I was saying the same, Kinda bad to be a presenter on top gear and not knowing this. Specifically when he mentioned P1 just a minute before. This is way I almost never watch this channel. To much lack of knowledge from this channel
If it is 62k less than a 296 GTB, it obviously isn't a competitor to it. But as a rival to an R8 Performance or 992 Turbo (S), it sure is a nice option. The design is also amazing in my opinion.
2:30 But there has never been a McLaren you can do this in before, two presses here into e mode and you creep into a village on electric... Never?🤣 I remember Jeremy Clarkson did the same trick in the McLaren P1
The 296 is not really the comp here as its more expensive and faster. Its actually the MC20. Both have the same price, speed, quickness, interior simplicity, etc. (other competitors are the R8, turbo s, RWD huracan, NSX). And I'd take the MC20 just based on looks alone over the Artura and the fact that it sounds better with the Maserati's cool blow off sounds (both engines sound pretty dull otherwise).
Quite right. MC20 is prettier.... Oh just read on, you said that too. I am a little bored of Mclaren though, it's the same design over and over again. If you can afford this or a MC20 then you could probably afford a 296 lol... if I had the choice, it would be a MC20 or 296. Actually I've just googled the price, are you sure? It looks like the 296 is only a bit more expensive. No sorry mate, the Ferrari is nearly 100K more and the two cars would reach 1000m's neck and neck as the Ferrari is heavier
Not an overly exciting car - but i respect it. I like how McLaren release a platform and then continually iterate it to finish off with their more extreme versions - so I can't wait to see what the final form of this model looks like. Can't wait to see what the bigger brother of this car is like too.
@@cm-15 With gas prices hitting $6-$7 per gallon now, who seriously wants a screaming V12 if it's going to cost you $15 in fuel just to pull it out of your garage, and then another $60 just to get it to Cars and Coffee before you even go on a real drive?
@@ELECTRICEYEMEDIA imagine thinking caring about gas prices when you own a V12 Ferrari. I don't even care that much and i own an old V8 Benz. You people seem to lack any logic.
@@Jacobbunt The same is true of 911 supercars. Even a GT2RS...if you remove the wing, what you have is a car that looks nearly identical to the regular Turbo.
The buyer for this just wants “a new mclaren” and don’t really care how it drives. I’ll keep my 650S. The super series vs the sport series cars are significantly different cars from driving dynamics to power delivery.
I think the 296GTB is the better package all around.. Far more Power, a nicer looking interior, the infamous dual clutch with the great Ferrari-typical shift sounds (which I love) and also the retro design rear fenders loom gorgeous! And especially the sound is the icing on the cake! It could easily be mistaken for a N/A V12
The R8 no longer sounds better, they ruined the exhaust with the gas particulate filters. I think the artura looks better than the 296 but i'd take the ferrari or turbo s over this still depending on what mattered more to me
Just drove this car for about a half hour and it's much better looking in person, great technology, nicely refined but really goes to show you how great of a deal the 570s is right now for almost 100k less. It didn't feel much faster than the 570s. It sounds nice but in no way did it sound better than the V8.
I understand the comparison with the 296 GTB because they have similar tech setup, but a Ford Escort and a Ford T also has similar tech setup. A Boxster and a 911 also has similar setup / does not make them comparable. The 296 is 60k more expensive and higher output.
Ngl, I am excited about this car, and to see where it goes. But there’s still the 296. The only problem is, I like it, and I’m not really even a big Ferrari fan.
McApple. Mild redesigns. High price. Brand apologists in droves. Once you decide the car for you the salesman will say "For just a bit more you can get the next model up........in thIs model year.......on consignment.........for a place holder" I love McLaren. Big part of my life and im a neighbour of the development centre.
Got an order on the 296, and this makes me glad I went with it over the artura. Awkward styling and weird interior on this. The orange does look stunning however. One thing i like is no reverse gear, which is something the 296 doesn’t have. Always puzzled me why Ferrari would do it on the sf90 but not the 296.
I also have a 296 on order. I wish Ferrari was as committed to keeping the weight as low like Mclaren has done. Not a huge fan of the styling of the Artura and the Ferrari interior is far superior as it should be for additional cost. Either way they are both great cars and this is my first Ferrari as a long time Mclaren fanboy
No doubt Maclaren is a awesome day making vehicle depicting warm and bright orange colour like we see when sun just rises and sets. ''Morning🌄(Maclaren) shows the day'' this statement absolutely a perfect match.💫❤😊👏🏼👏🏼
296 is the sucessor of the f8 tributo since they've stop to take orders in. I would say that the next hybrid that will replace the 720S will be the rival of the 296. 540/570/600lt never really had comp at ferrari and it seems that it will pretty much look the same with the new line up that Mclaren is offering. None than less, new artura in papaya orange really does it for me!
McLaren trying to copy Ferrari models but only collecting flops. 296>Artura ( and yes, this is the competitor but the point is that the Artura sucks and it's useless), Roma> GT, Monza > Elva, Sf90 > any current McLaren
This car looks so good from the front, but I hate those running lights... I just really really wish they were nestled inside the eyesockets with the rest of the headlights...
