A properly functioning apartment would have fire suppression systems and an alert system that was transmitted to every unit at the first sign of fire. But, I hear you.
This would have been terrifying for the people in those flats. Over 40 yrs ago I was on a balcony waiting for firemen too, my friend went onto the roof which was my ceiling. I couldn’t risk my then 3 yr old falling from there so we waited, most horrendous night of my life. To this day I’m very aware of fire risks. I hope all involved are ok.
Yep very much so, apparently the cladding was banned the year it was built, but because all plans and permits were accepted the year before it was able to go ahead... In this case these were actually very expensive flats with real wood floors etc.... It appears they went up inside quickly also 😢

Same cladding as on Grenfell Tower, polyurethane foam inside aluminium sheets. Did other countries not learn the lesson of Grenfell, and legislate replacement of this inflammable cladding on high-rise buildings? If so, then the government of Spain are at fault for not learning the lesson of the deaths of 72 people in London in 2017 in a fire just like this one.
I am a Spanish architect and it hurts me a lot to see these images, the current regulations in Spain do not allow the use of flammable materials as those seen in that fire in Valencia. The building was built prior to the implementation of the regulations in 2006, which is much stricter than the previous one and where the use of this type of materials was less frequent than those used today. Unfortunately safety regulations are based on the bad experiences of the past, progress has a price, a high price in this case. This type of façade actually had a good purpose, to better insulate the building to be more energy efficient, but perhaps the builder of the building, either out of ignorance or to save money, used lower quality materials. I wouldn't be surprised if they were imported materials from a certain place in Asia that I don't want to mention where they have a bad habit of forging European quality control seals. I am very sorry for the victims and I hope that at least it helps so that the technicians who make buildings can do better in the future.
@@nomecreona3829 In the UK, all the tall buildings with this type of cladding on are being refurbished and the cladding replaced with non-flammable materials. It's costly, but necessary to prevent future deaths. I hope Spain adopts the same approach.
@@jimparlett4099 I completely agree, the insulation of buildings with this type of façade built before the implementation of the current regulations that apply to newly built buildings should be replaced. But it will be difficult because the replacement will be very expensive for many building owners if there is not some type of state subsidy. I don't know if this is the case in the UK. (sorry if my English is not very good)

In the UK, the original builder is having to do the refurbishment if they are still in business, but if not the government is subsidising the cost. But it's taking a long time. Meanwhile, residents are stuck in limbo - they can't sell their apartments because of the fire hazard.
This is heartbreaking and a wake up call for both developers and real estate owners/renters/investors... Sprinklers save lives, alarms save lives, fireproof materials save lives... I suspect the exterior cladding was probably to blame for this one igniting like a roman candle... Praying at this hour for everyone affected by this needless tragedy...
You're either in Construction or Insurance. I was wondering the same thing, EIFS? I have to think with a 15 year old building of that height it was at least Fire Resistive, so it must've been the cladding or compartmentalization would've limited flame spread
Dont over estimate what srpinklers can do. Proper design, appropriate materials and adequate management trumps and sprinkler system. A few years ago I watch a significant blaze fully engulf an apartment on a tower block in Bristol. The fire was raging and coming out of the windows. It didn't spread. Concrete frame good fire compartment and no flammable materials draped aroind the building, likely a decent fire door. My fear is sprinklers are seen as a way to continue doing more bad design....
I am from Spain and the media indicate that the fire, in addition to the force of the wind, could have spread easily because the façade of the building had aluminium plates on the brick façade and the inside of these plates had a polyurethane coating, which is highly flammable. This component is still used today, but with non-flammable film, but it is possible that at the time of the constitution, which was not so long ago, it was not compulsory. In any case, the subsequent investigation will indicate what really happened and why it happened with such virulence. Most importantly, no casualties have been reported so far 🙏🏻🙏🏻 UPDATED 23/02 - 15.50 CET: At the moment, five fatalities have been reported and there could be between 9 and 15 missing.

Wouldn't be surprised if that building had the same insulation as the Grenfell tower. If so, it would be grave negligence not to shut down the building after the Grenfell disaster or change the insulation
Obviously you aren't aware of the thousands and thousands of buildings with this type of cladding around the western world...are you prepared to spend billions and billions of euros, pounds or dollars to remove the cladding of this thousands of buildings???...it's very easy and simple to criticises things sitting in front of a PC or from a móvil phone, but reality is something very very different.

