In 74 the bus came with a 1.7 liter type 4 engine that had about 60 hp. Not huge but more than 40. The brakes are disk front, drum rear, vacuum assist. If you didn't connect the vacuum line to the new engine the brakes will be very hard. If you retained the original style rear axles you will have to remove the rear CV joints and take them apart, clean them and repack them with CV grease periodically. With the stock engine it was about every 40,000 miles, with that engine I suspect you will have to reduce the interval as the wear on them is directly related to how much power they carry - they used the same joints from the 52 HP 68 bus up through the watercooled Vanagons, the last of which were close to 100 hp and the wear rates steadily increased over the years. Failure to do this maintenance will cause the joints to fail and they will knock especially on turns. They aren't super expensive and they are easy to remove, just unbolt them with the vehicle parked, don't have to remove wheels or anything, just 6 bolts on each joint attaching it to the axle or transmission. Nice bus!
Best mod ever to an otherwise useless vehicle . Well done !! I have the original bay window 76 pick up truck version that would like a new home and needs a Subaru conversion. The old air-cooled 1600 cc lawnmower engine is in it, but the engine case is tired ( studs pulling ) .
I absolutely love this. Once I upgrade my brakes and suspension, I'd love to put a Subaru engine in my 1965 beetle. Either that or maybe an 1800 with air-conditioning... 😅🤣😂

I’m more of an aircooled purist but if I were going to do a conversion Subaru would be the way I’d go. Cool cars and powerplants. If you do that better upgrade brakes and suspension. That is a cute doggie you’ve got!
Those old Subaru boxer engines are difficult to kill. I had a friend who, for some odd reason, decided to try to kill an unused '84 station wagon out the highway. It already needed some radiator work, but he ran it all out and it still ran and ran. I cannot say the same for those VW wasserboxer engines of the '80s.
waster boxer is garbage the gti 16v engine is gold and the 8v 1.8 and 2.0 i’ve ran a 1.8 for 24 hours over 100mph never a problem also hit 160 repeatedly with a 80 scirocco 16v and a diesel trans
Sad to say I had an '83 Wasserboxer... it was fast though... gotva ticket for doing over a 100mph one time. But the cooling system design sucked big time
Sounds like the driver is a fellow Englishman lost in Florida. Can see why that sort of torque would be really useful in an old bay, although personally as a sad purist, I say get a well tuned air cooled flat 4 built by @Mike_Fn. Still cool though
Scouser in Florida, I'm a bit of a purist myself I have an old Camaro with a big carburator and it can be troublesome in the Florida heat. Fuel injection is the way to go.

Well you already have your engine built for Rusty so the next one that you have the other bus the Subaru motor in it I think that's the way to go reliability and power
I had a German friend who told me of a Vanagon he had back home which had a Rabbit diesel in it. Apparently, it was an option in Europe.. He said he liked it and it was very reliable but also seriously lacking in power. Like 50 hp.
CT- an electric motor conversion in your filthy old assed yellow Porsche would be cool. then detail clean & paint the Porsche motor for display in yer garage on an engine stand, as art.
It is good that people have the talent to do such things. But VW Vans never shown them selves safe at high speeds 55 plus. to lite and narrow stance. Just my thoughts.
A Bus with good brakes can stop very well. The weight is actually pretty low in these Busses, and the suspension is designed to work well that way. Looks like you need better and correct size tires(look too small from here, and it revs out pretty quickly). Wow, looks like fun!
the best update i did to my 71 with a Transvair and powerglide was 205-50-14 front tires. but that size is no longer available.. second. to stop fuel from boiling during the summer.. install a 10 micron fuel filter.. before the fuel pump.. sediment from gas stations gets into the fuel system .. holds the fuel pump check valves open.. reducing the pressure to the carb and inside the fuel pump and allows the heat to boil the fuel .. the expanding fuel vapor pushes liquid fuel back to the fuel tank. what was weird.. i could get 20MPG with the 1600 engine.. with the corvair 110 and the power glide i could get 25MPG at 70 MPH.. it did top out at 92.. and that was a bummer.. but who is crazy enough to drive a transporter faster than 92 mph..
What type of clutch update did he do. I had a 65 beetle that I would run in modified stock 1/4 mile, super modified vw engine. Kept blowing pressure plates and breaking clutch cables until I changed over to porsche clutch system and stainless aircraft cable.
Sounds like an awesome combo... I'd love a Syncro Vanagon/Westy if I could find one in decent shape. They're pretty damn rare now days, didn't make a whole lot of them to begin with.
Having overheating issues with my 2.5 DOHC in my 78 bus and using a dual setup like yours but it looks like your radiators are bigger and fan too! What did you use for fans and radiators?
