We're all good at finding evidence to justify our personal narratives, whether it's believing we're the centre of a conspiracy or using one minor mechanic to thematically explore and entire game. This essay looks at Campo Santo's 'Firewatch' through the lens of its virtual camera.
Ian Danskin's video can be found here: • Who Shot Guybrush Thre...

I listed it as being written by Jude Baril-Bedard as this is the name they go by now. The name listen on the article, however, is Roxanne. Sorry if this caused confusion!

What I like about this is that videogames tend to attract "do or do not buy" kind of criticism (like a product review), rather than the more literary criticism than the kind you tend to give - something that engages with the themes of the artwork. In a world that tends to dismiss videogames as entertainment rather than culture, videos like this are not only welcome, but necessary. (still though, if we're talking about the nature of player agency and interactive art, you're going to do something on The Beginner's Guide and The Stanley Parable... right? Or maybe they're just too obvious)
@WhatsSoGreatAboutThat

Thank you! Glad I can provide something different. :D I've had something on The Beginner's Guide kicking around for over a year, haha, but then it merged with another possible essay on Hamilton so now I need to work all that out lol The issue with those games is that so much has already been said, but they're not off the table!

I agree with this completely, and it's part of the reason it irks me when people knock "walking simulator" games like Firewatch for being too short or having simple gameplay. I get that games can be expensive and people want to get their money's worth, but too often, as consumers, gamers place value on the wrong things. There are plenty of games I can play if I just want to be entertained, so I appreciate games that keep me thinking about them long after I put down the controller.
@matt3719
@matt3719 5 лет назад
@@WhatsSoGreatAboutThat I guess! I'd be interested in how those games tie into other media. So much discussion of those games is often "woah! it's so meta!" and these games are just scratching the surface, especially if you consider other media where meta themes are common.
@matt3719
@matt3719 5 лет назад
@@nathanspain5455 Weird, isn't it? Like, What Remains of Edith Finch or Gone Home tell interesting stories, but apparently aren't good games unless we have bang bang shooty between our story bits. What's wrong with just having an interesting interactive story? (I'd argue many games would be better, I certainly preferred the non-combat Bioshock Infinite DLC)
@AJ-pc9gu
@AJ-pc9gu 3 года назад
@@matt3719 Yea to be fair tho to bioshock, that first bit prolly blew their entire budget on that episode. It looked like it went way over budget visually. I prefer part 2, the dishonor knock off lol.

I don't know how exactly to say this, but your visuals and scripts are poetic in design. Your cadence as well as pacing lend to an incredibly poetic rhythm to them, broken up by the necessary quote or salient fact. I have never been so engrossed and intrigued by a visual essay (and I watch many), except by your entries. You have a quality that is able to dive deeply into an artists' work that is difficult for most people, and I am infinitely grateful for your insight and knowledge that you are able to share with us. (edit: i wrote this sentiment once buy my browser erased it. I hope this is sufficient)

I'm sitting on a plane watching this and I have so many questions about your creative process. The way you connect your academic dots is just remarkable, and how seamlessly you weave these concepts and reinforce them are just so masterful. It's intimidating in the best way. You make me want to have a podcast for the sole purpose of interviewing your creative process. I just can't fathom gathering a better picture without anything less than delving into your insights and hopefully passing along the inspiration that you have seen in so many things. It's so essential to learn how to dig deep within the art around us, and to scratch that hard to reach itch that ultimately answers why we reacted so strongly to a work of art. Ultimately we learn about those who create it as much as we learn about ourselves.

So this "player and protagonist are not exactly one with each other" theme is also similar to the one in night in the woods. However, it's quite interesting how here it conveys the fact that you are not central and a witness stance, while in the later it's more about emotions you can't control and the nature of choice. Good stuff

Great video. In my first play-through, I bought completely into the misdirection and was thoroughly disappointed at the end. But the game's ending and themes stuck with me, and I mulled over them for days or weeks. Eventually I decided I liked the story they chose, even though it wasn't what I thought I was getting at the time.

