To be honest if you see that scene showed a sense that when he shakes his hand that once you leave and if he can’t return back he will be in charge. A way of saying “man of the house” that scene was powerful. Noticed the younger one hugged but not the elder, a sense of responsibility that he will take care of his family if Neil died. Beautiful!

@@missnutella2000the family really was a part of the mission. They ran the risk of losing someone for the sake of science, exploration, and national/international pride and she made everyone confront and acknowledge that. Movie was a bit of a slow burn but this was a good scene.

I think because he's too busy doing his work and doesn't have time with his own family, he becomes a more like cold, do it by the book and stiff personality..but in this scene, I can tell he's trying hard to connect with his family and the fact this scene is made with the help from the actual two Neil sons is incredibly moving

This scene is one of the best in the movie, we see how Neil tries so hard to compose himself, the way he cannot maintain eye contact and that anxious hand rubbing, all his life his upbringing was taught to be this stern, stoic person, never to show signs of weakness , as seen in earlier scene where he hide in a room to cry after the funeral, and also at the end during the crater scene where of all the magnificent of the moon, the only things he could see is his family, a powerful scene hands down

Men of that era - that is the way they were. That scene reminded me somewhat how my Dad would have responded. It wasn't that these men didn't feel or care - to the contrary they cared deeply for the ones they loved. They were taught that men best served their families and friends by being that solid rock that their loves could anchor to during upheavals and trials of lives.

@@jon8004fathers with regular 9 to 5's often don't pay enough attention to their children's lives. The space program was extremely taxing on it's participants and more than once in the movie he has trouble balancing his personal professional life but I like that those scenes are intermixed with scenes of a relatively happy family. Sidenote, curious why the movie went with a dark AF tone. Sure Armstrong understand hardships but he wasn't a forever haunted soul. Even Chris Hadfield said the movie was realistic except for the fact space travel is a lot of fun and not the sombre event portrayed.

You see at 1:19 Armstrong's stoic facade crack ever so slightly; That little "I'm sorry" to his own son, and all of the sudden that repressed guilt and fear suddenly comes to the surface. When this movie came out, Gosling's performance almost seemed to be taken for granted by some people, given his history of playing minimalist leads. That's a shame, honestly, because in my multiple viewings since, I've only viewed a thoughtful, incredibly potent piece of work. It's one where every nuance really yearns to be seen, as its not only an exceptional reactionary turn, its also a unique interpretation of a famous but enigmatic man. The oscars made several errors of judgment last year, but overlooking this performance by Gosling was one of there biggest blunders.

@@coll912 Lets be fair here - Malek did about as good of a job as any actor could've with that script and film. While I'll admit to not caring for the movie very much, Malek's performance does carry it well, and it is quite a departure from his usual range. Now having said that, however, I still found Gosling's portrayal of Neil Armstrong truly outstanding.

I thought "First Man" was kind of like a Michael Mann's movie about stoic, professional astronaut who is so good at what he does but is bad at everything else like communicating with his kids and families. You might find this opinion strange but that was how i felt while i was watching this movie at theater. The way Damien Chazelle handled the dangers of manned space flight and depicted the way the astronauts approached their works were done with so high level of realism and authenticity that i thought this is what Michael Mann would have done as a masterful work if he were a director instead of Damien Chazelle. Neil Armstrong accepting the fact that he might lose his family by dying during the spaceflight reminded me of the psychological struggle of Jeffrey Wigand in "The Insider" who accepted the fact that he might lose his family if he were to whistleblow the malfaisance of the tobacco company he worked for. And for me it is the proof that Damien Chazelle did a solid cinematic work.

My father did. It was very typical behavior of men of that generation. It didn't mean that they didn't care or feel, quite to the contrary. Many of them grew up during the Great Depression and fought in WW2 or Korea. In the case of Armstrong, he saw combat as a Naval aviator in Korea and went on to be a test pilot of high-performance jet aircraft. Many men from that period just a tight wrap on their emotions as a mechanism to many of the hardships they endured.
