First look at the WaveR8 Waverex card for the Roland R8 drummachine

Hi,
In this video I want to show you something very interesting for the Roland R8 drummachine: The WaveR8 Sample Expansion card that allows you to use your own WAV samples and have them played by the Roland R8!
This card is a Waverex release and it comes with some cool drumkits such as the epic Roland 808, 909, the Linndrum and so on.
In this video we'll go over the software that comes with the card and we also are going to listen to some of the sounds provided by Waverex themselves.

The Roland R8 had one of the best sequencers (and a proper song mode!) even to this day. The sequencer is 96 ppqn, with groove templates (called human feel). This was super advanced in 1989, actually nothing is better today! This card definately modernises the R8 to some degree, although the amount of memory is no doubt a bit small by modern standards!

Do these cards work for the R8M without having to upgrade the firmware (which I believe is a hardware upgrade?)?

this is great thank you, i just bought one r8 and i am waiting for it in the mail. and now i just discovered this. By the way i have one question: once you load up the card and start to create, is it possible to use at the same time sounds from the card and the stock sounds from internal memory?

Thanks for the video and demonstration. I find the Waverex cards are a very good idea and it would be even better if the samples could be allocated to their instrument location on Waverex's software, not on the R8. But the price is much too high to be of interest. You can get an R8 or an original Roland sound card for half the price of a WaveRex card. They are simply way too expensive in my opinion... Especially that hardware drum machines are a thing of the past now.

Hey Lee and thanks for stepping by man. Apteciated. Well, about hardware or vst's or samples there is a lot to discuss about. Also about vintage gear and new gear. Just pick something that works for you and focus on that. I must admit that most of the time? I just use drumsamples that I bought from a decent company. And those samples get the job done. But from time to time I like working with a machine like the R8. It's just the state of mind I'm in for that moment. Cheers and have a nice day!

I just wrote to your company that the micro USB will not last 3 years with frequent use, and then they will send those in recalls back to you ! My recommendation is to redesign to use USB-C and that it can be put in that socket both ways ! (Micro USB it very tedious to insert cable without looking at the position of the socket !! For $200 dollars I want a product that lasts at least 15 years !

hallo NTRSN heb je op deze vraag ook nog ergens een antwoord gekregen? Ik heb de Feel Patches ingesteld op een manier die samples van bijv. Mallet Card verstemd. Zo heb ik 8 "scales" die ik zowel in Pattern Play mode als Song PLAY MODE door via midi kan oproepen. De jazzbas op Brushes en de synthbas op (Electronic), alles werkt er goed mee. Ik zou ook wel willen weten of er zelf gesamplede NIET percusieve geluiden te laden zijn, de genoemde samplelengte (2 sec?) zou dat volgens mij ook wel toelaten?

@@jairkerker2821 dank je voor je feedback, jij gebruikt de card? Betekend jouw antwoord ook dat alle bestaande functies volledig werken? (8 Feel Patches, de 4 performance instellingen, etc)

@@henkwstegeman7935 Ik gebruik de card niet, te duur (alhoewel de originele electronic drums card nu voor €200 wordt verkocht op reverb, auw). Er is simpelweg geen verschil tussen een drum- of een ander geluid, wave is wave. Of de 4 functies ook werken is mij onbekend. Helaas is daar niks over te vinden op de site van de makers. Ze verkopen een kaart met Lindrum samples en het zou wel zonde zijn als die functies niet zouden werken, zoals op de Lindrum zelf. Misschien is de Behringer LMDrum een goed alternatief?
