Let's start a big journey through the Post-Soviet space. Almaty is a former capital of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. Almaty city is a current financial, scientific, cultural, historical and industrial center of the country with nearly 2 million inhabitants, it is also Kazakhstan’s largest city and the one most visited by tourists. Almaty is located in a seismically active zone, and I just arrived there and my adventures started right away...
Time codes:
00:00 Hi, I'm Eli! Let's explore the Post-Soviet space together
01:00 My first day in Kazakhstan starts with... an earthquake
02:26 Let's go to a safe place then... Almaty underground
03:12 Moscow station in Almaty
04:20 Soviet heritage in Almaty... was removed to a special place in the city
05:50 What is this city about? Let's ask a local musician
08:20 Traditional throat singing
10:36 Soviet bath house experience
11:57 Let's explore a bit outside of Almaty
12:50 Traditional Kazakh drink: horse milk!
13:12 Is Kazakhstan a very conservative country?
15:40 Russian language in Kazakhstan
16:30 Will Kazakhs understand me if I speak Tatar?
17:53 Time for Kazakh food

I lived in Almaty for two years with my family. I’m an American teacher at an international school. My wife is Kazakh and I met her when I taught in Atyrau, Kazakhstan for five years. We got transferred to Benin, Africa and we really miss Almaty’s beautiful & distinct Four Seasons down here in the eternal summer of West Africa! However we are returning to Central Asia in August 2024- this time to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan!

@@kuriyamatidusflossy No, Inuits are not Turkic. I am Mongol and I live in Canada, Montreal. Inuits are paleo-Asian Arctic indigenous people as well. @@traumvonhaiti When tsars ruled Russia, kazakhstan did not exist. Go to any library in Western Europe and look up the world maps published before 1936. You will not find any kazakhstan on those maps because it did not exist. It was invented by bolsheviks after the 1917 bolshevik coup sponsored by the West. Kazakhs were nomads and were migrating around with their sheep and yurtas (wigwams). About 75 percent of the territory of today's kazakhstan is the territory of the Dzungar khanate. Dzungars were involved in two wars at the same time: with China and tuberculosis. They lost both wars and became extinct. Their territories were taken by the Russians. If the Russians did not take these territories, then China would have taken them. In any scenario, the territories would never become the property of kazakhs, who did not have a chance to stand against China. Nowadays, kazakhs can exist on these territories only under the military and diplomatic protection of Russia. Should Russia take the protection away, China will swallow you, kazakhs, in a blink of an eye. Eleven million kazakhs against one billion of Chinese. But again, you, kazakhs, will be erased by China, so that your falsifications of history will not last for long. The future is decided. There was a US-made documentary released several years ago, in which the Americans forecasted China taking over kazakhstan by year 2050, and the West will do nothing to help kazakhs. Hi Eli! Your trip to Kazakhstan was very beautiful, it's just a shame that you found yourself at a time when there were earthquakes. It is a country with deep cultural roots that still maintains people who have inhabited it since time immemorial. Soviet culture is also very deep-rooted, like every part of Russia and the former nations that belonged to the USSR. Even in the people you interviewed, you can sense in them a deep traditional culture to which they are linked and they still live their lives based on it today and I think it is good that they are linked to this tradition of theirs and that they never abandon it. I really like the song which was originally the song of the Kazakh warriors which today is an artistic song which, in my opinion, should be popular all over the world. Your videos cannot miss a small representation of traditional local food which, in the case of Kazakhs, must be so tasty that it is worth eating on a trip to Kazakhstan. As always, you bring us to know places we don't know and with the vision of a few minutes, a viewer imagines that there is a whole world to discover, therefore, let's visit Kazakhstan. 😃😁 Thank you for this content, I greet you and hug you. 😊

Of all the RU-vidrs I watch, you are the most anticipated Eli. You bring us so much great content and you make me realize our worlds are not so far apart. Thanks to you I’ve seen things I’ll never get to see in person. The only thing that gets me….COLD….everywhere you go it looks like it’s freezing..Brrrr. I wish our politicians weren’t such dorks. What I see is we’re all the same, people just looking for comfortable lives. Could you imagine if we were allies and not enemies. Thank You for all you do.

i honestly think that Kazakhstan is a fascinating destination that offers a blend of natural beauty, rich culture, and modern development. Traveling to Kazakhstan allows you to explore diverse landscapes, from the vast steppes and deserts to the stunning mountains and lakes. Key highlights include the futuristic capital city of Astana (now Nur-Sultan), the cultural hub of Almaty, and historical sites like the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. The warm hospitality of the Kazakh people and their unique traditions, such as eagle hunting and traditional yurts, add to the charm of visiting this Central Asian country.

Hey Eli. Another wonderful & informative video. You never get used to earthquakes. We've had some big shakes in my country New Zealand the past 13 years. Three major ones demolishing buildings & landscapes, they were never a thing until 2010! Occasionally since we get reminders with sudden jolts & rolling shakes. We don't get out of bed for anything less than a 5.0 🙂

@0807, with the talk of archery and horse-riding being in their blood - and the Asiatic appearance of most of the people spoken to so far - I am forming the distinct impression that Kazakhs were well represented in the all-conquering Mongol Horde of Genghis Khan which nearly gave Europe heart-failure at the time and nightmares for centuries afterwards. In any case, I am viewing this vlog with greater than normal interest as I recently saw another one on Kazakhstan which caused me to put it to the top of my list for a visit at some point in the next two years. It just seems a cool place with well-appointed cities which seem minutes away from unspoilt wilderness of at least the same quality as the Rocky Mountains, the Grand Canyon, and Yellowstone Park. Good call as the starting point for the big journey through Post-Soviet space. 👍

Throat singing is not a traditional Kazakh art. These Kazakhs and Turkish are nowadays aggressively claiming Mongolian indigenous art as their own! Very unethical....!!!! His explanations about throat singing is totally false. Throat singing was not shamanistic music at all. In recent years, these Turkic people including Kazakhs, Tatars, and Turkish are inventing false stories and claiming our indigenous Mongolian art as their own. This Tatar Russian woman named Eli or whatever she calls her name is purposefully propagating such false stories, as she is Tatar herself. Turkic people are extremely unethical and territorially aggressive!!!! As a Mongol, I feel disgusted with these Turkic people!!!
