Video Details:
This week we test Acura's first all electric vehicle, the ZDX Type-S.
This is expected to be one Acura's most powerful vehicles, even besting its hybrid supercar, the NSX with over 544 lb-ft of torque. The Type-S is rated for 278 miles of range but its longer range single motor variant A-Spec will net you over 313 miles of range. This EV starts at just under $60,000 after incentives and climbs into the $70k price point in its highest trim. Borrowing GM's Ultium platform, the ZDX has near identical dimenstions to the Cadillac Lyriq, but it sets itself apart with a completely unique interior/exterior touches. We go behind the scenes with its Chief Engineer John Wong and also take the ZDX on a spin in this latest video. If they are releasing a brand new car when they knew now for a year that NACS will be the standard, why not integrate it into the new model? They had plenty of time.

Not only that, this is the only year they will be using GM's Ultium platform and batteries then the next year they will have their own. So, what happens 5-10 years later when it has run out of warranty? Who will service it? Will Honda still have those parts or will you have to go to a GM dealership to have it serviced? What effect will it have on resale value?

@@ctclardyThis vehicle will be all GM throughout this first generation. Honda is at least 4-5 years away from building their own batteries and EVs in North America.

That was just announced only a few months ago. Plus with the entire supercharger team being let go, that will only delay the transition even more.

@@bahamatodd You are wrong. Honda is going to only use the GM platform this model year and then get rid of the GM platform completely and use their own EV system the next model year and after. They have already announced it. You might want to do some research before you attempt to make informed comments.

Like it. we have a RDX right now with our tesla... ZDX is a little out of our price range at $85,000 Cdn for the base model (No rebates available)... I can buy a Long Range AWD Model Y for $63,990 and I get both provincial and federal rebates, knocking another $12K off the price...

Range will be as advertised as it has a 102kwh battery and it's basically the Lyric as mentioned. Nice but overall I still prefer the Y simply because of software. I wanted something other then a Y also but finally gave in due to the overall package.

The first Honda Pilot wasn’t a Honda at all it was an Isuzu with a Honda badge. This is Honda’s playbook for entering a new market. This seems like a Honda/Acura design other than the platform? The Honda and GM deal fell apart so their second generation will be all Honda if history repeats itself? I’m a Honda fan. I currently have a Pilot & Acura RDX. I was planning to trade in my Pilot for the Model Y refresh. Hopefully it’s out soon?

Interior is great and I love the real leather, the outside..that chrome accent on the rear looks like it came off a hearse. The vehicle overall looks like it’s as aerodynamic as a brick with a bit of rounded corners…

My one question I have for the people that “don’t want to be like their neighbors” and have the same car. Like, forget Tesla, what if whatever manufacturer comes out with a car, it’s basically perfect. It’s fast, it’s cheap, has tons of room, build quality is awesome, styling that somehow everyone loves equally..your telling me that since everyone owns one, you’d just be like “naw, I’ll take the really $$$ garbage that isn’t as good so I can be different.” Is that really the biggest issue? I just don’t think as many people care about “having the same car” as a lot of people. Like sure great, is it a good vehicle? Then who tf cares.

Exactly my thought too. Leather cracks after a while and you need to condition it. Artificial leather requires no maintenance (at least on black) and does not dry out or crack. I know which I prefer

Very nice video. Appreciate the review and perspectives. I just bought the Acura RDX A-spec and love it. They told me about the ZDX but not a fan of the GM base. I just think what will the future hold for this car and will resale drop through the floor more than most EV already. Acura interiors and quality in general are top spec as are most all Hondas. I am still out on the whole EV market. I own a Hyundai Ionic 5 and really like it but the one thing in many areas of the country is WINTER. Once we get cold EV's become a pain. Mileage drops to unacceptable levels. Resale also kills EV's. Time will tell but Manufacturers are going to have to push tech to get range and ensure we have the infrastructure to charge away from home.

I can’t get over the hearse appearance. Too many buttons, including that nuisance start/stop, inside resembling ICE. Charging per Kyle’s vid is awful. Only Acura lovers will buy it. There are so many other, better EVs on the market.

Agree with the comments about Tesla. Loved the cars. Had several of them for 9 years. But, as someone that typically want's something new and exciting every 2-3 years, was a testamite to Tesla that I drove basically the same looking car for NINE YEARS. With the release of the far more minimalist interiors though, they finally went over the limit for my personal use needs. I want a shifter stalk and blinker stalk and at least a couple of buttons, rather than having to get EVERYTHING from the screen. Between that and the fact that Tesla's still look nearly identical to what they did 12 years ago, with there now being COMPETITIVE options, finally moved on to something new. As much as I think Tesla builds the best EV on the planet, as much of the above is unlikely to change with them, I've likely owned my last Tesla. Just too many more interesting options now available. In my area in L.A. Tesla's are a dime a dozen. Love having something a little more unique and DRIVER friendly. Tesla is on the path to driverless cars. For now though, we still have to drive them and I want driver friendly functions that they lack.

The Tesla model Y just like all the rest of the Teslas have instant access to the Tesla supercharger network. The Acura ZDX like all of the other OTM platform BEV’s are stuck with credits for EVgo. Depending upon where you go, EVgo sucks. Here in New York City there aren’t very many chargers at all. I have to drive 10 miles to charge my car in Massapequa until the EVgo stations open up in Westbury. Most of them are slow. 150 kW charges. The new one in Westbury will be 350 kW.

F.A.I. L. There is nothing new engineering wise in this car and my 2009 Buick Enclave CXL. That means this model design was engineered 8-10 years ago. Other than the electric drive train, Acura is trying to sell an outdated car as a New Car. Total FAIL.

"Vegan" leather is actually an oil product. (check with Sandy Munro if you doubt it) So leather is not only more durable but *completely* organic and recyclable.

You need to plug in these cars every day. They need auto opening and closing charge port doors and NO plug insert that you have to deal with. You should be able to plug in with one hand quickly. Just copy Tesla. It’s already been figured out.

I’m moving away from Tesla because of their awful business practices. I don’t believe TeslaVision is the way forward for full autonomy. I fundamentally disagree with many of Tesla’s policies. They’ve become very Apple-like with the way they treat their customers (and employees) and I don’t want to condone that by giving them more money. I especially don’t agree with the 20% of layoffs, especially when they’re not even notifying employees they’re fired until they show up for work. The Cybertruck was a huge disappointment, making the decision to cancel my reservation and looking at the current EV truck options.
