Emily Whitehead was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when she was 5 years old. After two years of unsuccessful chemotherapy and rapidly declining health, she became the first pediatric patient in the world to receive CAR T-cell therapy. Whitehead, along with her parents and doctor, joins the 3rd Hour of TODAY to celebrate 10 years of being cancer free.

She is literally a beacon of hope for all families who have experienced car T cell therapy. My son had very little hope when he relapsed, but luckily he was the fifth child at his children’s hospital to receive this treatment and he hit his three year post car t anniversary a little over a month ago. We are so grateful to live in this time where he was given the treatment to keep him alive.

If anyone looking to get CAR T and can’t afford it please look into India, they recently started CAR T and it’s cheaper compared to west. I read that it costs 20-30,000 dollars. But they are bringing it down to 10,000 depending on the amount of patients. Hope my message reaches to people in need.

@tammyslaughter9587 Год назад
Your writing is a bit illiterate for someone who is claiming to be a research scientist, and what you’re saying in your comment is inaccurate, and again if you truly were a CAR T cell research scientist you’d know the process of CAR T cell you wouldn’t be making this comment. You are basically saying that money is the only reason that all cancer patients are not able to have this therapy and save their lives, and if you really were a research scientist to this therapy you would know there are so many more factors as to why people are not eligible for this treatment other than money. One of the reasons is that CAR T cell therapy is not effective for any or every cancer but it’s only effective and approved for blood cancers. But as a CAR T research scientist you would have known this right?
@acesin-et7pp

@@tammyslaughter9587 if you really know about scientific literature then you should have understood when i said "lots (lots doesn't mean all cancer patients) of lives could be saved" means for those patients it would work but is not available to them, and they are in millions". Penicillin could save more lives if its allergen epitope is replaced, it doesnt mean penicillin could save people with brain tumor, but means only those who had bacterial infection which even a stupid person can easily grasp. you just trying to be over smart when you are otherwise. You are just trolling over the internet finding people on whom you could vent your personal frustration by making them feel same like yourself.

@@acesin-et7pp my comment to you has nothing to do with with your use of “lots”, you’re just deflecting. Understanding what you mean when you say”lots” has absolutely nothing to do with scientific literature. It doesn’t matter whether you think I’m trying to be “over smart” I’m not the one claiming to be a research scientist for CAR T cell therapy. Since you are claiming to be a CAR T scientist please explain which patients this works on and how to get treatment for CAR T cell.

Hi Dr. Grub, if you see this: can you try to get in touch with Dr. Jeff Boris at CHOP cardiology, Dr. Blair Grubb at Toldeo U (director of Cardiac Electrophysiology/ cardiologist, head of autonomic disorder fellowship training program UTMC, and innate immune system pathophysiology researcher), Dr. Anne Maitland at Mt Sinai- NY (MD& Ph. D at UPenn, professor of Allergy & Immunology/ clinical Immunology at Mount Sinai), and/or Lauren Stiles at Dysautonomia International. I'm a CHOP grad- now adult patient living with post EBV dysautonomia and severe mast cell activation related idiopathic anaphylaxis (and related immuno-mediated autoimmune disease) and CHOP diagnosed classical ehlers danlos syndrome (the hypermobile type, previously type 3, is expected to be as common as 1 in 33 but rarely dx). There's several of us- once peds- now adult post viral immuno-mediated chronically ill patients with connective tissue disease presentation consistent with EDS, Marfans, sticklers, hypermobility spectrum disorder, and similar disease pathogenesis.. Including a large majority of post viral blood cancer survivors of Burkett's lymphoma, ALL, AML, aplastic anemia, mastocytosis, etc. There HAS to be a link with risk of developing these post viral blood cancers and underlying connective tissue disorder.. just look at Emily's dad.. he's definition marfanoid habitus phenotype. The other side is neurofibromatosis type 2 which is also mast cell mediated immunomodulated growth. Many of us who have post viral autoimmunity related dysautonomia respond positively to HD iVIG product and gleevac; which further suggests similar underlying mechanism of disease. If not to evaluate the underlying connection, at least please try to reach out for the sake of post chemo autonomic neuropathy management. I think it could lead to better application in use of the CAR T cell to a wider and huge spectrum of further understanding of the shared underlying Mechanisms that can be cross applied. Thanks!

With CAR T cell therapy you basically take the patients own t-cells (which are part of the immune system) and genetically alter them. They receive cancer specific receptors which then detect cancer cells. Once they can identify cancer cells, the immune system works just as it would when fighting for example the flu. Usually, the immune system is enabled by the cancer so it will not detect cancer cells. I hope this helps :)

@@JustMe-12345 Actually you’re incorrect, many people relapse after having CAR T cell therapy and some have had it more than once. Many have gone a few years, or months after CAR T and relapse. Having CAR T cell does not guarantee a cure, there are just too many variables for each patient. I got my source from my hematologist/oncologist in preparation for CAR T cell therapy in Texas. But you can find whatever info you are wanting to know from MD Anderson, Mayo Clinic, Moffitt Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins, Dana-Farber, Sloan Kettering, Stanford etc. they can provide information for CAR T therapy. I am also part of a CAR T cell support group, so I get a lot of my info first hand from people who are in different stages of CAR T Cell therapy. But you are free to believe whatever you choose.

@tammyslaughter9587 Год назад
Over a million dollars unless you’re in a trial. This therapy does not come without severe risks that’s why many times it’s the last resort treatment and it is only 40% successful with many people still having relapses. This treatment can cause cytokine release syndrome, which can cause organ damage and death, it can also cause neurotoxicity with many people not even knowing their loved ones or not able to speak and not knowing their own names, although it’s usually reversible. Plus if you survive treatment whether it is successful or not people after treatment usually will suffer from B-cell aplasia for the rest of their lives. So before you get all angry about it being around for awhile it is still being used cautiously for certain people with blood cancers.
