suited for it. I do see her being a moderating influence on Rhea though, if you go with the SIlver Snow route, and get S-level support with her (she sticks around). Early in the game, you realize that Rhea takes it VERY personally whenever somebody insults "her mother." Byleth would calmly explain to her that blasphemy is a victimless crime, and what matters more is whether or not they are causing harm to others. Rhea might still object though, and that could be an interesting dynamic between them. Speaking of listening to prayers, how many frivolous requests do you suppose the Goddess gets in a day? How many times is she thanked for supposedly helping somebody find their car keys, etc? Just being the arbiter of souls ought to be taxing enough, especially after a long battle, as she individually helps them find peace. You'd have to really appreciate just how much vies for her attention, and how she still finds time to help those around her. If there's anything godlike about her, it's her ability to multitask while seeming no more than a little absent minded, and yet still able to answer your questions. Even before the merger, Byleth was noticed to be constantly busy, running about the monastery, doing half a dozen things at once. I could see Byleth casually addressing Lady Rhea as Seiros when they're alone (just as Rhea sometimes calls Byleth "Mother," when she gets emotional). At first, it could be accidental - just a slip, as a some of her memories of Seiros are beginning to resurface. Sothis might wonder where THAT slip came from, but would remark that it has to be more than just a slip, and that they must have been close before. One more piece to the mystery. Later it would be casual, and more deliberate, as the two rediscover their mother-daughter relationship. Something similar would probably happen between Byleth and Seteth (Cichol) and Flayn (Cethleann), though I suspect that those two are actually 2nd and 3rd generation "children" of the Goddess, rather than 1st gen, as Rhea is. I don't see Byleth being terribly interested in glory, or proclaiming her omniscience and omnipotence, once Byleth and Sothis merge and she fully recognizes what she is. She'd still be humble and compassionate, because not only are gods as flawed as their creations, but gods also have their place, and it can be challenged. After all, it's happened once before, which is why she had to be reincarnated in the first place. That's plenty enough reason for humility. Once events have stabilized, I can see Byleth remaining a teacher, with nobody but a few truly aware of whom and what she really is. Just hiding in plain sight, helping where and when it it necessary. Sometimes she'd serve as a diplomat, neutral mediator, or an advisor to kings (who were all once her students, of course). Decades later, they'd still fondly call her "Professor," but marvel at how she doesn't seem to have aged a day (Nor have Rhea, Seteth or Flayn, for that matter, if they've stuck around). I don't see her denying what who/she is, other than by way of evasion, but I can't really see her just announcing it outright either. They'd feel the Goddess's presence, and probably attribute it to Byleth supposedly being the Goddess's messenger, as some have said, but they'd be unaware that the goddess is actually standing right in front of them. Some people might figure it out on their own, likely if they can sense power levels, or during a rare display of her power, such as killing a rare and powerful monster with seemingly little effort, or regenerating a scarred landscape with fields of grass and flowers (obviously, her powers would continue developing). The other "Children of the Goddess," such as "The Immovable" in Leone's paralogue can sense and recognize her right away of course (interesting and funny dialogue in that mission if you bring Seteth and Flayn along and have them talk to The Immovable). The more powerful Agarthans were able to recognize Byleth as Sothis (the "Fell Star"), but I suspect that's because they remember her from the first time around. Other than that, a mage who happens to be sensitive to power levels (or maybe somebody with a "magic lens" type device) might look at Lady Rhea and see a hidden power level equivalent to a mythical dragon, perhaps even deducing that she IS a dragon, but looking directly at Byleth with it would be like standing next to a star. Then after they recover from blinding themselves with their "magic sight" (or from the magic lens overload in their face), Byleth would just smile playfully, asking them not to tell anybody. Then Byleth would casually walk away as they recover from their shock, having just pieced together just who they were in contact with, and that this person is MORE than just the alleged "Goddess's Messenger." Not revealing who and what she is makes sense, because it's much easier for people to approach her in confidence if everybody just thinks of her as "the Professor," instead of "the Goddess." By the end game, the students practically worship her anyways (Claude comments on that in the Golden Deer route), but it's hard to get anything done if people are either constantly fawning over you, or deathly afraid of you. This is all just my own head-canon though. I imagine they left things vague like this so that you could fill in your own story. The writers at Nintendo tend to do that.

