I finally got my Hunter machines up and running, so now it's time to figure them out. I have a new set of Michelin PS4s that need to be mounted and balanced. Time to fumble my way through this process and squeeze an hour's worth of work into 6 hours!

As someone who has been using this exact equipment for the past 5+ years this video was painful to watch. Not in the typical Obsessed Garage fashion. I'd highly recommend getting someone there that knows what they're doing to help you along, your local hunter rep that you purchased the equipment through should be more than happy to come by and get you going more efficiently(Especially for the $$$$ these machines cost!). A couple notes: 1. You used way too much lube, lubing the wheel also is unnecessary. 2. The press arms need to come down that far to keep the top bead in the drop center when mounting otherwise you may damage the bead. 3. You didn't show setting the wheel dimensions on the balancer so I hope you're doing that. I'm assuming that just happened off camera. 4. Roadforce balancing is great and I do it on every wheel, but you will learn that if the road force is high and the machine only tells you to rotate the tire an 1/8 of a turn or less you're typically better off flipping it 180 and checking it again. Side Note: 3M Wheel Weight Surface Prep is great!

There could be many reasons for the high road force numbers, but the “chasing” you are experiencing is classic assembly not mounting correctly to the balancer. 1) you must perform a bead massage on the Revolution. That will ensure the bead is seating correctly on the rim. lube tire and rim as you did and use the bead massage function before heading to the balancer. You should apply some lube to the outer sidewall so the pressure wheels do not damage the sidewalls 2) Balancer: Check that your collet is not too small and bottoming out inside the hub. Some hub bores have an inner lip. You may need a larger collet or use the red spacer to ensure you are getting good clamping force. 3) Perform a centering check on the balancer to verify you have mounted the assembly correctly. It’s a good idea to turn the rim a bit while clamping. Double tap the pedal to activate the auto-wind function. 4) Remember, the clamp on the balancer must be TIGHT. 5) Turn your Smart Weight savings to zero in setup or use dynamic balance mode. Smart Weight is meant to save high-volume tire shops money on wheel weight costs and will focus on static balance over couple “shimmy” balance meaning you do not get a perfectly balanced assembly. You will likely notice some vibration on a Tesla using default Smart Weight settings. You can see the results on screen on the tire images (bottom-right corner on your display) - left is static and right is couple. The dashed line is the “acceptable vibration” tolerance which I can see is set very high. 6) The 3M adhesive weight system is awesome. Tesla uses it and it allows them to balance to 1 gram of tolerance. You can do this on your machine in dynamic balance mode with rounding turned off. 7) Don’t final tighten your lug bolts/nuts with the car’s weight on the wheel assembly. Use the parking brake or a steel wheel chock to hold the wheel in place while final torquing. Truly mastering wheel balance harmonics takes a lot of learning and practice, but you’ll get there! Your tools are the finest in the industry.

@steveyoung3044
@steveyoung3044 3 года назад
As far as your problems with road force, you might have the heaviest part of the tire close to the valve stem. While I dont think Michelin marks the heaviest spot some manufactures do still use a red dot on the side of the tire to denote the heaviest spot and a white or yellow spot to denote the lightest spot. I think if the machine is telling you that you need a lot of weight to balance you need rotate the tire 180.

Just some advice here. I have been mounting tires for a long a while now. If you want to do a really good job of it you should definitely clean the rims first then take all the old wheel weights off and use some 3m adhesive remover and a plastic scraper to remove any old wheel weight adhesive that way the barrel of the rim will look nice and you will have a nice surface to mount your new wheel weights to.

I have a question about the air pressure when not using the OEM tires. Back when i had my jeeps 37’s balanced they set them to almost 60 psi. Felt like my tires were bricks haha. Anyways, normally they are around 30 psi.
@Rocheman79
@Rocheman79 3 года назад
@@Jeeper1378 tire pressure can be tough to figure out when not using a stock sized tire. 60 psi seems like it would be over the manufactures maximum tire pressure for that tire. What I would have done in that case is set the tires to whatever the door jam says like 35psi then I would take chalk and draw a line across the tread and drive a few feet with the car if the inside is missing the chalk more then the outside of the tread then you air pressure is too high if the outside of the tread is missing more chalk then the inside you pressure is to low you would want to adjust this in 3 psi increments until you found a pressure where the tire seemed to wear the chalk evenly

Find someone with a tire truing machine to get the road force into spec. You can balance them all day long, but if the tire is out of round, you will still have a vibration. You would think the money you spend for tires these days, they would be perfectly round, but I feel they are worse than ever. Tire truing does shave a small amount off of the tread depth, but it is well worth it in my opinion.

