In this video I fix my Toro Z Master 4000 zero turn mower. This mower is brand new to me and I've only used it once but during that first mow I immediately noticed a clunking feeling coming from the front left caster. Upon investigation I decided to call the dealer and it turns out to be a known issue. I got the official Toro parts and fixed it myself since it would've been a huge pain to have to bring it in. The fix included a two page direction packet and it couldn't have been easier.

For a new mower under warranty. The dealer should have picked it up, repaired it, and returned it to your home.

Nice job. You really can jack up the mower from under the deck. Just raise it and lock all the way at the top position, jack it up, and out a jack stand or two underneath the rim of the deck just in case.

typically that tube is packed with grease on most mowers. I'd be worried about that bearing wearing out rather quickly with no grease

I bought a new 54 inch Toro Titan with in 3 years I had to replace ever bearing in the deck the mower was $4200.00 new but the dealer warranty covered the cost of the repair. I had a Murray mower with a briggs and Stratton engine I gave $1300.00 for it at K mart I had it over 13 years and cut one acre never had a problem with it other than replacing a belt and bought one battery. I could have bought 3 Murray mowers for what I gave for the Toro.

Thank you for this. I literally just mowed 3 times and the same exact castor came off on its own. There is obviously too much play in that housing.

Use the extender when tapping the bearing back in place. That ensures pressure is being transmitted evenly

I would strongly suggest you would put a grease fitting on there. On both bearings on the inner side remove the seal, of the sealed bearings. Then on the opposite side I would drill a small wheat hole tap it out to put a screw in, and do regular greasing of the bearings. It failed because the grease and the bearing was weak, insufficient. Anywhere there's a bearing for the pulley's etc you should do this.

A bearing did not fail - Toro installed a bearing with a bushing washer that was too short in height - creating vertical slop about 3mm. When they realized this they immediately put out a document and a kit to correct this issue.

What are the bearing part numbers on the bag? That would be nice if I could see that. My dealer apparently is much more of a rule follower than yours. He says they have to do the warranty work.

Question, how did you get the top cap off? secondly I would of given the side of the bearing casing a light coat of grease to help it slide down!

Do you happen to have the part number for bearing and spacer? Dealer claiming they don’t know about this but both my dads and my titan max have the same issue at 14 hours and 8 hours

This happened with my 50 inch (75750) timecutter. Was fixed @ dealer under warranty.More reason to buy from dealer!

There was a factory bulletin on it. Dealer repaired mine. It’s a warranty item from toro.

Me, I would have added grease zerks while I had the assembly apart, and do the other side as well, and remove, on the bearing, after zerk install remove the top bearing the bottom bearing cover, and on the bottom the top bearing cover, so the grease you add with the new grease zerks, can enter the bearing, but with the price you paid the dealer should of come to you to install.

Those are sealed bearing with lifetime lube, only way adding grease fitting will help is if the seals are removed from the permanently lubricated bearings

Not true. Google it. Takes about 50 pumps from a grease gun and it will penetrate sealed bearings. ​@@timmyers3428

Most of the Toros ride on mowers have grease point in that jockey wheel tube plus ,heavy duty spring inside ,this is cheap and poor design .That heavy spring will take any up and down free play away ,so those spring inside the tube work as a shock absorbers and allowing jockey wheels to bounce on uneven surface .

Next time put the Bearing in the freezer for a couple hours and watch how much easier it slides into that sleeve !!!

Thanks for your comments! About the ROPS bar; I was wrong (I think) about the bolt and pin placement. I think it was correct all along. I looked in the Toro site at the official images of this machine and they are identical to mine. I don’t think it’s a very good design as it seems the pin just rides on the back of the lower bar and can therefore dent and scratch and rattle potentially. That being said, I don’t plan on having it down much. I did end up doing both left and right casters. The right did have some play in it although it was far less than that left side. Both are now swapped and I don’t feel any play at all thought I haven’t yet mowed after the repair. On the dealer lot the hour meter said 1.8 hours and I asked intently about that but was told that it must’ve just been from moving it around and such. Seems odd to me but I checked everything for any sign of grass and there was none. I even looked up under the deck and everything was new. Dealer stated that the machine has never seen grass. I will have an update video after I get some seat time but man what a nice machine so far.

@@GeneralExpert My timer had 0.03 hours on it when I picked up mine. They must have been doing a lot of driving around the lot, perhaps potential buyers trying it out many times before you purchased it. No matter - you have 1,250 hours/4 years warranty, no hour limit the first 2 years so you're good. They ride so nice maybe the employees rode it down the street every day to get their coffee! ;-) I agree - nice machines!

Can you give me the parts numbers for those packages you got to fix the front caster wheel clunking noise? My brand new 4000 Z has the exact same problem - I used my Z to cut my lawn for the first time yesterday and that clunking noise is driving me crazy! I called my dealer - he stated he was unaware of this issue, but if I could give him the part numbers he'd get them for me. Your video shows the Part Number for the bag with the spacers, but I cannot see the number for the bag with the bearings. Thanks, mike

@@Pure_KodiakWILD_Power the dealer basically stopped responding, my latest 2021 Liberty z52 with a Kawasaki started smoking like crazy, filled the garage. This is after I had to add oil because there was hardly any at all right after picking it up. I thought I overfilled it at first but this is my fourth Kawasaki engine so I'm familiar with how to fill these damn things. So I reached out to Scag because my dealer did not respond via phone text voicemail or emails. apparently scag reached out to them but scag did not want to get involved in anything more. They told me once the unit leaves our facility it's the Dealer's responsibility. All of my Scags had horrible make ready, lots of minor issues, etc but one of the control arms was held with one bolt and it was loose and while backing it off the trailer the first day I got it . and when driving it into the garage I almost hit the house because it came loose and the Machine took a severe left turn. There's so many more issues - parking brakes weren't set properly, no oil in the hydros, over inflated tires, deck leveling was off, etc. both Scag and the dealer left me hanging. I've made several videos and I'm pretty well known in the scag community unfortunately because of all the crap I've been through. Once my dealer and Scag refused to help THEN I started posted the videos. They are well aware of me and still to this day don't give a crap. Three brand new scags in one year and this is how I'm treated? F*** Scag.

@@morejelloplease Similar issue after issue for me with the Exmark 60 and 30 I bought last year though the dealers were ( two separate in dealers in total opposite directions, both 40 minutes to an hour from me ) pretty good about addressing the issues, so dealer support isn't a problem for me. Actually the dealer I bought the 60 from in Jersey is also a Scag dealer, so I'm going to Scag next ( like I should have done instead of these damn Exmarks ). I'm probably not getting satisfactory trade in so I'm gonna have to run them at least a couple more seasons but I'll gritting my teeth the whole time. Others love them. I don't. Frankly, alot of product quality has suffered since the pando hit.

@@Pure_KodiakWILD_Power no it's not so much the quality of the parts, it's the imbeciles that are putting them together that have zero Fuchs. I was looking at Exmark but it seems like they're really cheap running a 651 and 3100 hydros or you have to pay the premium for their laser which I cannot justify. So now I'm looking at Toro's, Hustler, I think Bobcat is off the list bc they're pricing system sucks. I may just pony up and get a Wright either zxl or a stander X.

@@morejelloplease with the labor scramble, some of the people assembling these machines are also untrained. It's not all Exmark; I've had some issues with the Kohler on the 60, too. Toro and Hustler are both good, but I have more back in the day employee experience with them, rather than owner experience in the last coupla decades.