For me, personally, Robin is still my favorite version of "myself" in these games. Robin's personality was generic enough to work for a lot of people, but interesting and tactical enough to have a lot of cool or interesting supports. They were also consistently portrayed as intelligent. Obviously, I may not be able to measure up to Robin's hyper-competence in real life, but I can honestly say that Robin makes for a good IDEALIZED version of myself. Byleth had some moments where his decisions were too different from what mine would have been, and poor Corrin just makes me groan inside sometimes. My biggest disconnect with Byleth is the part where he rushes right into an obvious trap and basically loses Sothis as a result. I feel like for a tactician who regularly has other people's lives depending on him, having lost someone close to him (his father) should have only motivated him even more to NOT fall into his enemy's next trap. I knew almost certainly that I wouldn't be able to change the outcome, but I remember that the first time I played that stage, I intentionally made sure that Byleth didn't get ahead of the rest of my crew, but the cutscene completely took the characters out of the situation that I had set up. And as a result, we lost Sothis. (But not before she berates Byleth for his obvious mistake). I think Byleth coming back from the place he was banished to was supposed to be triumphant, but I was just too hurt by somehow managing to lose the progenitor Goddess. Outside of the 4th wall, I was much more hurt by that than I was by losing Jeralt. Anyways, the unavoidability of that part I didn't like kind of made me lose a lot of connection with Byleth, the player avatar.

I did the same thing but I took it more lightly considering I had a feeling she would comeback somehow given how she was speaking at the time. What I did have a problem with was how they did it. Whole heatedly agree I was upset they had him charge into that trap when I specifically played out the round so that he wouldn't be in it. It would be one thing if we were for whatever reason dragged into the trap, like we needed to save someone or something and heroically dive in knowing what would happen, but no, we have him foolishly charge into it by himself.

Lawlietftw30 Another huge disconnect for me is the lack of abusing Divine Pulse at key moments in the story. They should have kept divine pulse as a gameplay mechanic only because it breaks the immersion pretty hard when its used once but never again
@blues03
@blues03 4 года назад
@@cosmicmist2020 I had an idea that "what if" you could press a button to use a Divine Pulse during a cutscene just to see how it changes the story, map, or enemies. The caveat being Light Green Haired Byleth only gets a certain amount of charges for cutscene Divine Pulse charges because he isn't used to the power and doesn't know how to draw more out. Or even Vice Versa, one DP charge per cutscene Pre-Light Green Hair (Sothis is OP) ONLY. That way, up until the war begins we can see all that we can change. Also, I believe the "failed" DP cutscene made Byleth just accept whatever could happen without using the power anymore (outside of gameplay).

It's weird but when I like a character I like to see them go through hell and then come out on the top (like Dimitri). Other than his father dying, nothing bad exactly happens to Byleth. Another "choice" dialogue that frustrated me was when they literally gave me just 1 option. As someone who's too used to bioware levels of rpg games, it felt like a pointless mechanic. Like what else am I supposed to pick? I'm always limited to either 3 to 1 options of dialogue with no follow up questions or even consequences for my actions. Also about Byleth's emotionless and overall withdrawn personality could've been so much more interesting to explore. The most we got were diary entries about how we didn't cry as a baby or even make a sound and never did????? How freakin interesting of an inner conflict could that be? Byleth could've passed on wisdom as a 3rd party perspective due to their mercenary background and experiences while the students taught them to be more open and made Byleth feel emotions for once because they actually found a home to live in. The monastery was the longest place they stayed in and it was actually full of people Byleths age and the students weren't bloodthirsty savages that Byleth was most likely used to being around and how they stayed on guard 24/7. When they lose their dad, make them mourn and go ham on the angst. Don't hold back since you built a foundation of basic emotios first with the students and let it all come flooding when he dies. Let the students comfort their professor when Byleth chooses to skip classes and confine themselves in their room reading those diary entries. Let them comfort Byleth in their own unique ways and grow a deeper and personal bond with each of them. And then destroy this loving relationship Byleth has established with their students with the time skip. Make them feel something for a change. Anger, frustration, sadness, confusion, and denial. Make them lose that cool persona and pull the rug from under Byleth. Make this seemingly powerful mentor lose their footing in a war torn world and then make them stand up and try again. Byleth should have an epic reappearance after 5 years of disappearing and make their reappearance shake the 3 sides of war shake with both fear and surprise. DO SOMETHING. But I guess that's asking for too much idk :/

You make an interesting idea on how to solve "showing" Byleth being more expressive rather than it being "told" to us. I like it. I think another example of the problem with the dialogue options is when Dimitri uses Byleth wanting to kill Kronya as an excuse for his edgy behavior. There could've been a dialogue option where Byleth counters that when they were grieving over their father's death (another element of the character that should've been much more fleshed out) it was Dimitri that helped cheer them up and that none of their students gave up on them as a "lost cause". But instead there's...nothing. The game had the opportunity for Byleth to make a good point but just didn't take it. I actually believe that there could've been room for Byleth to have enough of a backstory to have the "give and take" that most of the supports have. A popular plot seen in fanworks is Byleth meeting any of the three lords (especially Dimitri and Claude) as a child due to their upbringing as a wandering mercenary, and while I don't particularly like this idea, it does show that there is potential to flesh out Byleth's backstory. One example that comes to mind for me is how the game barely touches on Byleth being the Creepy Child trope, where they never cried or smiled even as a baby. There's actually a lot of potential conflict there, with supporting characters finding Byleth to be unnerving despite them always being able to feel emotion but never able to express it (or at least that's how I interpreted what they were going for with Byleth).

