For those curious about the Person at Porsche who made this one and other Models like it possible, search for "Andreas Preuninger". He's a True Car Guy and the opposite of "Business Person who has no idea about Cars" of which sadly too many are around in decision-making positions. In fact i believe Chris Harris here on the Top Gear Channel did visit Andreas and did a great talk with him, but there's much more Prost & Cheers from the Berchtesgadener Land in the Bavarian Alps edit: Preuninger not Breuninger
I think you can thank Porsche as a whole because I’m sure there are passionate people from the likes of Audi, Merc, VW, etc. that want to do something special, but the board didn’t provide funding cause they thought there would be too little demand to make it profitable. Porsche on the other hand are just full of passionate people, so you can’t just give credit to Mr Prunigner.
@@raymondberg7385 You're right. "Breuninger" is also a lastname in Germany, just a variation of "Preuninger" so i mixed it up haha. But glad someone else with a german lastname "Berg" corrected me, only half as embarassing now
@@magnustan841 Good Point. Of course it's not just Andreas Preuninger behind this, but regarding Interviews and behind the scenes stuff, lots of him to check out!
I think combustion engines will make a comeback with the renewable fuels Legislation could even change before we make it to 2030…. Mild hybrids could keep them around for long enough if not, until the fuels are perfected.
Even if they do, it’s unlikely they will license it to other car makers. They’re not making a lot of that stuff, 500000 litres in the first few years of production. I reckon that’s about 8000 911s worth of fuel and that’s it. Think F1 has a better chance of getting something like that out to the automotive world.
I'm really less impressed with these electric cars, because they are not practical. The infrastructure is slowly coming in place to meet the demand of the cars as vehicles move into inception. Love combustion engines, the sound is intoxicating!!!
By standard logic, the faster the mass average car owner and model transition to EV. The more fuel will be available to burned by petrol heads for a longer time.
No one will ever be able to convince me using logic, reason and facts that Porsche doesn't build the greatest sports cars in the world! I thought that in the 1980s when I was a kid. I've been an engineer for 30+ years now and know a lot more about cars and feel even more strongly that no automobile manufacturer gives their owners as much as Porsche does, at any price.
Having spent quite a bit of time behind the wheel of the first gen GT4, I've got to say this looks like a masterpiece. The standard GT4 is so beautifully balanced, obviously the only major downfall was the slight lack of power. It was a quick car, but by no means fast, and you had to work it higher in the power band to get its full potential. This on the other hand looks like something else, for the best.
That’s the issue I hear with these gt4s. They have long gear rations so you barley get to second gear and your already breaking the speed limit. Hopefully they fixed it for this one
@@ejhaneine3168 Well that's pretty well any supercar now, 2nd gear is well over the posted highway limits. It just was a little on the lazy side until 4500rpm. But my experience was with the manual, which definitely made up for it.
Trouble with this video as I see it is that Jack communicates so much enthusiasm and energy he makes me actually WANT this car. That rarely happens to me these days. Then I look out of the window and see my 2010 Diesel Forester and feel bad for it.
My biggest positive is that that superb noise is being channeled into the interior of the car. Andy Pruninger said it meets all worldwide exterior noise regs, but the inside it’s the “Robbie Williams of Porsches”. So many car lovers criticise OPF for ruining noise, but that’s only on the outside. Who is supposed to enjoy a performance car? THE DRIVER (and his passenger(s)). That’s what’s important, and Porsche Motorsport have nailed it again. Such a purposeful car, a fitting goodbye to the ICE entry-level Porsche sports car. I am hopeful the EV replacement will live up to the Porsche name, but it’s unfortunate.
One of the best, most enthusiastic review, and I agree,as a sports car Driver for 51 yrs, I don't see a shifter is required. Now that is a First, for me, EVER ! When do you know electric cars ARE HERE. When the suits approve, stepping on model toes. Cayman on heels of GT3. Nissan Z nipping heels of GTR...yep Electric is Hidding in the brush ! Enjoy. These Golden Days of Petrol inhaling, it was fun, while it lasted.
@@SaidOkuyucu9580 and you look like very, 'very' intelligent person. Would you buy the same phone brand if they start making dvmb phones?, it is the same with cars. Car manufacturers react to what sheep are buying... and sheep buy whatever hype marketing tell them to buy. It is that easy, stop being a sheep. 😉
@@eugenux You're missing the point of why EV's are and will mostly take over the car market everywhere given enough time. Yeah sure it's better for the environment but that's not really the biggest driver. EV's are simply a better, more reliable and cheaper infrastructure in the long run for everyday cars. there's a quarter of moving parts and electricity can be made a dozen different ways, allowing greater flexibility for both developed and developing countries to make (oil, gas, ethanol, wind, nuke, solar, hydro, geothermal, etc). I love the sound of engines, the feeling, the connection to the drive it gives. Personally I have both, an EV for commuting everyday, a NA 6-spd V8 for the weekends. For most people the EV (once the battery price comes down) will be the way to go. Even a lot of fellow aerospace engineers I work with appreciate an engine, but EV is just nicer... and 90%+ of people dont give any shits what they drive as long as it gets them there. There will always be a market of ICE just like people ride horses or sail boats. But most people just want easy and reliable, which is an EV.
