Agreed on the wiring for the pickup combinations on the San Dimas. I love the San Dimas, but I always redo the electronics on these guitars to use a 5-way superswitch - bridge HB, outside coils, both HB's, inner coils, neck HB. No push-pulls to mess with that way, either.
Great production. The audio is good. The lighting brings out and helps the color definition on the guitars. And, your intros are epic. Captain and Tennille!
@@FrankSpeer66 oh brother! It's a great player, well mine is,straight out of the box. I'm not sure if that's normal since fender took ownership of EVH? But that neck is perfect, fast and the edges are perfectly rolled.hope you have as much fun with it as I am.👍🤘🎸
@@heavybrett-al4082 thanks man! I'm looking forward to it. I have owned a standard before and it was awesome, looking forward to the gold sparkle version!
@@FrankSpeer66 this is my first EVH,wanted one as a kid in the early nineties, but always out of reach, now I'm in my mid 40's I thought 🤔just get one while you can🤪and so glad I did, just that roasted neck is worth the price of admission.
Charvels have the most comfortable necks. I don't have one yet, but ever one I've played has been a dream (maple at least, I did not like the rosewood one I tried at all). The 'six pack of sound' with the 2 humbuckers is also astoundingly versatile. The middle position alone is amazing.
@@ramjam6934 yes, I would say it can cover all music types, not just metal. Pickups are nice. Just the flatter radius neck that takes some getting used too.
The D-Tuna works a lot better than in this video - Pete doesn't know that you need to depress the switch slightly, then pull back. It's a great mechanism.
The Charvel flip-flop finish is done by putting on the first coat as a plain flat solid color. Next put the sparkles (mica) coloured differently on each side into a tinted clear and spray that. Then for the final coat spray on a high gloss clear.
@@kirkhunter146 The term is used for both. Perhaps the first use of the term is abalone since it is a decades old finish but at the shop both the painter and the customers used the term. Mica was much more popular because the colors could be very specific. We did a lot of cars. Bikers prefered to bring their things in parts.
I had a Wolfgang and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. I bought one of the 5150's. Went 3 decades without a Charvel or Jackson and bought two in a week. I love a Fender Strat...but I love their other offerings just as much!
Pete was right about the width of the necks. Looking at the Charvel and EVH websites, the EVH guitars all have 1.6875" (42.86mm) nut width where the Charvels both have 1.625" (41.275mm) nut width. So he felt a 1.6mm difference (thereabouts) which is pretty impressive.
Agghh Pete, love you man, you are a fantastic player. But the EVH Floyd only drops pitch. To use the D-tuna push down the knurled peg gently against the Floyd finger spring and slide it back. Push down slightly and push back in for D.😁
I just bought a new guitar (Squier Contemporary Tele) and now you guys made me want to buy another one already...i will tell my wife its you fault! That EVH is AWESOME!!!!
Brian May's Red Special was the first 24 fret guitar built to rock way back in 1962. Tony Iommi followed suit in 1975 with a John Birch SG. Then of course Steve Vai made it normal with the Ibanez Jem.
Yep, also strangely enough rickenbackers usually have 24 frets on them too. Though I've never seen one played much up that end of the neck. Would be interesting to see though. Apparently the necks are really narrow right up the neck making it really cramped up the top.
Captain, San Dimas is a town probably about 45 minutes east of Los Angeles. It was made famous by Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. San Dimas High School football rules!!!!
I remember about 20 years ago when OLP made some copies of the Wolfgang and it was so good they made them quit making it. Pretty sure it was the best sub $300 guitar ever made.
I feel like Charvel having the HSH configuration is meant to be more versatile for studio work. Like, yeah, you'll probably set your live rig EQ and use only the bridge and neck, but in the studio, you have time and opportunity to mess around with amp settings. Also, you may EQ the clean channel of an amp for the middle single coil, if thats the clean tone you're going for. Then, EQ the gain channel(s) for the bridge and neck positions.