It wasn't on the ground floor it started - and the material on the outside was highly flammable and it was a really windy day which helped the spread - I live close in Valencia
This is scary to watch on my screen. Can't imagine how the people living there felt. I hope speedy recovery for the injured ones. My heart goes out to those who lost their homes. These are not just places they used to live in, it's their dreams and memories.

I was witnesing from the street this fire and it looked like the firefighters didn't even try to stop it from burning to the ground as its walls were made from some very easily flammable material. Poor fire safety in building code allows this to happen.

Posts like yours saying "the building was made from easily flammable material" are just pure speculation and are so typical of social media. There will need to be an investigation and there are many elements that need to be looked at. There are flammable types of cladding but there are fire-resistant types, too. The insulation plays a role, so does the types of fire walls, and most important of all, the sprinkler system. This building was 15 years old - how do you know that the periodic safety checks have been properly carried out by the apartment owners? There are lots of elements that need to be looked at, and the only intelligent response at this stage is to hope for the safety of those who are still missing, and to wait for the investigation to reveal exactly what happened.
This is big news as it uses the same cladding as Grenfell. What the media won't tell you is there have been nine fires with that cladding in the UK, one was Grenfell, but the other eight only had one flat burn!
China should be held accountable for manufacturing these highly inflammable building cladding. So many people have lost their lives in several building that caught fire using this cladding. Its never going to end with this, several thousand other buildings all over the world have this cladding. RIP to all that lost their lives, and a speedy recovery for those injured.

@@angelf2966 The poster did not say anything, he asked a question ffs. And you should know that just because a building has a sprinkler system, it doesn't mean that it is working. Sprinkler systems should be tested at least annually, but not everyone does.

How long did it take for the Fire Department to Arrive? Fires don't spread that fast. I been in a Fire and I was saved and the apartment building was much older. There is something not right about this Fire.
I live here - from first fire, the entire building was engulfed within 14 minutes - highly flammable material on the facade and we had very high winds yesterday helping it spread - don't you know about Grenfell in the UK - same material sake thing happened

No use when the facade material highly flammable and we had had very high winds that made it spread - from the initial fire - the entire building was engulfed - no sprinkler system can combat that
@@lulasnannajodie7723 That last statement is just amateur nonsense. I'm not aware of any high rise building where a fire destroyed a high rise building that had sprinklers, cladding or no cladding. To the contrary, there are at least two well-documented cases where sprinklers easily dealt with a high-rise fire that would have been tragic without them. Stop speculating about stuff you have no idea about.

We seen this to many times. The governments are failing to keep its people safe and improve building safety. This cladding should been removed years ago after what happened in London and other city's.
This seems too unreal especially in a time when technology and building safety codes are as advanced as ever. I've seen my share of apartment fires when i lived in Toronto, Canada but nothing to this scale. How can an entire building be engulfed in flames like that? Were there no fire safety codes? no sprinkler systems? no inflammable or fire retardant building material? This looks like a building built from matchsticks not modern sophisticated construction material.I'm surprised that such a massive fire on such a scale particularly in a modern apparently "1st world" country like Spain happened. You would probably think ah some poorer nation somewhere else in the world this might occur but Spain? What the hell happened in Spain? They can sign multibillion $ soccer players and pay them top dollar yet can't properly construct a modern highrise? Something's very fishy with this.

20 hours ago i placed this comment on a China Observer video of a similar incident "OK Inferior cladding , what the odds that the materials going cheap are those that Europe just classed inferior after Grenfell Tower London burnt down and those companies with excess stock of cladding no longer saleable in the UK sold it cheap to China some one should investigate the cladding materials markets global supply chain." How quickly it appears i was proved wrong,, Europe is still allowing building clad in terrible quality cladding materials.
The problem is that many materials that are imported from other countries, usually from Asia, have the bad habit of falsifying EU quality seals. I am a Spanish architect and building engineer and I see the problem that it is impossible to control all the materials in a project, especially if the labels are falsified. Every material used in a project cannot be taken to a quality control laboratory, because it is assumed that the quality seals indicate that these materials have already been verified. I know that everyone tends to blame us technicians, because we do not control the execution of the works well enough, but perhaps the controls should be carried out at the borders that import much of the garbage that ends up placed on the façade of a building. .
