Life will find a way. I would keep one year worth of MREs on hand for each member of my family. I live in rural Missouri. I can a lot of food. And dehydrated a lot of meat. Keep about 1 year of food for each member of your family. Over and above the MREs.

Very few cities that are at risk are capable of sustaining a firestorm. Nuclear weapons airbursts, ground bursts, and a few shallow underground bursts would not cause massive planet wide earthquakes. On the order of 1% of the world's ozone would be depleted. Global fallout would be comparable to that produced by all atmospheric nuclear tests to date. There'd also be local hotspots from ground bursts. There would be no great extinction event.