@@theAxehound it really depends on the amp, the pickup, and what sound you're trying to achieve. I'm guessing yours is a Dimarzio True Velvet? I only used that pickup with either the bridge or neck in positions 2 and 4 on my HSH RGs. I used a EVH 5150iii and run the EQ on the clean channel at: Gain- 3-4 Volume- 6 Bass- 6 Mid- 5 Treble-4 I leave the global presence set to 7 and resonance at about 11 o'clock because that's how I like it for the gain channels. Those settings on that amp get me a really nice clean tone. You can gradually bump up the gain to thicken it up or add a little breakup.
That purple ish charvel looks good with the white pickups. I have the deep metallic purple pro San Dimas charvel but it has black pick ups and plates which works on that one because it's a darker purple.
I believe Vai was the first to request 24 frets when he was helping Ibanez design the JEM/RG in the late 80s and then it became like the standard for superstrats from then on.
After all this time we finally see something that Pete can't do; use a kill switch. Perhaps watching a few hours of Buckethead would help. Thanks for the video, guys!
Hello) sometimes when Captain and Pete do a rewiev on some of a kind superstrat ( especially from 80s roots like Ibanez or Charvell) we often hear disliking point about not balanced pickup - for example so bridge is maybe twice time hotter than neck or in other case than a split coil middle position... maybe because youre guys more fans of a vintage instruments or vintage-inspired - for example as we all know 50s strat has a 3 same singles so they kinda well balanced, i don't want to waste your time and write a tonn of text, I think you know what i mean. So - "superstrats and unbalanced pickups" - imagine a guitar player who is playing thru a cranked one channel amp without any pedal - what he has and want the guitar that can make a dirt and clean sound... so you can just switch to a bridge and has a thunderous power or switch to a twice less hotter neck pickup or a middle coil split (defending on preference) to has a cleans with just lighter touch on strings by hand... not touching the volume pots that can became a noisy on tour, and every rotation of that pot with a cranked amp ..it's a unforgettable feeling))... So what I want to say - maybe there is a reason for that unbalanced thing, legacy and market))) Cheers!
I went and played both a evh 5150 and a Jackson soloist in store, I know it’s unrelated but I didn’t personally like the neck of the 5150 I felt it was too thick and round as opposed to the flat Jackson neck. But I must say I love the unfinished necks the feel super smooth highly recommend(i ended up buying the Jackson lol)
My EVH USA (lefty!) has a floating Floyd rose trem, but I chose to flush it back to the body to get a bit of connection to the body for tone like Ed did. Not sure if the standard is different or if it’s just the set up. And yes, it’s a brilliant guitar.
I’m not one for tons of switching options, but playing devil’s advocate, you can’t just assume that all songs in a set or even all portions of a song require the same tonal setting. Middle position single coils are extremely useful in a band situation. You also have volume and tone controls on a guitar for a reason.
I honestly don’t care about “tonal impact” of the neck plate I’ve just always thought that raised relief style plate looks cool and distinctive. Others have used it Jackson obviously and Washburn, foxxe, Barrington just looks cool and a step above. It’s subjective but that’s my take.
Those EVH Wolfgang standards are RIDIC for the money ..... how in the blue hell they can put THAT much guitar together for that RRP is just insane ?!?!?!?!?
I was so excited thinking they finally brought back the black cherry metallic color of my old Model 4. That's how it looks in the video. Nope! It's some color changing nonsense. Bummer!! Thanks for the demo.
I once bought a black Les Paul and when I brought it back home and checked it out in the sun light it revealed to me that it was black cherry metallic.
Incredible. All these guitars sound bad to me. The Charvel single coil issue is due to volume pot values - 500k makes singles sound too bright - they need 250k. They should use two different pots and blend like Gibson...
🤣🤣🤣🤣 It's almost easier to "hear the stuff" if Danish Pete plays as he usually does when I'm trying to evaluate a guitar... Same goes for Lee. Fun stuff though 😁❤️
For the love of god, can EVH actually do a burst / poplar with a maple fretboard 5150? All their dark fretboard have cool colours but every single maple fretboard variant are so plain and boring. I currently have a tobacco burst San dimas with maple fretboard. If Charvel can do it, EVH can too. I'm still waiting for such a model before I get an EVH.
I Had a HSS telecaster which had a really versitile tonal pallete, but I got rid of it for the same reason. I'd rather have a good les paul and a strat that do a certain sounds really well.
