CL’s journey is extremely inspiring. leader of the groundbreaking girl group 2ne1 to being essentially silenced by her label for years. i see her new album alpha as an exploration of her feelings throughout this time and a celebration of where she’s at now 😅😅

The whole ALPHA Album is a no-skip of 2021. She's damn experimental in her sounds. I'm so thankful she had so many producers on this album. This was how an album was made back in the day, before social media existed.She's so authentic it's crazy what goes on in her and her team's brain.

STORYTIME (might be a long one, sorry haha) CL debuted in 2009 as the leader of 2NE1 (she was 17-18 like what??) and 2NE1 really broke a lot of boundaries for girlgroups (they were also the most awarded group at the MAMA in 2009 and 2010, their POWER UGH), they were so so so huge for kpop and they disbanded in 2016. 2NE1 was often advertised as the "talented but ugly" group at the time, CL said somewhere that YG even asked her to get plastic surgery, but she refused...! After their disbandment, CL got like one release after that, Lifted in 2016, and that was mostly it, we barely heard from her, barely saw her at events (when we did it was to do the same songs over and over). It's a bit unclear to me if it's because YG thought that she wasn't marketable anymore (and they had BP to focus on at that time) or if they didn't want to release her music the way she wanted, but yeah, it was a really hard time for her since she was kind of stuck in her contract with them and couldn't express herself through her art anymore. Her contract ended in 2019 and the week after she released In the Name of Love (I highly recommend it, I think you would really like it) and beside the song names, there's the date when she wrote the song and when we look at the timeline it often matches with important events in her life and they're just beautiful beautiful songs to me (I cried for a month listening to it lol) And in 2020, she announced her FIRST album (in 13 years of career) ALPHA, she wrote all the songs and it was produced by her independent label Very Cherry :) I cannot tell you how much I cried when she released the first songs (HWA and 5Star) haha I first saw CL when I was 14 years old, and at that time I really needed someone in my life to show me that being a woman isn't only being soft spoken, delicate and pretty you know ? CL broke so many female stereotypes for me and she always reminds me that there's not only one way to be a woman. And from that moment I just never stopped being her fan and wishing for her to release more music, which is why ALPHA is so special to me. To see her so happy to make music and perform again feels a bit like a dream haha And you're right, she is a ✨PERFORMER ✨ when you have time, definitely watch her performances !!! "i see a lot of bad boy and bad girl concepts in k-pop, and i think she brings her own style to that" cl started the bad girl concept in k-pop. everything we see nowadays, even blackpink's vibe, is bc of her making that concept marketable back in 2009-2013-ish (with her former band, 2ne1). her & 2ne1's impact on the female idol industry is absolutely ridiculous, and impossible to rlly drive home if you didn't see it. the baddest female was unlike anything anyone had ever done at the time

Let It was a song worked with her group, 2NE1 but never got released. YG did them really dirty on their last years of activity so the song kinda feels like when you took all the punches, got knocked out but still stood up and conquered!!! Her journey (and the group's) is really inspiring, if there's one lesson to take is to never give up, no matter what.

thank you for reacting to CL's songs. Her artistry never disappoints as you can see in her music, production, fashion..hands down. As her fan way back as 2NE1 this means alot, really appreciate this. Hoping for a Part 2 or 3 or more, yeah?

