First Flights in the Chinook Plus 2

My friend Owen and I recently purchased a plane. I have a private pilot's licence but I haven't flown in many years and Owen is just starting out. We've hired Jack a fantastic flight instructor so Owen can get his licence and to help me knock the rust off. Here is a quick video of our first flights in our new (to us) plane.
About the plane:
It's a Chinook Plus 2 with a two stroke 65hp liquid cooled Rotax 582 DCDI (dual carb, dual ignition) engine designed specifically for amateur built aircraft.
It takes off in about 200 feet (one occupant) and lands in about 400 feet. (I got it off the ground in 340 feet with the flight instructor with me and full fuel and we weren't even trying)
It cruises at 75 mph (120 km/h) and burns 3.5 gallons (13 litres) per hour. It carries 10 gallons (37 litres) of car gas giving it a range of just under 200 miles (300 kms).
It weighs 460 lbs empty and 525 lbs with full fuel and oil. It's gross (max take off) weight is 1050 lbs which means with full fuel, the plane will carry 525 lbs of pilot, passenger and cargo.
It's registered as an Advanced Ultralight. An Advanced UL as opposed to a Basic UL means that it has been built to the manufacturer's standards which meet Transport Canada's standards for this type. No modifications are allowed without the manufacturer's approval. This allows an appropriately licenced pilot to carry non-pilot passengers. A Basic UL can only carry passengers who already have a pilot's licence.

Hey, Steve, I remember that Weedhopper! In the summer of 1982, you let me give it a spin and the airspeed indicator froze up, giving me an unforgettable ride. Glad to hear you are back flying. Tom

You should do more of these opening mood shots!

The stall speed of my chinook is way higher than the manufacturer states. Air speed indicator is not the issue.

2:50, correct me if I'm wrong but aren't your wheels supposed to "touch" during a touch-and-go? Seriously though good video and a nice looking little aircraft. I'm looking at buying one myself.

That was the smoothest landing of the day! ;-) The instructor called this "cropdusting". Just a way to get used to the controls down low over the runway without being too close to the stall speed.

Another nice vid. I've been following your channel several months and really enjoy them. Question; if you have time....I live in North Carolina, and have accumulated 416 hrs, mostly in 1 seat ultralights, but have piloted 2 seat Quicksivers', Colb, Cessna, 150/172 w/GA pilots. Do you know what would be my easiest path to being able to legally pilot a 2 seat ultralight, LSA, or Experimental? I've been told I would need 'Sport pilot certificate', others have said 'LSA certificate'. Whether you know or respond, thanks for the consideration.

Sorry dude, I have no working knowledge of how the US aviation licensing system works. Good luck though!

Do you know who sells the Chinook or Beavers in Canada?? I would be interested in doing the assembly for a very good price. I have lots of experience, the time and place to complete the assembly. I am located in Barrie Ontario Canada. Thx

How much Weight can you take in it?

jeremypenuta With full fuel, 525 lbs. I thought I had listed that in the video description but I guess I didn't. I'll add it. Thanks! :-)

You've said (pretty much) that Chinooks aren't beginner friendly, would being longer and a bigger rudder help, or anything else?
@mmatt
@mmatt 4 года назад
The fact that it's a taildragger is the biggest issue. But yes, a longer and bigger tail would probably help.

mmatt is that why you like beaver better? I was thinking about getting a dr kit with the tall gear. I had no problems getting my tail dragger in a cub. Would you prefer the tall gear, given the chance? What about on skis?

I like the Beaver better for a number of reasons but the Chinook is great plane too. If you can handle a taildragger, and it sounds like you can, you should totally get one with the new DR gear. :-)

Looks like fun.. but damn.. that thing probably weighs less than the one of the landing gear in what I was flying! (F-5/F-15/T-38/F-18)

Kindanyume .Kindanyume It weighs 460 lbs empty. So you're probably right. lol

mmatt Well quick math there says a T-38 (lightest of those I was flying) is 15.6+ X the weight empty LOL (F-15 is easily aprox 61x the weight) Just a wee bit of a difference in weight (and performance obviously)

I fly and tow gliders that weight more than that ultra light.
