We make homemade fire starters from pine cones. It's simple, and makes lighting whether it's in a wood-burning stove or a campfire an easy job. A nice gift idea that we have used many times is also there. We collect the cones ourselves, dry them, and dip them in a melted fat mixture of hard wax from candle residue and lamb fat. (But it is probably perfectly fine to use other types of hard fat and wax, such as beeswax, for example)
