George London retired from a 17-year-long career as a physics teacher at Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville, Maryland. The 74-year-old is affectionately known by students as a math wiz who was able to make a difficult topic easier to learn.
But he also lived a life many of his students may not have been aware of. London is a decorated military officer, and one of the first Black Air Force test pilots.
The armed forces is celebrated as one of America's most diverse institutions. But Black people are almost invisible in the cockpits of America's military aircraft. The Air Force's pilot field has always been overwhelmingly white and male.
Col. London is the first African American test pilot of the Boeing C-17, one of the largest military aircrafts in the Air Force. He is the 9th of only 29 Black pilots to have graduated from the Air Force’s test pilot school in it’s 75 years of existence. » Subscribe to WUSA9: bit.ly/2lO8e2F