Never seen a car that fits both the track and the streets so perfectly. Impeccable balance. Usually you gotta compromise on some class.. somehow not with this one!
I think Porsche's GT division has insisted the RS cars be automatic only for a while now (I guess since the 991). From what I've heard it's because they're meant for maximum track performance, and for that I guess that means automatic only.
They couldn't fit the GT3s manual in here because it wouldn't fit and GT4s manual can't take the 9000rpm redline. So either they'd need to redesign the whole chassis, limit the redline to something lower or design a completely new transmission which would be stupidly expensive. So it's not that they wouldn't, it's that they couldn't.
sounds good but you should try a GT350. V8 at 8000 RPM is amazing. Fantastic car, cant believe they finally gave the Cayman the full beans. the yellow and black is a bit much for me
May not be a gt4rs, but proud to own a 981 cayman S which is an absolute blast to drive and sounds amazing in it's own right. Maybe one day a gr4rs, but for now.....
Incredible car, but as for the "this or GT3 question", the GT3 does have the rear wheel steer which is an impactful piece of tech, not to mention better suspension.
Good luck getting one for MSRP. All of the reviewers quote MSRP but say nothing about the limited availability mark up from the dealers. Awesome car, excellent pricing at MSRP but add $50k+ and be in good standing at your local dealer and you may get a build slot
Don't forget that Porsche is first and engineering firm. They build cars as a second business but very few brands are as pure and prestigious and honestly worth their price like Porsche is
One manual gearbox short of the greatest sports car ever made. If i went to a dealer to buy one of these i would see a 911GT3 manual lying around and would buy that instead to be honest.
They finally finally is willing to give the gt4 it's best engine instead of making it forever missing that last bit of power against the 911. I am now fully convinced this is last combustion cayman model
Porsche has confirmed the next 718 Boxster/Cayman lineup is going electric, so I guess in some way the Cayman GT4 RS is Porsche's final sendoff for the internal combustion 718.
This car could be so much more amazing than it already is, if Porsche just decided to let loose with it. But the already great 911 isn't allowed to be passed by it's baby brother.
They could make the car faster by using more GT3 parts like the rear wheel steering or the new suspension but I’m not sure they can make the car more fun . And if they put more of those new part the car will loose is balence between road car and race car . Maybe they could do a GT5RS and made it an « hardcore » version for the track like the GT2RS but as for the GT4RS I think the car is perfect
Why can’t porsche just allow the world to appreciate this and build as many as they can??? I’m not even saying to lower the price , keep it at 150k , but with $50k markups , and limited production, these will be garage queens and collectors will never drive them. Give one to me and it’ll be a daily.
You’re just making yourself sad mate, Porsche delivered on the Taycan, so not much to worry about for the next EV Cayman. Just be glad you lived through an era like this. I’m 20 years old this year and I’m growing up while the industry is going through this EV transition. I love them, but I love a noisy ICE just as much.
@Charming Chowder Yeah, I don't disagree with you. I now drive an E92 M3 competition spec in manual. I love it and I don't drive much being inner city. I'll buy another Porsche one day - they are beautiful cars. And yes, I invest in other stuff too. Cheers, have a good day.
It’s probably hard to make a manual that shifts well at 9000 revs? I doubt people would want a 4 speed dog box. Sounds like the PDK is awesome. Such a dream car.
£110,000 is just under $200,000AUD. In Australia the Cayman GT4RS will cost $300,800AUD plus on road costs!!! And that's even before any extras!!! You guys in the UK are very fortunate!!
Like many....I've viewed the GT series as the best driver's cars. But this GT4 is something special....if it came in a MT....it would be perfect to me.
I do not want to make any comparison, but that is the best ever sound what any car ant any time produced. THERE IS 12 AND 16 CILINDER CARS IN HISTORY WITH OUTSTANDING SOUND QUALITY, BUT THERE IS SOMETHING TIGHT ,VERY MECHANICAL IN THIS ENGINE WHAT IS BEATING ANYONE ANYWHERE. PLUS IS REVIVING TO 9000 RPM .THIS IS AS GOOD AS COME .WHAT A CAR FOR 120 130 K WITH ALL EXTRAS .THIS IS THE BEST DRIVERS CAR IN THE WORLD .PERIOD. NOTHING FROM 300 K TO MILLION WILL BEAT THIS IN EXPERIENCE ON THE ROAD .PORSCHE IS ON CLASS IN THEIR OWN .THE OTHERS SIMPLY DO NOT HAVE THE HISTORY AND THE TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE TO PRODUCE CAR LIKE THAT .For that you need to win over 30 k races on any road or track .Only Porsche have that heritage.