No regen braking? Not a decision I would agree with. Not only does it put energy back into the battery, it also saves a lot on brake heating and wear. But i guess that if you're going to pay out for a ride like that, you can afford brake pads and a few more litres of petrol.
mclaren design definetly evolves- going from the 12c to the 720 there's clear evolution going on. I still think the 720 looks like a futuristic alien spaceship. the problem is, the artura doesn't look more futuristic than the 720, and it's supposed to be this next-gen hybrid spiritual baby P1 successor. hell, I think even the P1 looks more futuristic than the artura. the artura is by no means an unattractive car, in fact it's quite gorgeous. but it just doesn't have the same level of finesse as the 720's design and it looks like it should be placed in a tier below.
@@budja1501 it's not supposed to be above the 720S though; it's an evolution of the sport series, so the 570S. Makes sense that it looks lesser than the 720, but to my eye it still looks too similar to the 570.
Very interesting to see no regenerative braking. This probably makes the car much more nimble and enjoyable to drive with the reduced weight (compared to cars with regenerative braking) and better brake feel. However, probably want to have regen for an everyday car for the improved efficiency. For a sports car though, id have no regen.
My 66 plate 650s spider is build no 60XX. So between late 2016 to mid 2022(6years) they have produced 19,000 cars of mixed models? In that time they have shed almost half their workforce, sold their headquarters(production & assembly plant.)Then we've had 3years of Covid, chip shortage & wiring harness availability! They've either manged brilliantly or someone got their sums wrong?
I really like McLarens, have been for years. But the Artura sounds like its quite a compromised package and I don't quite understand where it sits in the market
It's really hard for me to compare it to 296 because i already see artura as a gt4 car and so it's in a whole different class below 296 which i first known as a gt3 car lol
I don’t know how you British make six cylinders sound good (so good) but y’all do. American and Japanese six pots tend to sound, well, bad and coarse. A six banger Jag and this particular Big Mac sound brilliant! I didn’t mention the Germans because yes a BMW in line 6 sounds really good and that is your direct competition so it only makes sense
I'm sure McLaren will get this car right before it goes to it's customer's. And by 2025 maybe a LT version. But great to see a British firm making such a great looking car. An entry level V6 hybrid.
V6 120º with the turbo inside the “V” Hybrid technology to support the petrol engine.. It’s the same in the 296 gtb, the only difference is the power and performance. So is it a true “revolution”? 🤔
Legitimate question...if you stroll into town on EV mode and use up all your battery before you park, and reverse is handled through the electric motor, how will you reverse the car from your parking space without any charge in the battery?
The car senses that the battery is getting low so it automatically turns on the engine just to charge it up. Basically you will never run low on battery, unless you ran out of fuel.
@@ThingsandStuffchannel An alternative might be not being able to completely drain the battery, then automatically starts the engine, and runs with no hybrid assistance other than reverse untill the battery is charged to a certain point ?
I was disappointed when I found that the MP4 was not produced with a manual option. Still that way at McLaren. And Aston said a couple yrs ago they would always have a car with manual option, but that has since evaporated. Yes, I know, flippy paddles are faster, and so when I am seriously trying to improve my times while sim racing, that's what I always use. But I have no plans to seriously race a real car. So it came down pretty much to a Porsche GT3 or Lotus. So I bought a 2018 GT3 at the end of 2018. Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren make fast and wonderful cars. But as long as my left foot works (I'm 70), I want a manual for all my vehicles. Glickenhaus is an option, but more than I felt comfortable paying. Maybe in a couple yrs.
Mclaren wants to compete at the top of the bracket, a manual would severely hinder the goal. Concerning porsche, there's a reason as to why the RS models are PDK only. The automotive community is all about keeping up with the neighbor down the street. Sadly, due to competition, a manual option isn't in the cards. A manual would be a big disservice to the car. Not only would the car fail to perform in the way mclaren intended, the car would be a nightmare to drive;...from the way the gear ratios work to how it makes power, a manual would make the car extremely unpleasant to drive. Chris harris talks all about it in his whiskey files bit at 25:25. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8o9h3n-VTx0.html
@@bmx687 Apparently not in the US where I live. Reports say here, as of a year ago, the manual 'take rate' for the GT3 is 70%. I've read this from numerous sources. But re: McLaren, I'm sure you're correct there will be no manual, ditto for F-cars and L-cars.
@@rwschumm Hey Richard! I edited my comment to include a Chris Harris bit. Don't get me wrong, the GT3 is cool, but again, there is a reason as to why RS model Porsches are all PDK. Porsche wants their RS models to be the fastest possible hence PDK. You can get yhe GT3 in a manual, you cannot get thr GT3RS in a manual nor the GT4RS or GT2RS
It's amazing-- companies just cannot make modern cars sound good. There's no passion anymore, just noise. Sporting cars need to return to experience. They're too fast and completely devoid of engagement.
720S is my fav McLaren. After the Senna & Speedtail I fell off with them & other super car companies, idky. Fell off as in stopped paying attention. Still love them.
I dont understand the lack of regen braking. My understanding is that it recovers lots of power in normal day to day driving (my friends Kia EV shows often 50 to 60% from regen over a day to day run) and it does not weigh that much extra as it uses the EV Drive to recover the power. ???? The small battery in this is going to run out fast (or suck out the energy from the motor to charge the battery). I wonder how many laps on the track before this just losses 30% of its power carrying a brick (dead battery) around. ???
