Owen and I take the Chinook out on a typical fall day in New Brunswick. We practice some stalls and some take offs and landings - both on and off runway.

Great walkthru of what you should do to understand your aircraft's performance limits!

I have looked at this little plane for some time now...... The new one with a 912 and D.R.'s new gear on it looks like my future build....... nice ride along....👍👍👍.

This was great fun to watch with you and Owen. Not instructional but still very informative. Keep up the video posts Mr.Matt. :)

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. It wasn't meant to be instructional for the viewer, just for Owen. I actually think it's kind of irresponsible to provide instruction for this type of thing online. It might give someone a false sense of confidence and they might try it on their own without proper instruction (which I feel can only be done properly one-on-one with this type of activity) and get hurt.

I’ve got a Cub and a 1959 Straight tail 172 but darn it I want to fly a Chinook.

Had a Kitfox II for 5 years. Used to fly it to model airplane fields ( if invited of course). This looks like even more fun. With the Kitfox I could open the doors, however.

Great vid in 98 I owned a single place Chinook WT11 Rotax 277. A partner on a second one..lol I loved flying it just loads of simple fun. Especially doors off so I have an Avid speedwing now. Its got a 582 and also a whole lotta fun. Doors open.

If willing, give me your thoughts on the chinook. Been looking for the right plane to make my own, I’m stuck between a chinook and a skyraider. I have owned a phantomx1 and an Aventura UL. Really want something STOL worthy. After some customization of course.. appreciate any info

The Chinook is a rugged and STOL capable plane. Search up Dan Reynolds Chinook if you haven't already.

Just ran across this. Nice handling Ultra. Is it a 582 Blue head that you are running? Also looks like wing hung tanks?
@mmatt
@mmatt 7 лет назад
Yes, it is a 582 Blue Head, and yes, it has two 5 gallon external wing tanks. No need for a fuel gauge! :-)

Ok is that plane an ultralight? If so if one was to take out the second seat could it be flown by someone without a license???
@mmatt
@mmatt 3 года назад
It's considered an ultralight in Canada... but not in the US even if you took out one seat.

Interesting, do your gauges say engine rpm not propeller rpm?
@mmatt
@mmatt 8 лет назад
+Justin De Rooy Yes, engine RPM not prop RPM. Most engines that power light recreational aircraft are geared down. Our gearbox is around 2.5:1. The redline on this engine is almost 7000 RPM.
@justinderooy
@justinderooy 8 лет назад
+mmatt Interesting, I have flown Rotax geared engines and they had a prop rpm but that was probably because we were running constant speed props.
@mmatt

+Justin De Rooy Makes sense. I flew an early version of the Diamond Katana a few years back. It was powered by a Rotax 912 with a constant speed prop and if I remember correctly, it displayed prop RPM as well, not engine RPM.

Wow. I must say that I think I would have peed in the aircraft if I was going up in something that small. You Canadians are brave...or nuts.

Did you know the farmer whose field you peed in? or do you just land in any decent looking field?
@mmatt
@mmatt 5 лет назад
Ha ha! I don't know him personally but we only land on airplane friendly properties. There are enough local pilots that collectively, we know almost everyone who is ok with us on their property.
