What’s interesting is how the suit changes despite this being an obvious bug. This means there is no sprite for fire Mario in the original game. When you get the fire flower the game just applies a palette swap to change the color of the pixels on the original sprite. Instead of memory, they use processing power. This is why when you shoot the fireball you can actually see the grown up sprite. Because that’s the only sprite that doesn’t exist for the base Mario. Is the only one actually stored in memory.
A (hopefully) quick breakdown of this glitch: The two power ups have two functions when collected; they give you +1 hp, and then apply a change to a particular Boolean function in the code, either ‘ON’ or ‘OFF’ The Mushroom also has another function tied to its collection in that it changes the other Mushrooms into Fire Flowers, then changes it back once you reach 1 hp again (note: this is important in performing the glitch) The two states for the Mushroom change the sprites for Mario, he can be either big or small, and the Mushroom will flip that state whenever it’s collected On the other end: the Fire Flower changes the _palette_ for Mario from red and blue to red and white, but it also allows access to the Firing sprite that Mario uses when using fireballs while in the ‘ON’ state That particular sprite is meant to only be used when Mario is large, hence the sprite shift when Mini Fire Mario launches a fireball The large/small state also determine whether Mario can break blocks or not, hence why you can’t break blocks as Mini Fire Mario As for the glitch itself, when you take damage at 2 hp the game first updates your hp (which changes the Fire Flowers back to Mushrooms), then uses a particular animation for a few frames, before changing the Mushroom state back to ‘OFF’, which can be interrupted by collecting the Axe at the end of bowsers stage since it has its own animation and takes precedence over the damage animation That causes Mario to be stuck in the large state at the beginning of the next level while having 1 hp, which changes the Mushrooms back, which then allows for Mini Fire Mario to exist I hope I explained that well, I’m not the most knowledgeable on these subjects, but I have studied this topic before
@@cosmic_love_5 - You will have 3 HP as Small Fire Mario. Due to the glitch, you still have 2 HP (as shown by being Super Mario), but the game thinks you're Small Mario with 1 HP, hence the mushroom will appear first. Collecting flips your state from big to small, giving you 3 HP, and the fire flower just swaps your palette.
While small (even with fire) you can't break bricks. Taking damage while small makes you big. Taking damage while big kills you. The glitch ends on death.
There are two rumors I remember this one, trident, succeeded, and that you can jump over the flagpole, I tried all kind of crazy jump runs upstairs to do it was never able and according to what I see on RU-vid it's not possible
People might say "Well, this must mean Mario was meant to be small with fireballs" but that's not true. The sprite's colors are all based on the value that's drawn from an entity. And it explains Luigi in 2 player mode. You're not switching characters, it's the exact same sprite. But the values are changed. And in this instance, Mario is supposed to be hit, but since a cutscene is playing, he has to be in the state he was when he hit the axe. But it bugs the game out and thinks Mario is small. And with that, when Mario gets a flower, the game checks and switches his colors.
But the power up changes to fireball plant once you already have a giant mushroom, it doesn't make you small until or unless you get hit by any difficulty 🍄
I had an older cousin who was the only one around who could pull off this trick back in the old days. (Not sure why it seemed so complicated back then.).
Actually you can just do the first step with firepower already. I did this once by accident and have never been able to do it again. The precision is insane.
Whats even crazier is that you can also do this while Mario is small and youll beat the level while dead. The timing is like frame perfect but it is possible
@@IrisGalaxis you have to be in the exact correct position, otherwise when you die Mario's sprite will just drop off the screen vertically like normal. You have to be just far enough so that Bowser still hits you but still triggers the screen panning right to the Toad. I remember being able to do it almost every time on an actual NES but for some reason it gives me way more trouble on the Switch Online version. Maybe "frame perfect" wasn't the best choice of words but the position of Mario's sprite is extremely specific.
@@michaeldebidart yes, more like pixel perfect maybe. The tehnique I use is I stand behind bowser, and then when he is very near Mario I jump and very lightly press right on the d-pad. Works most of the time for me.

I was a kid in the 90s, and found this out in only like '02, from the back of an old nes mario holographic card. I never meet people who are aware, and its rarely brought up online. The discovery amazed me, wondering how I'd never heard of it. It became a must when I played.
THIS A WEIRD EFFECT after Mario hits the Axe and Bowser I did’t see Mario walking towards Toad, when the video restarted again I was able to see Mario walking towards Toad 🫥😐🫥😐🫥 🍄 😮😳 WHO ELSE NOTICED THIS?!
Was i able to do speedruns and make it trhough the game without dying and in under 9 minutes wagering bets and i do not recall this small firepower ?! 😢. Did my time limit depend on whether to finish with higher amounts of lives collected and certain other tricks yet this is a slick trick id like to do if i could get my nes working ?! 👍👍👍
WARNING: Small Fire Mario will still be killed from a single hit, disregarding the color swap. As such, DO NOT TAKE DAMAGE. The flower will not absorb the attack and you will lose a life.
