First Live Steam test of my 5 inch gauge 9F locomotive on the rolling road in the workshop

My 9F locomotive was a Winson Engineeirng 5 inch gauge 9F kit built engine, the loco has had two owners before me but has not run a great deal and is essentially new. Having had some work done before I bought it to the cylinders, a known issue with the original kits the locomotive has never had the shake down runs it needs. I am working through a number of issues but is getting there, see my other videos on the 9F as I work through developing the locomotive as a reliable and powerful performer.

Great job! Its like a new baby being born. It is new life, a new being with its own personality and it must grow and learn. And must crawl before it walks. So therefore you must teach it. And tke care of and love it. Which im sure you do very much. After all its part of you. So congratulations on the birth of your new baby. Im sure it will have a very long and fulfilling life!!

@tonydewey3023 Thanks Tony, full disclosure I did not build this one but am building a 5 inch Manor, similar size wise and that's taken 3 years so far. Also must have spent 30+hours on this easily since purchase just sorting things out, they are resource sponges but very worthwhile ones I think!

What an absolute beauty. everything in life needs a tweak. You will get it right.. Even the great Fred had a port problem which with a few burs it was fixed. People like to say they know best. In the end it’s al fixable and so well done…

@MrAsBBB Thanks Mr A! In fact that is what I did do, sounds much more even now. Have been working on some improvements on her so need to get a video up again soon.

I bet the people who thumb this down are the "experts" who claim to know everything about operating a steam loco, but have never actually done so in any capacity. Lovely engine there pal

Thanks Joel, you do get a fair amount of that sort of thing in this and most hobbies as I'm sure you already know. I just like being a part of the hobby and make my own mind up about people and their level of "knowledge". Just keep learning and improving is the key.

I remember my 7.25 in 14xx class tank sounded exactly the same as your when first run valve timing and tight bearings in the rods but after much running things did get better
@garybrown593
@garybrown593 Месяц назад
That's partly what has happened with this one, it's had pistons, valves and liners all made in cast iron and was not the previous owners "go to" loco so had not run a great deal.. see her running around the track etc in my other videos for the changes

Valve timing is out and probably the porting as well.

All checked OK, it was the die blocks and a bit of adjustment to the valves has got it alot closer.

That is awesome, but I have no idea where you got men’s small enough to shovel coal into that thing and drive it tell the Stewart I would like a cappuccino.
@warrenkarlsson7091
@warrenkarlsson7091 2 месяца назад
would the unsupported driving wheels not be adding to the load by having more friction due to the difference in height to the supported wheels?
@garybrown593
@garybrown593 2 месяца назад
No not much, it was more to do with the die blocks clearances combined with the fact the loco probably had not run for sometime. I do now have rolling roads for all the driving wheels just so they are all supported, see the other videos for the runs post rework.

Bonjour Gary, très belle locomotive. Toutefois, je trouve que le mouvement des roues motrices n'est pas très fluide. Est-ce dû à un problème de calibration du tiroir de distribution ?
@garybrown593
@garybrown593 2 месяца назад
Hi Alexandre, well picked up, essentially the loco had an issue with the steam valves, this has been corrected and sound better in my other video. Thanks for commenting

Yes mine got better when run in but I didn’t have piston valves but the square siding type which run in better than piston valves I have a GWR king in 7.25 gauge with piston valves it leak like a anything hope it get better when run in my mate that built engines over night told me to put metal polish in with the oil on a new engine not sure about that

Thanks, I didn't know there was such a thing as a rolling road (rolling track) for a steam locomotive. Is it an off the shelf part or did you devise it yourself?

They are common accessories for those of us who run little steam locos. I have two - one set for each 16mm gauge of 32 and 45mm for my little steamers. Electric locos also run, with suitable power input.

@garybrown593 2 месяца назад
Hello, it turned out is was not pumping correctly, put a walk around video up after some repair work. The loco should have two lubricators but will need a strip down to fit. It's OK for now if you keep an eye on it!