Wil E I don’t dislike Byleth...I think the execution was done poorly. Awakening’s Avatar, despite their relevance to the plot, was always presented as a secondary character to Chrom...which is why most don’t have a problem with them. Fate’s Avatar was too prevalent to the plot to the game which made the other characters in story inconsistent depending on the story you choose. They’re literally forced down your throat and the story suffers because of it. Three House’s Avatar is kind of a mixed bag as Byleth is both too prevalent AND secondary to the plot and they lack a real characterization because of it, so the reception is generally neutral

Wil E I think you just misunderstand my point. I prefer Robin because of how they presented. They have personality, history, purpose, and don’t serve as this figure who’s importance is hamfisted to the point that everyone sees them as the solution to every problem. The dialogue choices is a GREAT idea, it’s just that in the direction the creators took the game they subtracted things in favor of choice...a limited range of choice that the video pointed out. Like a voice for one. If the game had more time it could’ve been something like Mass Effect, but Byleth’s character is done in a way that is the most neutral of all of the Avatar’s in the series
@0ctopusComp1etely

I will argue that I actually noticed Byleth's increase in emotional responses, but that's only because I was actively paying trying to roleplay an indifferent mercenary that would slowly grow more fond of the cast as I spent time with them (which just so happened to be Byleth's exact character, so that worked out well). Byleth doesn't actually smile until several months into the story, or really show any form of facial change at all. I do completely agree with everything else, though. The dialogue choices either don't convey the emotional growth, or flat-out counteract it (joking about being a ghost after almost dying doesn't exactly sound emotionless to me). The writing could have used a lot of work in making Byleth's growth more pronounced, and to make them seem like an actually competent teacher. This is also a purely personal gripe, but I feel like Byleth doesn't really feel as competent as they should given all the praise the game gives them, and I don't just mean as a teacher. One of the first things Byleth does is almost take an axe to the skull, gets time rewound for them for sucking (after potentially annoying the being that can help them), and then blocks the axe normally the way they should have the first time. The in-universe characters may just see Byleth being a competent fighter, but as the player I saw my character make a huge mistake. Then later Byleth falls for what should have been an obvious trap... and Sothis is the one that bails them out again, this time at much greater cost. And that's not even taking into account when your decisions don't actually impact the story. Byleth honestly just... doesn't impress me much, beyond my own decisions for the students' growths.

The main issue with Byleth is that you are forced to play as an emotionless "character" with no personality in a game with supporting characters that have plenty of personality and agency to the game-world. Taking a gag from Zero Punctuation, I look at characters like the Three House leaders and I'm like 'hey I got an idea, how about I play one of them? I want to re-roll my character; one that didn't get snake-eyes for charisma.' I'm sick to death of "characters" that are made abundantly clear that they're yet another instance of the writers wanting to have their cake and eat it too by creating a "character" that's supposed to have a distinct personality and agency to the main plot but they didn't want to alienate the players that want to insert themselves in the story so they make them a blank slate but they don't provide the tools necessary to make them truly modular to make them feel like you.

The ironic thing about the first dialogue choice in the game is that they're all correct in certain ways, yet the game only lets you pick one. "Ghost," "demon," and "mortal" are all accurate descriptions of Byleth at the beginning of the game. The other funny thing is that, in most endings, mortal is the least accurate description of Byleth out of the three.

While I do think they could’ve gone the extra mile with Byleth’s character in FE Three Houses as well as nailed the execution better, especially with how interesting their background is, at the end of the day I do still think they fulfill their role well as both an avatar and in the game’s story rather well. Really, I think the only FE avatar that’s had good characterization is Robin, and that’s mainly because they share the spotlight with Chrom. So basically, Byleth’s not a good character, but still a pretty good avatar. Especially when compared to Corrin, though I could see why some who expected more from them would’ve been left dissatisfied. Overall though, I do still quite enjoy this video as a possible “what-if,” even if I’m still personally satisfied with the overall result we got from our Ashen Demon.

The VG show I agree to an extent, since while Byleth is the driving force of the narrative, it doesn’t really revolve around them all that much, since Edelgard is ultimately the one who sets things in motion. Or at least to the same extent as with Corrin.

