First Night Living in my Car (Sleeping at Walmart)

Like so many others, I have run into some unfortunate financial circumstances lately, mainly due to the COVID-19 situation we are faced with. This has forced me to take the leap and move into my car, something that I had always been curious to try ever since first getting into car camping.
This is my first official night in the bizarre, yet exciting journey that I am now embarking on. I'm optimistic that things will go well, and I'm enthusiastic at the prospect of living in an unconventional way while challenging the social norms/standards. Make sure to follow along!
For those who are curious, this is a 1991 Toyota 4runner.

If the choice is between keeping your car or keeping your apartment, keep your car. You can live in your car but you can't drive to work in your apartment.

@@JonathanYentch I'm there too. I met an Hispanic lady yesterday that no one would know by looking at her vehicle or her that she's living in it and saving every penny of her unemployment. We both agreed we won't pay $1400 a month to rent a room where they want you gone or invisible. I'm either going to rent an office to work or get a bigger more comfy rig and travel for work. A lot more people are doing this than I realized. I met a young woman who lives in a schoolbus. I hope we can change the ridiculous laws that favor real estate investors over a human being's god given right to sleep 8 hours which has survived many thousands of years of evolution...so sleep must be mighty important!

This brings back very fond memories of my solo vacation from Florida to Montana and then into Canada. I had a wonderful time and loved sleeping in my SUV at truck stops, rest stops, Walmarts, and even some random places where other truckers were parked. Sometimes I parked on the exit ramps leading to highways in the middle of nowhere land because that is what the other truckers were doing. I was fortunate to be able to have the darkest tint you could have on my vehicle. TIP: In Florida, they have a medical exemption that allows certain people with skin conditions (eg. skin cancer) to LEGALLY have illegal tint on their vehicle. The very next year I moved to Alaska (yes, from Florida again) and was able to drive solo again. However, this time I had to sleep in my U-Haul and it was terribly uncomfortable. Even though I towed my SUV with a mattress in the back, I never used it. I did not want to be seen getting into the back of an SUV alone at some of these very dark rest spots. Safety first.

Could not agree with your statement from a year ago. I started becoming more and more fascinated with van life not long before the pandemic started. The shelter in place really allowed me to spend countless days and hours watching other people's conversions and set ups and documentaries on people's own personal journeys. I was born and raised here in the east bay area of Northern California. What you said about what some people have to do simply to try to just scrap by in high cost of living areas is so true. Living in one of the most outrageous and sickening expensive areas in the country myself, I would love to have opportunity to free myself from homeownership and the concrete jungle I am currently a slave to

I got a concussion from a bicycle accident (at that time I was also undiagnosed neurodiverse). Afterwards I was homeless on the street for 45 days. Then 6 months in a shelter. I've since had 70 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen, so all healed. But damn not until I had every aspect of my life ripped from me. BTW, the HBOT clinic I went to was in Mexico City. Sessions there were only $13 each session for 2.0 ATA. Edit: I know it's difficult to gather the resources after a life event like we have all experienced. Somehow figure out a way to either build a DIY chamber or travel to where treatment is affordable. e.g. Mexico City: $10 to $15; Egypt: $10; England: $18; Egypt: $10; Indonesia: $5 to $10. One can build one out of an old propane tank, or concrete and rebar.

The most uncomfortable I was physically (due to the human developing in my womb) but some of the best moments of my life as far as meeting the most humble ppl I've ever known and being free from the living situation I was in. It grew me in ways that came in handy for parenthood, my survival skills are immaculate and met some friends for life... It made me one hell of a mother😊 find a lake, make a fire, get an old device and use walmarts wifi, meditate, and only go to Walmart when ready to sleep. It's just like camping. same here, work fulltime, and OT, and am also in school (online). I use the free wifi at the library, and use truck stop showers or friend's showers. I made the decision a few months ago and am sleeping in a mini van with no significant modifications, after being shuffled around from room to room in the town I live in- one 30 day notice (with no cause) and one insane situation in which my landlord lied to get a restraining order against me to get me out, while also taking my rent/deposit unjustly. I am a single female and have been in online classes since spring to get into healthcare. Despite all the drama, still have all A's and one B! I am able to cook and eat at my job, which is helpful. Some days are a struggle, but overall, I have more time to do fun things, even with my relatively crazy schedule. I do feel more free, and have gained perspective that has helped me find more happiness. One of my goals is to disengage from materialism. I hope you stay well and stay safe and have fun.

