It looks like the MC-80 lost the tape sync feature. The MC-50 from 1990 has that, which is nice. The Realtime Phrase Sequencing (RPC) and Arpeggio is interesting. Can you drag and drop *.MID files onto the MC-80 floppy disc from a computer?
My pads play both the kick and the note from my synth at the same time/layered.Do I need to clear the banks first of all the drum set to the pads? 🫠 Thanks for the videos, they’re great.
Hey @tacuches and thanks for your question. You don't need to clear the banks but have to make sure that your drumpart is being played by, for example, bank A and the sequence for your synth by bank B. You can assing the outputs of Bank A in the menu of the R8 to the main outputs while all other banks are routed to another, not connected output. It's been a while since I've worked with the R8 but I think this way you will get it to work. Thanks for the compliment and have a nice one!
this is great thank you, i just bought one r8 and i am waiting for it in the mail. and now i just discovered this. By the way i have one question: once you load up the card and start to create, is it possible to use at the same time sounds from the card and the stock sounds from internal memory?
Excelent!. Never knew aboyt this card. It´s always great when someome creates a product like this, that keeps alive and enhances our old gear. Thanks for sharing. Have a good 2.024. My best regards.
Great video! I slways have been interested in the mc80, but whent down the mpc (2000xl) path. Have you ever used an mpc and if so, how would you compare the two? I would use the mpc as a drum sampler and midi sequencer in pattern mode only for live electro work. I love the track mute / sequence select on the mpc. Would an mc80 be a worthy replacemeng for an mpc?
No, I am afraid not. The Mc-80 is a sequencer and not a sampler. Given the fact that you can easily program 'beats' on the Akai using the pads makes it more versatile than the Roland. Thanks for stepping by!
@@vainsacrosanct2014 Thanks for the reply! True about the sampler part, mostly curious about the sequencing and using the MC80 as a loop sequencer. If I ever run into one I'll give it a try 🙂
i dont see no point in hooking the mc 80 to ur computer unless you have to sync vsts or samples. how did you use with your computer. the micro composer is kinda made not using the PC innit?
Thanks! Gracias! I love the R8, m'y first and now only rythm machine in 20 years. Now a quest for everybody: how to fix everything to send program changes to the R8 from ableton live (via MIDI of course) to Switch between patterns in the R8 using the session and clips in Live. ...Do I explain myself? It must be easy, I just need some enlightment.
Hello. I have a question: do you know if it is possible to use a VST from a computer as a sound module for the MC-80 by means of any device like the dual interface that you show on the video? I have a handful of VSTs in my computer (Korg M1, Roland D50...) but I don't if I can use them as sound modules for the MC-80.
Hello José and thanks for your interesting question. I think it is possible, yes. You need to use one of the midi outputs of the MC-80 and connect it with your computer. Then have the midi set up in your daw trough a vst instance. I think you also need to set up the vst itself so that the correct instrument is responding to the midi notes/information coming from the mc-80. Hope this gets you going. Have a nice weekend! Cheers!
I think you can. It's been a while since I used it but I think you need to program a song or pattern on, say midi channel 1 as an output using the internal sounds and on another midi channel you need to program another song or pattern on a different midi channel. This midi channel then can bu used to trigger external hardware when it has been set to the same midi channel.
Groetjes!
I just wrote to your company that the micro USB will not last 3 years with frequent use, and then they will send those in recalls back to you ! My recommendation is to redesign to use USB-C and that it can be put in that socket both ways ! (Micro USB it very tedious to insert cable without looking at the position of the socket !! For $200 dollars I want a product that lasts at least 15 years !
Thanks for the video and demonstration. I find the Waverex cards are a very good idea and it would be even better if the samples could be allocated to their instrument location on Waverex's software, not on the R8. But the price is much too high to be of interest. You can get an R8 or an original Roland sound card for half the price of a WaveRex card. They are simply way too expensive in my opinion... Especially that hardware drum machines are a thing of the past now.
Hey Lee and thanks for stepping by man. Apteciated. Well, about hardware or vst's or samples there is a lot to discuss about. Also about vintage gear and new gear. Just pick something that works for you and focus on that. I must admit that most of the time? I just use drumsamples that I bought from a decent company. And those samples get the job done. But from time to time I like working with a machine like the R8. It's just the state of mind I'm in for that moment. Cheers and have a nice day!
Hello again, do you know where can I get a compatible Hard drive for my MC 80 and also do you have any experience with now called USB floppy drive? Thank you
Great video! I have just purchased an R8, and I am syncing it, like you to Cubase. However, after about 5 seconds of being locked to Cubase, it says Midi Overload and I have to restart. Why is it choking, and is there anything within Cubase I should do to limit how much data the Roland is getting? Thanks in advance.
Strange... Does this occur while sending midi data from Cubase to the R8? I only had it clocked with my Daw. The only thing cubase did was sending start and stop messages to the R8.
Hi Vain, I am having trouble using the Marco timing/Micro timing shift function on my R8-MKII. It should be the same on the R8-MKI according to the manual. I would greatly appreciate a video on those functions! The instructions in the manual don't seem to make sense for the Macro shift. For the Micro shift I don't hear any difference at all in the sound.
Hey Daniel, It is a sequencer. Not a sound module. However and as explained in the video an extra pcb was available which was the same as the Roland SC-80 pro. Unfortunately I do not have this card installed in my Mc-80. Cheers!
Would be great to go into more depth on how to record hardware drum machine. Are you triggering patterns from the MC-80 or recording individual drum hits into patterns?
I bought an MC300 secondhand back in 93 and a brand new XP10. Was all I ever needed back then. Only limitation was the XP10 polyphony. Still have the sequencer, still works too, so I might retrofit those USB drives and start using it again with a JV1080, just for giggles. Wish Roland would release a new hardware sequencer, nothing flash, apart from the storage option. No "groove" stuff or flashy pads just a straightforward sequencer like the MC range excelled at, with USB drag and drop so you could import DAW created midi tracks with ease and have a reliable stage rig without a laptop to worry about.
Indeed Lee. That would be awesome if Roland would release a modern sequencer with all those functions you mention. Thanks for watching my video. Cheers!