My problem with Robin and Corrin is that not everybody can identify with them because of the fact that they have their own personality defeating the point of them being avatars to begin with. That's what I liked about the FE7 avatar. They just serve to insert the player in the game and establish that we're the tactician during the gameplay while not interfering with the plot.
@amirgarcia547
@amirgarcia547 4 года назад
Denickart With Corrin I would agree, since despite Fates’s biggest theme being making your own choices, Corrin constantly makes their own choices despite what the player’s own morals or perspective will be due to how heavily the story revolves around them. This’s best exemplified in the chapter in Conquest where you’re ordered to kill the Rainbow Sage, since despite what decision the player makes (to kill or spare them), Corrin will still refuse and the Rainbow Sage will instead die by natural causes. But with Robin, while he has a defined personality, since he’s not the main focus of the story, and is instead only a tactician just like the player is, I’d say the players able to step into his shoes a lot more easily. If anything I’d say Mark from FE7 is the *worst* example of an FE avatar, since it feels like they were added in at the last minute due to how disconnected they are from the game, and we wouldn’t really have any indication that they even existed if the characters didn’t occasionally stop to acknowledge them. Hell, I’d say Kiran from FE Heroes is a better avatar than Mark, since despite having no dialogue, they at least feel like they’re actually in the story, with there even being one part where a villain comes close to killing them.
@thevgshow2723
@thevgshow2723 4 года назад
@@denickart Not really Robin liked tactics and Corrin's entire personality could be summed up as a good person which is not much so a lot of the personality is just what you imprint off on them. The FE7 avatar didn't have any personality at all and had little to no plot involvment in which case whe even be there if they don't matter Robin, Corrin and Byleth all give you a prescence in the story with just enough of a personality to be dynamic in the story at least in the case of Robin and Byleth who are important and feel like they are to ane extent me kind of like Shepard in Mass Effect

Now that I think about it though, the only part of this video where I slightly disagree is the support portion, since while a student-mentor relationship with Byleth and Bernadetta would’ve been a lot more interesting and gave Byleth some much-needed characterization, one of the reasons why I find Byleth’s supports with Bernadetta to be one of her best supports is that it’s one of if not the only ones to really delve into her background and give some insight onto why she acts the way she does. That, and along with Alois, Byleth is one of the only characters that Bernie feels fully comfortable around before the timeskip, which’s partially due to the fact that their subdued personality keeps her from feeling intimidated by them. She’s never really had an older figure in her life that she can fully look up to, but with Byleth supporting her rather than putting her down, it motivates her to succeed and do better, which’s another reason I enjoyed their supports as far as building Bernie’s character goes. An example I would’ve personally used are Byleth’s C and B supports with Leonie, which are straight-up AWFUL. Not just because it boils down to a measuring contest of Leonie being like “you don’t respect your dad as much as I do!!!!,” but because it feels like Byleth is just standing there and taking it. It would’ve been a lot more interesting if Byleth reprimanded her for her childish behavior and flexed their professorship a bit more by telling her that this isn’t the appropriate way to address a teacher. That way, it’d give Leonie ample time to reflect on her behavior and apologize in her B-support while they both reflect on Jeralt’s death. Rather than just doing the same thing as in her C-support, but even worse due to it’s timing. But alas...like Byleth, Leonie is another character I feel like had wasted potential, especially since their dynamic of who cared more about Jeralt *could* have been more interesting if it didn’t feel so grossly one-sided. But like I said in my other comment, I still enjoyed this video quite a lot regardless.👌🏽

I think that he was implying that Bernie was fine with Byleth unlike the other characters (besides Aloise) because of waifu culture. You could say the same for Marriane and Edelgard with how they are obsesed with Byleth. Sylvain and Dorothea don't count since they flert with everything that moves. It's mostly how in the modern FE days everyone whose not the villain must like the avatar a disturbing amount and sometimes even married men and women havw nothing against getting super close with someone much younger than them (Alois and Gilbert). The only character that has gotten away with this is Tharja since her obsession is portrayed as unhealthy, but she has other issues. Also while it is nice to get backstory it can be done badly, like how Rutger from FE6 decides to dump his entire backstory on a guy he barely knows, despite being only able to share his story before with his former clan leader. It's nice to get to know a character, but it must be done well. I agree that the Byleth x Leonie support is bad
@amirgarcia547
@amirgarcia547 4 года назад
Vanja Galović I’m...not exactly sure Boofire was implying that *at all,* and if by some small chance he was, I would have to wholly disagree. If it were Fates, then I would agree, since everyone treats Corrin as this holy messiah that can do nothing wrong despite them making *countless* questionable decisions and the game as a whole was filled to the brim with fanservice. But not only does Three Houses have barely if any fanservice, but I’d say it’s a lot more natural for the characters to feel drawn to Byleth. I mean, not only are they this mercenary with a mysterious past who became their teacher out of nowhere, already making them quite compelling, but they’re their professor as well. Meaning that they pretty much engage with them in a daily basis for lectures, monastery activities, auxiliary battles and missions. So since this already gives Byleth a pre-established relationship with the characters, it makes the bond they developed with them to feel more natural, rather than random units being drawn to Corrin despite practically having no interactions with them prior. And with Alois and Gilbert, the largest relationship you can have with them is a strictly platonic one, so I’d say they fit the bill of what you’re describing even less. And while backstory-dumps can be bad if executed poorly, I wouldn’t say that’s the case for Bernie, since she already clearly trusted Byleth both for the reasons stated in my OG comment as well as this one. I’d say it’s done well not only due to this, but rather than just being thrown in there for the sake of doing so, it’s specifically meant to change one’s perspective on Bernadetta as a character if they could get past the repetition of her C-supports, since it grants some necessary insight on her behavior and quirks that were previously unknown.