When you have a 1/4 ounce after applying weights it generally means the weights need adjusted on the wheel depending on where it is telling you to add weight. If it’s 180 degrees out that means you need to remove weight from the original spot. 90 degrees out the weight just needs to be shifted etc. basically when you put the weights on you weren’t centered.

In my city we have a guy who soley mounts tires and people ask why he charges $75-$100 per wheel to mount and balance. When you watch him do what is basically an art form of balancing tires taking him at minimum 1-2 hours to mount and balance 4 tires you understand. When other tireshops throw weights where it says and never really use a road force balancer to it's actual potential and wonder why your tire shakes at 60mph. He's told me numerous times that certain tires won't balance and if the customer has the time they send em back. Pirelli is his #1 offender to tires that fail road force.

From my experience, we don't use Roadforce unless there's a vibration complaint. You can tell if your tire is deformed with the Roadforce option and use the values the balancer gives as proof for warranty. Some dealerships don't even have Roadforce on their balancers. Also, maybe you did it before but I didn't see you set the values for the weights placement on the wheel. (Sidenote: Why do you have 2 values on the outer side?)

If there's more than 16 lbs. of road force, rotate the tire 180 degrees on the rim and try again. You should always be able to get under 16 lbs. by moving the tire on the rim to where the balancer says only once...no need to do it several times. Also your machine should be able to check for lateral and radial runout of the rim and if it's good then the tire is the issue. Great video, but it looks you really need to get some training from manufacturer rep, but knowing you, I am sure you won’t quit until you become the best at this. The road force number is usually good to attain but sometimes it is hard to achieve if you have less ideal tires or wheels. Even new Michelins can come new with large unbalance, and let’s not forget this is a Tesla, so it is highly likely the wheels are less than ideal. Also a final note if the machine is showing a high roadforce number, and it is only asking you to rotate the tire by less than a quarter of a turn, it would usually mean that you probably have a bad reading or possibly large built in unbalance in the tire or the wheel,. In that case I would rotate the tire by 180 degrees and get another reading to confirm you didn’t get a bad reading. Once you get this down, my next flat or tire replacement , I am driving to you from Washington state to get my tire taken care of by the best. Mark

You mounted a tire without jacking up a wheel or driving to a tire shop.. Thats a success in my book. I really think that the key is finding the light spot in the tire and lining it up with the stem in the wheel, then you won't spend so much time adjusting the tire for road-force. It seems the machine can only recommend small moves in the tire, so being closer to perfect from the beginning will mean less iterations with the rotation.

Lube even when demount, roller longevity. When mounting tire push the side right in front of you down So that the tire goes sort of under head as u turn in

Also weights changing means either it's not correctly on the collet, or odd case you need a calibration

Don't worry so much for roadforce, a lot of low pro will have 9-22 lb roadforce an if you try chasing 19s you'll be changing tires all day. 17s with like 225/45/17 would road force better.

The tires are fine, those wheels are garbage. A fiend of mine with a M3P had the same issue. You may not even feel 20lbs of road force.

Considering he makes somewhere between $2 - 5K an hour; the equipment is considered a business expense for tax purposes; and his UTube payday he'll be even in two weeks (and this tire mount/balance). Then throw in profit from selling valve stem pullers, air chucks, perhaps the machines themselves, he'll be hundreds of thousands ahead by this time next year.

@@Audittr2108 I’m sorry I would have to disagree with you on this one Chris. I’m sure you know what Matt is all about and his reasons and thought process in doing what he does. It’s more than just to buy nice expensive things. It’s about the community and the people and following your passion. If you follow up on mats journey to where he’s got to today you will agree with me on the fact that he’s doing it for the greater good to feed his soul with happiness and give people knowledge and a single point of contact for all things related to cars. Anyways I hope your comment was a joke. Take care my friend.

@@SIHRA2- I’ve been a subscriber of this channel for a few years now so have followed the journey. I rarely watch the videos now as it seems the content lately and the solutions he provides are only for maybe 1% of car and detailing enthusiasts. This video is a prime example. Who will ever buy their own $60K tyre mounting equipment. You’d have to be pretty wealthy and those that are that wealthy, pay someone to do everything as their time is better spent elsewhere!

@@ObsessedGarage I think people should fix their usage of 1%. This is 0.25% for the DIY guys. But also by age! Im in 1% for 27 y/o but I can’t possibly afford one so I’m trying to stay 1% as I age! Lol

My coworkers, "What is all that beeping?" I explain, it's Obsessed Garage and he bought $40,000 worth of tire mounting and balancing equipment and it makes beeps when he uses it. You also stuck too much weight on then it keeps asking for more to keep trying to balance its self out