The whole thing about protagonist and player not being the same reminds me a lot of my insistence that "first-person" games are more accurately *second person* narratives. Putting you-the-player into the shoes of another character, defined or not, to experience the story as the character but also not. It's not a story being told to you in the character's own voice, like first person writing, it's a story experienced through the character's own *eyes.* You are experiencing the story and "you" are experiencing the story. Second person is my favourite form of storytelling as a whole, because of how immersive and immediate it can be, interactive or not. Video games, and stories in general, and photography, and art, are all *framed* by a person, with limits defined by a person (consciously or otherwise), saying as much in things left unseen as the things seen, and all tend to hide who exactly is doing that framing in the immediate experience of the thing being framed. "To reveal art and conceal the artist" or however that quote goes. Or maybe I'm just overthinking it all because of who I am as a writer- I mean, person. XD

It wasn't till later in my play through I started to take more pictures not just of things I thought I needed a record of, but the beautiful landscape too. And that mix of seeing photos in the end in reverse order drove home the story even more so about how much none of it was about me or my time with it, but what affected me while I was there. Great analysis; and great channel, def subscribing!

An excellent and sophisticated video essay, once again showing the depth of expression games can be. On a more specific note, I find the ambiguity of the objective and subjective ambiguities in a photograph to be an excellent mechanic in games, particularly in mysteries (used excellently in Gone Home). This is because each image drip feeds glimpses of information from past events forcing, you to construct its meaning based on the wider context of the game. The more you experience in the game and the more photos you acquire, the greater the unfolding of the world, or truth in the game, becomes apparent.

Just come from the Kate Bush New British Canon episode and thought I'd check some stuff out and I think I'll stick around. Your last remarks on how its not our job to prevent it but to be there when it happens and not run away remind me a lot of something I had thought about a lot. I went through a tough time last year and with that I came across the saying that mental health problems 'aren't your fault but are your responsibility'. I know that saying might not help everyone and that's fine (like most mental health sayings tbh) but it helped me personally realise when I to take a step back and apologise to people around me for things I'd said/done/not done in these lows that they'd feel they couldn't bring up because I was struggling.

This is a brilliant lens through which to view Firewatch (pun very much intended, and I trust you won't mind). It makes me want to go back and replay the game in the hopes of appreciating its themes more with the knowledge of what it's building to. I was one of the players who found it disappointing - mainly in the plot twist about the former ranger and his son, which I felt strained credibility to the point that it took me out of the story. But maybe I judged it too harshly in the moment?
@WhatsSoGreatAboutThat
@WhatsSoGreatAboutThat 5 лет назад
Thank you! And of course I always appreciate a pun! :D I think it might depend on whether the player values thematic payoff over emotional payoff (or vice versa). I'm very much a themes/analysis centric person, but I can see how the game maybe missed the mark emotionally. I can understand why many were disappointed.

@@WhatsSoGreatAboutThat I think you hit the nail right on the head there. I didn't feel enough of a connection to the father and son and their story for it to land emotionally for me. And while I can see what they were going for in re the themes of avoiding your problems & action/inaction, the actions the father took didn't feel to me like how any normal person would react in that situation. I just wasn't able to suspend my disbelief. But I might appreciate it more looking at it from a purely thematic perspective.

Sorry Grace, but I did not like this one. It looks like you did not exactly know where you were heading to with your investigation. I think the best video of yours so far is The Last Unicorn: Why Must You Always Speak In Riddles? During the video you were answering this very question, approaching it from different points of view, but all the roads led to Rome. In this essay many roads to nowhere, unlike David Lynch's approach, where all the plot lines tend to gather at one point, just to be blown up afterwards once they all get there, and end up being scattered in different directions that seem to be completely opposite to initial. Yeah, I think there is a gun on the wall, it's ready to be fired up, but it never happens, to summarize my thoughts after watching your video essay. I believe every story needs a conflict, a problem to solve. Anyway the good about all your videos is that the video editing is good, and your voice and the way you speak like you are on the same side with the viewers, trying to answer the same question, not that you already know all the answers and just allowing viewers to bow to your intelligence.
@Nia_is_gay
@Nia_is_gay 5 лет назад
Yeah it feels like the first half consists of exploring the photography theme, while second part aims to catch all the other interesting themes present. While it was done well and I enjoyed it, it feels like there is a problem with thematic consistency,hindering the perception of this video as a whole
@WhatsSoGreatAboutThat
@WhatsSoGreatAboutThat 5 лет назад
This is totally fair criticism! I agree, and I could feel it happening as I was writing it, but I had stuff I felt I needed to express. Actually, the reason I speak like I'm trying to answer a question along with the audience is because I am, haha. These essays are as much an exploration for myself as they are informative pieces for an audience, but the down side is sometimes it leads to this kind of aimlessness.