@@amirgarcia547 I can understand that the WAIFU-ism isn't nearely as bad as it was in Fates, but it still does somewhat persist with how Edelgard unlike Claude or Dimitri is really into Byleth (I get that he/she saved her life, but still) and unlike the other 2 main lords, El can romance both genders. It's just a bit suspicious And while I understand that the teacher/student role makes the characters being comfortable with giving their backstories to Byleth it can be a little too extreme. I wouldn't say that Bernie is tpo bad in that regard, but even adults like Shamir have no problem goving their life story to Byleth (yes I do understand that Byleth reminded her of her partner, but still) Not to mention how all of them are ready to die by your side even if they've known you for less than a year and are even ready to betray their countryes, familles and friends just because they like Byleth soooo much (besides Dedue and Hubert) I think a good demonstration of Byleth's MC powers is how Gilbert even after talking to his daughter extensively, he still can't send his wife his letters abd Annete has to send them for him, showing how he still hasn't gotten over his guilt. In his Byleth support at B he's pretty much over his trauma and at A he says that he would like to invite his wife to visit him at the monastery. He also has a weirdly close relationship with Byleth in her S support, but let's say that's completely platonic. It just shows that unlike the three lords and Rhea Byleth just doesn't have comparable flaws. Heck the only person who doesn't instantly like Byleth is Seteth and the villains of the story.

I enjoyed watching this and seeing you point out the ways the game fails to show the core aspects of Byleth’s character. He’s become one of my absolute favorites in the game, not because of what the game delivered but the potential Byleth had. There are many themes and ideas to explore with him, and I think that maybe because the writing team was indecisive about what to make of Byleth (making him his own character with his own struggles or just a full on blank slate who doesn’t take the focus away from the Lords/Church) I feel like his character suffered a lot for it. But the themes of Religion, war, guilt over taking lives either in the war or in his life as a mercenary, lack of emotion, struggles with newfound emotions, what he considers to be strength, his bonds with other people, his attachment to his students and wanting them to survive the war yet being sad about how jaded most of them become, struggling with the reason he was “created”, being an experiment in a way, not being fully human, giving him more conversations (supports!!! He deserved them) with Jeralt where he expressed his own emotions and doubts and maybe questions Jeralt about the lies Jeralt told him (like his Birthday for example), having him question or challenge the views and methods of the house leaders before and after timeskip because he was in the position to do so, maybe even show him struggle with gender (as he shares such a connection to a goddess) or showing him react in some way to not having a heartbeat (or really “heart” in general) are all examples of struggles or themes they could have used to give byleth growth. I enjoy exploring the different troubles byleth could have (horrible in a way, I know but I like to do this with my favorite characters) and it makes me sad to see how none of these options were used, and that he ended up the way he did.

I feel like you have to roleplay a bit when it comes to an avatar character to get the most out of it. For example, Byleth is a hardened mercenary that only cared about survival, lacked emotions and would forget most day to day events since they had nothing to do with survival, that after teaching at Garreg Mach she learned to loosen up, develop her emotions and enjoy life. You can play around this "character sheet", if you will. Whenever it's not explicitly stated, you can make your own reaction to an event, as long as it feels in character. Plus there are a lot of elements in the game that can give Byleth her own character arc: the supports with her class can teach/allow her to express her emotions, the ones with the faculty can help her learn more about herself and Jeralt, her not knowing next to nothing about herself, not even her own age, and most of the information she receives clashing heads can give her an identity crisis, the events in the game (Milkan turning, the Remire village incident, Rhea's ruthlessness) can take the toll on her mentally, Jeralt not being straight with her and something always interrupting them adding onto this frustration and exhaustion, with the only way of relieving stress being interacting with her class (as well as developing feelings for one of the characters during the ball moon), all this culminating with Jeralt's death, whom she couldn't save, and essentially becoming a broken mess she only got out off thanks to her class and reading Jeralt's diary, which shone light on some things and made sense of others (as well as exacting revenge of his killer, but that's besides the point). Afterwards, with war breaking out, and her disappearing for 5 years, it's her turn to help her students (particularly the house leader) like they did in the past. (I used her cause female Byleth was my first playthrough)

