When the United States elects a new president, they are often also voting for their spouse. But 11 first ladies were not the wives but the daughters, sisters, or other relatives of the commander in chief. The unelected, unpaid white house hostesses have the considerable duty of smoothing the way for diplomacy, preserving white house history, and influencing the nation as fashion icons, social activists and arbitrates of change. Some have had major influence on policy in a nation where women are still underrepresented in government. In this 6 part series we'll meet the 53 fascinating women who have served as first lady of the United States of America and see how the role has evolved over the past 250 years.

I really enjoyed this series. however, I will add one thing, Jill Biden is the 1st to have a PhD, but not the first to have a doctoral level degree. Both Hilary Clinton and Michelle Obama had Juris Doctorate degrees. They do not use the title Doctor, but they are of a doctoral level. Thank you for spotlighting these amazing women!

I admire the effort Lindsay put into this. Highly interesting, highly educational and just perfect to enjoy. I know, I know, but I MUST say this: as a historian I really enjoyed the whole series. Given the time format you chose, you gave as much info, entertainment and "tea" as you possibly could. I would show this in class, hands down. I really appreciate the entire channel, but this series was interesting even for me, a non-american (yet green card owner) who lives in Europe. This gets a triple A grade from me. You'd pass my class with flying colours. Well done, Miss Lindsay! It's not only interesting to history buffs, feminists or people interested in politics, but also to pretty much everyone who can enjoy this content. Amazing! Well done! Perfect!

I have respect for Laura Bush. She did not like abortion so instead of just outlawing it, she educated people on saftey so they wouldn’t have to get them. THAT is how you stop people from needing abortions. I’m pro choice, and I think that that was an intelligent move.
@ashleydixon4613
@ashleydixon4613 Год назад
That’s the same point Hillary Clinton tried to make during her time representing New York in the Senate- and of course got nowhere because the other side wouldn’t budge an inch. She said the same thing as Laura Bush was trying to say: trying to point out to her fellow senators that despite their differences of opinion on the legality of abortion, they could all agree (or so she thought) it would be good to work toward a decrease in the numbers of unwanted pregnancies to begin with, therefore lowering abortion rates. But of course when it came down to it, the other side, to this day, continues to teach - excuse me: preach-nothing but abstinence, and gives no real sex Ed, when it comes to safer sex practices and basically teaching anything useful along those terms, besides the anatomy/physiology of it and the basics of how babies are made-along with the abstinence only mantra, of course. Because, of course, we know how effective that is. 🤦🏻‍♀️

@Alex you are not the only one. I am a Black American, and know very little about Juneteenth. I think it was the day that word FINALLY came to the former slaves that they were no longer slaves and immediately stopped working. ANYONE who has much better knowledge of the holiday please correct me if I got anything wrong. But I live in Oklahoma so I had no idea about this day until maybe this past year or so give or take. So maybe those of us who don't live in Texas won't really know too much of anything about it 🤷. But it would be cool to have Lindsey cover it in a future video next year ❤! I always felt really sorry for Hillary Clinton. I recently watched Impeachment: An American Crime Story and it really made me sympathise with her. She was taken for a fool by her own husband. She was in a situation where she was damned if she did and damned if she didn't. For standing by him she looked like a naïve, foolish pushover and if she had divorced him she would be tainted as bitter and angry. She is too good for Bill.
@stephfahey1101

She's not a saint either though. She's flimsy at best. Her personality is atrocious. The decisions she made in her own political career has also detracted from her chances of winning. @lucypreece7581
@lucypreece7581 Год назад
@@ellcally508 But she is an educated and determined woman. I feel she would have made it on her own without Bill. I feel she is the kind of woman who is stubborn enough and fierce enough to stand her ground and go after what she wants. So her staying with Bill makes her look foolish and dumb. In the divorce she had the prime opportunity to get stuff she wanted. Money, contacts, property. Something she could use for herself to build on. But she knew that in divorcing him and exposing everything she would look like the bitter, rage filled ex wife who hated seeing her husband be successful and hated seeing him with a younger woman. It's simple misogyny. Staying made her look naïve and foolish, leaving would have tarnished her as a crazy bitter ex. She had no way of winning in the court of public opinion.
@melicat6652
@melicat6652 Год назад
@@lucypreece7581 I agree with everything you said and I'd take it a step further to say that misogyny was also what worked against her presidential campaign. For some reason she was disliked for being too prepared, too qualified, too ambitious, and too steady--whereas all of those qualities in a man are highly praised. Once again she was literally damned if she did and damned if she didn't. I can only imagine how much better we all would have fared if her ambition and qualifications hadn't worked against her.

I always have to take exception with the statement that Jill Biden was the first First Lady to work while her husband was in office. Hillary Clinton was elected a US senator from New York, and as the Congress gets sworn in at the beginning of January and the President on January 20, she spent about 2-3 weeks as both a Senator and First Lady, going between the White House and her office at the Congress each day. Love her or hate her, being a US senator is a job by anybody's definition, so Hillary was fulltime employed and working while First Lady and this should make her the first to have this title. Dr. Biden should be commended for her dedication to teaching, of course, especially considering the woman who came before her never even finished college.

This entire series was just an extremely fascinating thing to listen to. Getting to listen to the stories of the woman behind what would eventually become the most important leader of the world was eye opening. So many of things that they did, could easily be made into movies or shows honestly. It was genuinely refreshing though to hear about the older ones being able to live relatively long lives compared to the Royal Families at the time. So often it felt like we were hearing stories of them dying during child birth, being passed around to secure alliances, or problems due to incest. It was nice to hear these ones

Betty's first marriage ended because of the lack of stability, his constantly moving from place to place, his frequent absences from home due to work, and lastly, his alcoholism. There's no indication that he was abusive. In fact, she filed for divorce, which was put on hold when her husband became gravely ill. The then Mrs. Warren slept in a separate room in the house, continued nursing her husband back to health, reinitiating divorce proceedings only after he recovered. They were friends and had an amicable divorce but were just not compatible with each other. Both later happily remarried new spouses.

Yes, I guess I felt entitled for some elaboration, so I looked into it myself. The victim's name was Michael Dutton Douglas. He was a star athlete, by the way. His father was driving behind him when it happened, saw the whole thing. Apparently Laura was known for reckless driving and there may have been alcohol involved. She prayed for Michael's life in the emergency room. Her friends noticed an immediate and permanent personality change. She later wrote that she lost her faith in God for years after the crash. Her husband used his connections to hide the story for years. It haunted her for the rest of her life.
