Why so much noise in the medium-dark part of the image? I know is a compressed video by youtube, but with other cameras of the same price level you dont have so much noise even if the video is compressed. This camera seems to make much more noise than the sony dslr (a7r2 etc...), isn't true?
Really good review. Thanks a ton. I currently use Canon 5D Mark 3 with some L series Canon Lens, and planning to upgrade. Please help me choosing between these 2 options: 1. Sony PXW-FS5 =$5,599.00 or 2. Sony NEX-FS700R ($3,999.00) + Odyssey7Q+ with 7.7" Monitor & 256GB SSD ($2,295) = $6,294.00 Thanks
I really love the camera, but what I notice with so many films made with the FS5 is that it's lacking colour. Many films I've seen so far are really flat in color. Why?
+Ho Fai Chan Both the fs5 and the fs7 are amazing cameras, and when shooting with them for the most part they are very similar. They have very similar bodies, the largest difference being that the fs5 has a rear mounted viewfinder (which is not usable handheld/shoulder mounted) as apposed to the fs7 having a flip on magnifier/eye cup viewfinder which flips away from the monitor when you are not using it. useful handheld and when on a tripod The FS7 can shoot 650 MB/s 4k, while the FS5 only has 100 MB/s but there is little visual difference between the bitrates ESPECIALLY if you are uploading to the web, because websites add compression to the video anyway. Otherwise if they are ending up in the cinema it does make a bit of a difference The FS7 can record a maximum of 180 fps slowmotion until card space runs out at 1080p, and while the fs5 can do the same it can also record 240 fps in 10 seconds burst speed (Similar to the older fs700). Both cameras are good in low light, getting usable ISO at 6400 iso and above, So not a7s good but not bad compared to competing cinema cameras such as the Blackmagic line Hope this helps :) I would also suggest comparing them on B&H Fs7: www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=1082825&gclid=CjwKEAiA7MWyBRDpi5TFqqmm6hMSJAD6GLeAQdSd-9lc-Lc3uHLxVdutu69aoiHs_PzdG9H2IBfplBoCPt3w_wcB&is=REG&m=Y&Q=&A=details Fs5: www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=1185424&gclid=CjwKEAiA7MWyBRDpi5TFqqmm6hMSJAD6GLeACpgp8jH5gMkpOTiSGg7iHFHF9Mk6lopQ86bQOe2iPRoC-sbw_wcB&is=REG&m=Y&Q=&A=details
+BLU Builders League Unlimited The largest difference is the FS7 is configured for Cinema and the FS5 is configured for broadcast / REC709 type application. For one the 4K on the FS5 is 16:9 (broadcast standard) whereas the FS7 is DCI standard for cinema. The FS7 also has CINE EI mode meaning it acts like a film camera. In this mode, the FS7 will give you the most color information and dynamic range possible. The FS5 lacks this mode. The FS7 also as an Alexa mode which operators and DPs say match the Alexa look. The FS7 4K mode is also 10-bit 422 internal and up to 60fps whereas the FS5 is 8-bit 422 internal up to 30fps. Being more like a film camera, the FS7 supports LUTS as well, whereas the FS5 do not. Prores is also an option for the FS7 whereas the FS5 does not. The FS5 currently has issues with outputting to an external monitor when recording 4K internal, this would be an issue if you need an output for the focus puller, director, operator and client. The FS7 has no issue at all. And as mentioned above, the FS5 uses triggers to record slow motion above 60fps whereas the FS7 does not. The FS5 however has two memory card slots for relay recording or backup recording.
+raredreamfootage I have shot with the FS7 and have a few points of clarification: "The largest difference is the FS7 is configured for Cinema and the FS5 is configured for broadcast / REC709 type application." I disagree. Both cameras produce lovely footage that is nevertheless not very cinematic, even the FS7. Compared to cameras like F3, FS700, and of course BMD. Shoot with one and then you will see what i mean. "The FS7 also as an Alexa mode which operators and DPs say match the Alexa look." I would doubt any DP would say the FS7 image looks anything like the Alexa. Can you find anyone that would publicly say so? The only Sony cameras that do so are the CineAltas (e.g. F65). The FS7 4K mode is also 10-bit 422 internal and up to 60fps whereas the FS5 is 8-bit 422 internal up to 30fps. FS5 does 10-bit 422 -- but only for FHD, not UHD. "The FS5 currently has issues with outputting to an external monitor when recording 4K internal, this would be an issue if you need an output for the focus puller, director, operator and client. The FS7 has no issue at all." True enough, but with the FS7 I don't think you need an external recorder at all. It can create nice gradable footage in camera. "The FS5 however has two memory card slots for relay recording or backup recording." Untrue. FS7 has two XQD slots and does support relay recording.
"Jason H" is one reviewer of the FS7 that commented it has an Alexa look. His review can be read here: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1082825-REG/sony_pxw_fs7_compact_4k_xdcam_with.html Also Sony trainers came to my City and explained which mode was meant to match the Alexa.
The XAVC and XAVC-L codecs (the two found in the FS5) are actually stronger codecs than XAVC-S. XAVC-S is also just as hard on your computer processor as XAVC-L. So no, please do not put the consumer XAVC-S codec in this camera.
14:31 - Sorry, to be truly "Run n' Gun" all recording modes needs to be in real time. No end trigger BS and having to wait for it to write to the card. For this reason I am considering the Red RAVEN over this camera.
I don't think this is a 4k camera I truly thinks it's a high end 1080p camcorder with a good sensor and Sony just put 4k on the camera. I have a lumix gh4 and a black magic ursa editing software DaVinci and Sony vegas 14. the price this one camera you can buy both cameras I got. gh4 was 1500 and the ursa was 4000