I find your take and how to do Byleth's supports the most insightful. I feel safe saying that the reason why many hate Avatar characters being in Fire Emblem, is because they're rarely a character. Robin from fates seems to have been the only time that they succeeded in giving an Avatar a fulfilling character. Meanwhile the older games all do a pretty good job with focusing on a young lord as the main character of their story. I'd vote "Path of Radiance" coming of age story as possibly being the best executed story in the series.

still, it's not impossible to make an avatar character a bit interesting. Take joker from persona 5 for example. from the get go you realise he has his own definition and sense of justice and is willing to risk his life to save people (hence he ended up on probation) on top of this, his dialogue isn't that of a blank slate, and honestly, some of his dialogue can be pretty darn hilarious, too. And even though he appears a blank slate at first, you begin to see growth in him - and, through the metaverse, you realise he's way more of a cocky character than the game initially suggests of him. The fact that Joker is more of an advisor to his confidants in his game than byleth is to his students is truly a waste of a potentially good avatar. Nintendo definitely took notes from persona when making this game, but in regard to the main character themselves I wish they would've taken more notes - it's not like joker is the only interesting main character the persona series has given us, even the others before him were pretty interesting.

For example: "I am a ghost" could increase magic and resistance growths with a more floaty animation set and more mage focused Enlighted One "I am a demon" could increase strength and speed growths with a more stylistic animation set and weapon focused Enlightened One "I am a mortal" could increase health and luck, using the same animations currently used along with a balanced Enlightened One An idea that could have further increased the customisability of the game

This always frustrated me. I feel like they didn’t get how much potential for personality you can can get from a “silent protagonist.” Byleth was too much of a clean slate to ever work from other than in your imagination. So my number 1 favourite game that fits into this genre is Dragon Age: Origins. It’s also my favourite game ever but that’s a whole other rant. I love how you had a selection of backstories that were complete enough to give you a frame to work around but weren’t restrictive and then having 5+ dialogue options in conversations and those options actually mattering - made your Grey Warden so individual and made me get so invested. It’s frustrating as Byleth comes with just the right amount of backstory. She’s talented but under-socialised. Which gives her the potential to have any kind of personality when she comes out of her shell (as long as it’d make her a good teacher of course). Blue Lions is my favourite route too, my Byleth was okay to go with Dimitri’s plan - purely because (in my mind) she knew him well enough to know that at that time going against him would not be of benefit. But there’s no way to convey that because we had 2 stilted dialogue options that meant nothing 😭. I also would have LOVED to see some actual teaching in the supports too! Thanks for making this! ✨

Also, Its mentioned in the video a few times that w/out the characters saying that Byleth had changed you wouldnt have noticed, but I disagree, I noticed. I felt that subtle change over my many many hours played. Byleth is at his best when he is a listener who gives heartfelt feedback, or so it felt to me. Another part that feels underdeveloped is the part about them being a mercenary camp child kind of like guts. That would have been a nice angle to explore an oddball character which fits how a lot of players prefer to play in RPGs. Seeing how they interact now that they’re surrounded by nobles, scholars, and various ecclesiarchs who wouldn’t really be prepared for it. Feels like that should have been there since byleths whole reason for being at Garreg Mach was for their mercenary talents to begin with aside from tagging along with their dad.

I think Byleth could’ve been a great character had they were given a route all on their own, not Silver Snow, but have them be proactive in trying to stop the war and save their students in their own way. Maybe it could be a route in which Byleth is actually allow to have voice acting.

So the main problems are these from what I understood: •Lack of speech and action freedom •The game keeps telling you stuff about him/her but doesn't actually show it. •Lack of characterization •Non-existent character development The following is subjective from what I have seen about FE3H even though I haven't played the game yet: Being able to S support anyone, and I mean ANYONE, regardless of the gender you chose, so you have more freedom.
@V-Jes

On the S support part there's only few characters you can S rank no matter the gender while for everyone else you need to be the opposite but everything else is spot on besides forgetting the part Byleth gets constant praise for literally doing nothing special even right after the tutorial mission where you control the 3 lords and even have your dad assisting you...

Robin is still the best for me. Hands down Edit: and after watching the video my opinion has been reinforced. I may have my nostalgia goggles on but I remember robin as someone who carried weight in what he said. He was well respected by everyone, even his enemies. And the memory is vague, but I do think he also played in active role in helping people in his support conversations.