Always great to see people embarking on their first nomad adventure. Its less about living a nuanced life style, and more about breaking down assumptions of our needs as human beings in our 21st century american culture. I like to think I have one of those 'sims' bars (like in the video games) and as long as you have the means of increasing each of those needs to get it to green, you can live anywhere. The toughest part is just finding out how to occupy yourself with your down time

Although all these videos about being free, living in your vehicle are so helpful to masses of us in situations where this life style makes sense, I can’t help but also be alarmed. As a 53 year old person, my gut instinct is that there is something very strange about masses of Americans being trained to live in such a vulnerable position. Our family structures demolished, with Covid, our sense of community is also being torn down- It’s bizarre how normalized it’s becoming and frankly, scary thinking about the implications. Why are so many of us being “forced” into nomad life? Are there going to be orders for all of us to show up at a train station at some point? Just wondering ... what is going on with this? The problems with this life are many- you need fuel, you need funding for maintenance, etc... You will also face discrimination as most of the time it’s obvious you live in a car. Some people will assume things about you that are not true. Things like medical care and jobs are hard to keep up with. You have to find a way to get mail. It’s easy to get disconnected. I pray each one of us has Jesus with you and follows the path the Holy Spirit leads you to follow. That is the best protection whatsoever happens. Have a Bible in your car- that should be a must have 🙏😇 Enjoy the adventure wherever you are!

So it's having faith in yourself & taking action to make positive changes in your life, not sitting back & hoping "Jesus " will get it done for you. We don't need your patronizing pity or your chosen cult religion Raminakai.

The big problem with getting kicked out of an apartment or home because of no job and no way to pay the rent or mortgage, and then moving into a vehicle with no job, is when the vehicle breaks down and there's no money to get it fixed. Then you're screwed.
@williamnale7835

Take the savings from no rent and do proactive maintenance on the vehicle. Keep a maintenance account like owner operator truck drivers do.. Best to get a fuel efficient reliable vehicle too..

@@williamnale7835 Dude, if a person can't pay rent, common sense suggests they can't pay for proactive maintenance on their vehicle either. Duh.

@@2242bzo What are you talking about? $20 a month and probally a couple $100 + expenses per year is all it costs to maintain a decent car.. This is nothing compared to over $1000 a month for rent.

If you’re in that situation, you’ve got bigger problems than a broken down vehicle. The guy in the video looks like he has it together and is choosing to be “homeless”

During winter time, if the car is sealed up with windows rolled up and you have a fleece blanket your body heat will heat up the car and keep you warm throughout the night. Just try not to get out of the car during that time or you'll loose valuable heat. I'm sorry if you have to go through that just thought that might help.

One of my friends just recently became homeless and lives in his car. He parks at rest areas off the interstate at night because it is legal and safe because of other vehicles and truckers there sleeping.

There's some safe rest areas, and there's some that are really dangerous. I was brushing my teeth and freshening up at one and this guy walked in, and I didn't stay long enough to find out what was going to happen next!

I did this for two years by choice. I stored everything including cars. I rotated my cars out. I miss it! In summertime I had a tent with a shower and everything. I actually miss living this way! I'm making plans to convert a van and live this way permanently. I remember my first night. I used my station wagon. It was the BEST night ever!

Once upon a time in American people would rent a room to live in to regain their footing and in today’s times people live in their vans or other vehicles. You’re not alone and I wish you well, just remember you’re not homeless.
