On October 21, 2022 Brightline began its first test of operating its trains at 110mph in preparation for the expansion of its passenger rail service to Orlando in 2023. The trains operated over 11 miles of completed track between CP Rio in Jensen Beach and CP White City south of Fort Pierce near Midway Road.
The tests began at 79mph and slowly increased to be running at 110mph by the end of the day. This was the first time a Brightline train has run faster than 79mph.

I checked out the length of the train. It's 493 feet long. Traveling at 110 mph, it would cross the intersection in 3 seconds. Not much of a wait. No reason to jump the gun here.

People might say that 110 mph isn't that fast, but for US I'll take it. ("Baby steps" is good). Good job Brightline! Can't wait till this leg is in operation. Nice job on the drone shots @The Roaming Railfan (esp picking out great locations to take them; nice scouting.)

I agree. Other nations with HSR networks had the benefit of working with an existing passenger rail network + a society used to taking trains everywhere. Due to the dismantling of inter-city passenger train routes in most states post-WW2, we're basically having to rebuild or reactivate our inter-city passenger rail services from scratch. This is what I'd call a good start.

110 mph is already proper fast. Here in Germany, the maximum allowed speed on sections with grade crossings is actually "only" 160 Km/h ~ 100 mph

I was hoping you would document the speed test and so happy you were there ! It's a time to celebrate this important step in the progress of running at higher speeds and it didn't disappoint. You had fantastic drone footage ( as usual ), but the ground level footage with "Bright Green" at speed was exciting to say the least. Have you heard any progress reports on further expansion on to Tampa ? Thanks again for all your work and dedication on the building of Brightline.

I saw the test runs on my bus ride home from school yesterday, I thought I saw the crossing lights at Walton road were activated, so I jokingly said to my friend, “hey look, a train is coming” not knowing if the crossing was actually activated or not. Sure enough, literally 1 second after I said that, I faintly saw the tail end of the train go by and said, “oh there actually was a train coming”. Me, my friend, and the bus driver all started laughing about the whole thing. It’s a true memory that will now live rent free in my head.

Great video. But from the european view (I am in Germany) this isn’t really fast. Many highspeed trains operate at about 150 mph and some even on 185 mph. But as I said, great video and especially great drone shots. I wonder which is your maximum speed you could keep up with.

This is the future of HSR in the US. Instead of spending a decade building 200+ mph projects, we should instead focus on getting all of our track up to class 6 and running diesel trains at 110mph.

If fare payer numbers made it necessary, could extra passenger cars be easily inserted to these 1-4-1 formations and, if so, is there a maximum? With two locomotives, maybe as much as 1-8-1? Are stations designed to accommodate lengthened trains?

Yes, the trains can be expanded in the future as demand increases. The platforms are built for a maximum of 10 coaches and 2 locomotives.

@@RoamingRailfan Thanks for your reply. Another thing I've noticed is that the trains are currently using both tracks to travel in the same direction. Is that to even wear, maybe bed in the new tracks? I assume the lines are signalled for bi-directional operation? Thanks again from the UK.