One thing I do hate so much in games with choices paired with a mute player character, is when the choices are waste of time and have no impact at all ( unless it's a joke option with unique responses ) and are just there so that you can pick up the oblivious right option. Why would even have them in there if path in the end is linear?

I wish demon, ghost, and human option affected more... like... imagine if you got affection points with edelgard, dimitri, and Claude (in that choice order) I also kind of wish the dialogue choices were a bit more stylized to fit byleth’s personality. More blunt/options of few words. Could’ve been funny if every choice had “...” as an option like a tell tale game

Wondering how Boo feels about the final and major bit of 3H DLC that just got announced. I'm personally really disappointed by that, instead of giving us a "Torna of 3H"-esque mini expasion and explain some of the unexplained, they decided to just sell some new edgy characters.

I think something that could have also added to the progression is making the tutorial be a mission where instead of u saving the three main characters and being semi-deified, having ur mercenary band be overwhelmed slowly and being saved by some knights of sieros including alois and his unresponded jokes. After that it could kinda play out the same, but now saving edelgarde with sacrafice feeling more right, and alois maybe asking if he's seen u before interrupting himself by seeing jeralt

To be honest at least Corrin had charisma, I have no idea why everyone but Seteth loves this self-insert, Byleth as a character is kinda boring in my opinion, perfect at everything and worst of all are the catalyst for Edelgard and Dimitri's development, my issue with is with Dimitri's development, it would've been so much cooler if everyone contributed instead of just leaving it to Rodrigue to die and Byleth to just pick the right dialogue option. If I'm forced to deal with Avatars I'd prefer a Robin situation, the dialogue options need a lot of work if they bring them back, I like the idea of each dialogue option giving them more of a personality.
@V-Jes
@V-Jes 4 года назад
Tho to be fair Robin also has the same dialog issue at times where the game makes the player choose and it literally changes nothing with the only exception being after you beat the final boss where it pretty much just asks if you want to choose the good obviously canon ending or the not good ending.
@shadedhydra6674
@shadedhydra6674 4 года назад
V-jes It does but throughout the rest of the game there are no choices and Robin acts like an actual character, those choices that don’t mean nothing don’t necessarily take away from the narrative since there aren’t many of them in comparison to Three Houses where they’re everywhere, it doesn’t take away from 3H’s overall narrative either but it’s harder to ignore them. And like I said Corrin and especially Robin have more personality than Byleth.

I'm honestly tired of the self-insert rpg character, and this time it was barely even that with Byleth. I just want them to return to making interesting main character lords like Ike, Marth and Roy. In addition to the lords like Edelgard, Dimitri and Cluade, who act as your best buddies in the game. In summary a fleshed out character that they aren't afraid to give a voice, defined emotions and characteristics in fear of ruining the players self-insert.
@constrainedanacronysm1370
@constrainedanacronysm1370 4 года назад
@Wil E I might agree with you on the immersion and arbitrary obfuscation of the characters past, if it weren't for the fact that Fire Emblem does exactly that. Each of the Avatars has a vague backstory, even if they don't have that much of a character. Without getting too much into spoilers... Robin's lineage and upbringing are both extremely important to the Avatar's "arc" and these details are obfuscated until the 11th hour. Corrin's lineage and past are both extremely important to the Avatar's "Arc" but they are constantly changing and their true heritage is obfuscated until you buy an extremely bad dlc. Byleth's Mercenary past is almost entirely obfuscated and we aren't shown or told anything about it beyond that in Tea Time conversations and the first mission. They are extremely selective in what they show and tell you. Furthermore Byleth's heritage and origins which are important to the Avatar's "Arc" are obfuscated or left entirely unknown depending on which route you choose. I really don't see the value in Avatars over defined characters in Fire Emblem. The obfuscation of important details of the "character" is the same or worse than that used with fleshed out lords. And I totally disagree that route splits can't be done with fleshed out characters. Both Deux Ex and the Witcher series have done very good storylines with fleshed-out characters and route-splits. And thank you, I do disagree, and you can disagree with me too if you want. I'll still respect your opinion, and I won't verbally judge it to be objectively stupid or not! It's a wonderful world!