CL actually intended for “Let It” to be 2NE1’s reunion song. For context, 2NE1 was sabotaged by YG and the members were blamed for the disbandment when they actually wanted to stay together. Back in 2014, 2NE1’s main vocalist Park Bom had a police case from 4 years prior resurface (some suspect as a cover-up to news of government corruption contributing to the Sewol Ferry tragedy) and basically ruin her career: she used to live in the USA when younger and was prescribed Adderall as treatment for her ADD. Back in 2010, Bom had Adderall shipped to her grandmother’s house in Korea. As the consumption isn’t legal in Korea, she was investigated and charges were dropped. 4 years later, this resurfaced and the media basically treated Bom as a drug smuggler, and YG didn’t even do the bare minimum to clear her name. That year, 2NE1 completed their world tour and went into hiatus, with Bom not even being present at a year end award ceremony. At that time, CL already had plans to jump start her career in the US and potentially have 2NE1 cross over too, working with many worldwide producers and making many connections. She spent the year of 2015 working on her solo music and released Hello Bi+ches as what was supposed to be the lead single of her debut album. We only really saw 2NE1 back together a year after their tour ended, in December 2015. CL was supposed to perform her song but after she ended the members surprised us all and came out from the floor and performed what would be their last stage together (at the time, we thought they were gearing up for a comeback). A few months later, main dancer/lead rapper Minzy left the group and YG (years later she opened up and we found out she was experiencing s***idal feelings and was unhappy with being in hiatus for almost two years). YG announced that Minzy was leaving but the remaining 3 members (CL, Bom and Dara) would have a summer comeback album. Upon hearing the news, CL immediately dropped everything she was doing in the US and flew to Korea to make that album and try to salvage 2NE1, even if as a trio. Months went by and the album never got released. All their work went to waste. By the end of 2016, YG announced 2NE1’s disbandment and in the beginning of 2017, 2NE1 (sans Minzy) released “Goodbye”, the final single. CL wrote the lyrics as a letter to Minzy and was supposed to release the song as part of her solo album. YG blamed the disbandment on Minzy leaving, Bom’s scandal and CL’s solo efforts (the same CL that dropped everything for 2NE1 and always stated that 2NE1 was the priority over her solo work). After 2NE1’s disbandment, CL still had her contract with YG as a soloist and was still working very hard and making many connections with top artists and producers. At one point she was being represented by Scooter Braun (who also manages Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande) but even he got tired of YG always sabotaging CL. She even got to film a few music videos and recorded a lot of songs and collaborations, but sadly nothing apart from her 2016 single “Lifted” was released. On New Year’s Day 2018, a very frustrated CL leaked snippets of an unreleased music video for the song “All In” on Instagram. She said she had shot “All In” over a year prior and “may get into trouble” for leaking it, but wanted to give something to her fans. Around that time, she began making less and less public appearances and had a very sudden weight gain (which was surprising because she used to work very hard on her fitness). It was obvious that she was very stressed and frustrated with the path her career was going. Still, she absolutely killed her performance at the 2018 Winter Olympics closing ceremony. In 2019, CL’s contract with YG finally ended and she released her digital EP “In The Name of Love” independently with 6 songs that she had saved for herself over the years between 2NE1’s hiatus and the end of her contract. Each song has the date it was written on the title, so it’s kind of like a diary, and each song has a music video, but CL herself doesn’t appear on any of the videos and held no promotions for the album. She didn’t even make public appearances at the time. 2019 was also the year Bom’s name was finally cleared: after a TV show similar to 20/20 had an episode about her scandal, she gathered the courage to speak up and reveal that she suffered from ADD and her prescription drug was Adderall and the whole incident was a misunderstanding (back then YG only gave a half ass statement talking about Bom’s teenage trauma of watching a colleague die on the field in the middle of a soccer match, which had nothing to do with her ADD, and didn’t really go in detail or try to further explain the situation). Alpha is CL’s long awaited debut album after all these struggles. It’s the album that she worked hard on since 2019 and was supposed to release in 2020 (she released the songs “Hwa” and “5 Star” from the album as lead singles) before deciding she needed to improve it (and before her mom sadly passed away in the beginning of 2021, which further delayed her plans). The 2NE1 members are all still very supportive of each other and they only didn’t release “Let It” because at the time of recording, Minzy was busy promoting her solo single. But CL had Bom and Dara record their parts (Dara sings the pre-chorus and Bom sings the chorus and ad libs in the end, and Minzy is supposed to have the first verse and the bridge). For the album recording of “Let It”, CL even changed her style of singing those parts to sound more like the other members. She sings it in her own style live and you can see the difference. CL said she still plans on releasing 2NE1’s version of Let It and having a group reunion soon.

I love that CL did the rap part in Korean in Lover Like Me (I had to checked the english translation afterwards, but I think she didn't leave Eng translation intentionally because of her pride for Korea)! K-pop songs nowadays are mostly Korean with some English words or rap thrown in there, and CL flipped it with mostly English and then Korean rap. I thought that was brilliant.

the "Let it" is supposed to be a reunion song with her 2NE1 members, she even let us hear the demo(u can find on yt) in like her live/virtual interview/event but since the members are busy with their schedules, they didn't finished recording. i think that's one of the reasons why it's very personal and special. we could've get a mini 2NE1 reunion

thanks for reacting to the queen CL. She is now an independent artist and formed her own brand for the release of her first solo album because the company where she was before did her dirty. She has fought a lot to put her music out there for us. We are really happy she is finally back. Definitely one of the most complete artists out there. The Baddest Female Indeed.