@Wil E The problem with the BK (not the geneology one) is that he's a different character in POR and RD. In POR he's a rival to Ike that unlike Ike is ready to do anything just to have a satisfying fight and even threatens to kill a 10 year old to achieve his goals. While in RD he's this flawed and simphatetic antagonist with a strict moral code. Both characters work in their own ways, but trying to make them into a single character is problematic. Also I really dislike Robin, I know a lot of people like him/her, but I don't. Robin gets a lot of atention and a super important backstory that makes him/her the most important character in the game. Really the avatars shouldn't be soooo important to the story since they take atention away from the lords or other characters (Kris takes away Jagens character). Suprisingly enough FE7's Mark does this the best since it gives you the option to play with or without him/her. Also while I agree that Shepard is a self insert character, I can't see how Geralt is one. He was a book character first and even with dialogue choices he's still his own character, I really don't see how he would be a self insert character like Byleth or Shepard My main problem with self insert characters is that other characters like (for example Persona 5 Futaba) only complete their character arcs because of the avatar and often need to have an unnatural conclusion because of avatar worship (Gilbert after talking to his daughter is only partly able to face his wife, but after talking to Byleth gets over his issues instantly, lol). So if FE stops doing avatars I would have no problem with it.

I personally don’t agree with the camp of people that say Byleth shouldn’t be in the game, but I also don’t see the point in having Byleth be an avatar character. I guess this applies to most of the avatars, the sole exception being Kris from New Mystery because I think the idea of Marth’s nameless tactician who history forgot is a brilliant way to both retcon them in, and allow the player to do/be whatever. Plus it’s kinda cool how in lore all the credit goes to Marth but in reality he could have never done it without you, the player, represented by Kris. The more I look at it the less I understand having Robin and Corrin be avatar characters. Both are clearly their own characters, and the fact that they have near exclusive access to unique classes makes me feel guilty about making them a class that better suits me. This applies to Byleth too, giving the player a class only they can be just makes them feel like if they’re not making that character that class, they’re wasting something. Looking back, the main reason I accepted them as avatars was because I could customize their appearance and names. With Three Houses removing custom appearances, and the voice acting necessitating they almost always refer to Byleth by something you didn’t decide, it really makes me question why they couldn’t just be, their own character.

The weirdest thing about Byleth for me is that he's literally supposed to have the power of a god, or at least a fraction of it, but we never see him do anything amazing with it besides cut that hole through the dimensions and reversing time. Sure, he's more powerful than most warriors, but he never physically does anything that lives up to his godlike status. There were plenty of opportunities where you could show him displaying his power without him breaking the story. For example, instead of him just getting pushed off a cliff and falling asleep for 5 years during the time skip, have him lose control of his power and basically create a massive earthquake/explosion, wiping out a large fraction of the Empire/Church's forces but destroying the ground he was standing on, sending him over the edge that way. This would give a better explanation for him falling asleep for 5 years, because he exhausted his power. This would also give a reason why he doesn't pull those kinds of stunts too often in the story going forward. Other examples of small displays of power could be him forcefully blasting down the gate to Fort Merceus, or if you really wanted to push it, have an epic scene of him blocking one of TWSITD's magic nukes head on, similar to how Rhea did.

What I did not like is that there was no explanation to what the hell happened to Byleth when he fell to the ravine and disappeared for 5 years to then just appear in a river close to the monastery. They could have invested some time to at least show he got into a cryostasis time cocoon to save his ass from the fall and while everybody lived 5 years he passed out 1 minute from using that power, I like these kind of silly explanations.

Valid points, but here's the thing what if the routes aren't specific timelines... but scenarios of what may or will happen if chosen with out adjustment. We as players are just dragged along by our chosen lord or lady's desire and can't contest any thing, as if it was a pre-recorded film. With the lions u kill Arendale and Cornelia, but forget about the guy who blocked the way to protecting Jeralt thus leave him to scheme for another day, with the storm and deer u clear the snake pit, but leave the enablers alive. and with the flower bed u don't get to see the end game. As u said this game is a proper example of the "unreliable narrator" and right now it doesn't seem to have come to a conclusive end (so what if it applies to byleth as well). On another note when do u think the recording process/data compiling started, for me it was the second byleth relaxed they're finely toned buns on sothis's throne, and who said he/ she had to go back to square one mentally (to an extent) and emotionally to do so!? Next we have jerlats diary, the mothers engagement ring, are they're more secrets in the captain quarters or more info to be gained via divine intervention? Finally we get the culmination....

Man I wish the story had more time to flesh out Byleth and his past. I really did like Byleth as a blank slate for the player to put themselves in, but at the same time I really wish I knew more about the guy other than being a mercenary who rarely had any human interaction other than his father who we barely know much about. Maybe one day we’ll get a remake or some type of lore about the character

It would have been nice, speaking for myself, if Byleth's romance options were limited to the non-students and improved upon, because, even with the timeskip, the idea of being able to romance any of the students from Garrag Mach when you are ostensibly a teacher, makes me very uncomfortable. Power dynamics being the big point here that we can't really ignore. That's why I'm in the 'Byleth was unnecessary' camp.
