Unlike many other musician/reviewers, you appreciate Jonah's keyboard & singing genius. Others seem to be fixated more on Aron (Drums/percussion) and Henrik (Bass) and don't recognize Jonah as the glue that holds it all together. Even as a trained musician/composer, Dirty Loops often leave me without the words to describe what I'm hearing and feeling, but like any great art words are pretty meaningless in the face of this level of virtuosity. I can't go a single day without watching & listening to some of their extensive body of work on RU-vid. It's an addiction I'm proud of, and it's turned me into a one-man Dirty Loops pusher. Cory, my friend and fellow Minnesotan and accomplished world-class musician, I'm guessing it was you who initiated this event.

Jonah is like cherry on cake. He's absolutely opposite of tightning things together. That's specifically Henrik and Aron due on their drums and bass. Basement of music. Jonah is just the atomic add-on here.

Just like all the songs from this collaboration, Cory Wong and Dirty Loops had never met at this point…this is recorded on two different continents. Aron (drummer) had a big hand coordinating the lights, the carpet, etc to make it seem as if they were in the same studio. I am thankful for Dirty Loops…I had given up on discovering great music at my age and kept listening to older music but now I have 3 cd’s of them in my car and when my puppy and I go for a drive it’s all we listen to. He’s a fan, too lol.

Gushy comment to follow.....Your reaction was perfect for this! Your enthusiasm just enhanced the enjoyment of the awesomeness of Dirty Loops! The comment "you just can't imagine there being more. It's just so well thought out." is absolutely true. It's hard to improve on perfection. Thanks for being here and I've just subscribed to your channel.

Your reaction is so authentic because you're just feelin' it! Don't worry so much about breaking down the complexities of the technical stuff; as your audience, we relate more to your smile and physical reaction to the music. It was a refreshing & fun experience to share this collaboration anew with you (Follow the Light will literally blow your mind). I've subscribed to your channel and will be watching & listening to more of your reactions to Dirty Loops. Thanks for keeping it real, Charlie!

It was great to see your reaction was the same as mine….speechless! These guys are on another level. All of them. You almost have to be a musician to really appreciate the talent in this band. Even the horn section rotated from sax to flute and clarinet. Mind blown. It still gives me chills to hear this song. Sometimes the best reaction is being overwhelmed and speechless!

Thanks for a brilliant reaction. I really enjoyed your enthusiasm, and you pointed out a few things I have managed to miss despite having listened to this a bazillion times by now. Always great to get someone else's perspective, as I tend to listen with my horn player ears, and miss intricacies between the bass and drums, like the one you pointed out at around 7:25. You might want to check out Follow the Light from that same album (on Dirty Loops' channel) as well. There are videos for two of the instrumentals (Turbo and Ring of Saturn) up on Cory Wong's channel too, and they are well worth a listen. The wind section is ridiculously good in those two.

12/8 funky beat, full horn section and cinematic horns during the bridge! like something out of MJ & Bond! The bar was always high these days but these guys put it full out of range! By far the best drummer, Bassist and vocal ive heard in 50 years of music study! now thats a big call but i cant lie! Dirty Loops are as good as it will ever get in my lifetime! x

The influences here are amazing! Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Earth/Wind/Fire, Chicago, Jaco Pastorius, Buddy Rich, plus a little bit of mysterious, "I can't-put-my-finger-on-em" others.... simply amazing. I have JUST Discovered these Musicians/Masters/Artists very recently. I am totally blown away. I was a semi-pro trumpet player back in my youth. I think I was pretty good. Man, at my BEST I wouldn't belong in the same ROOM with these guys! Every single person is individually outstanding. All together? Unbeatable. This is the best jazz/rock/pop/funk fusion I have ever heard! Great reaction!!

Took me a while, too, but at the 10:45-ish mark, just follow the bass rhythm… it repeats every two measures over a steady 4-beats per measure. Once you get the bass riff in your head, you’ll feel it. And when they finish that section and the horns do their little transition thing, the groove at the end is so damn good! So fun! Thanks, man! Love your stuff.

Great show, Charlie. First time for me. I have followed these guys since 2018. They just keep getting better and better. Not sure you are aware that this song was recorded on 2 different continents at the same time, so they were not together with Cory and his band. They recreated the same sets from over 4K miles away. I think that makes this even more incredible. Keep up the good work, and again thanx.

A couple of things not at the top of the comments: 1. This arrangement has taken an albeit funky 4/4 song and re-imagined in 12/8. This makes the 4 over 3 riff the bass and drums combine on (actually twice) just before the bridge and closer to the end all the more incredible. 2. THE POCKET!!!!! In EVERY song DL play have such an absurdly deep pocket, there is as much rhythmic support for the melody as there could possibly be.
@DanSpomer
@DanSpomer Год назад
Jonas’ long held high note was a direct tribute to Marc Ledford of the Pat Metheny Group. The bridge was also Methenyesque, nearly a carbon copy of “Finding and Believing” from Secret Story, especially the late 90s live DVD in New Brunswick. I could also argue that some David Blamires influence from the PMG was present, and Henrik alluded to some Steve Rodby.

If you're a vocalist you have to check out their song ''Hit me'' and pic the official video, not a live one. Those runs the singer does are insane, his agility is crazy. And you better brace yourself for the vocal run in the end.

Hey mate. Love your enthusiasm and fan-boying when you hear good musicians. I'm the same... 😂 This song is a technical double nod to Michael Jackson. It's Thriller but it's done in a 12/8 shuffle like The Way You Make Me Feel. These guys are just on another level. Keep doing what you do brother. Peace... ✌

Hey Charlie, that was a fire reaction! Really enjoyed listening to this song through your ears and mind :) I absolutely love Cory Wong and Dirty Loops, and this collab is just so good! What always strikes me with this ‘cover’ (if you can call it that) is the happiness and feel-good vibes of it. Along with all the insane things you’ve mentioned. There is an interesting interview of Cory with Henrik Linder, from his podcast series Wong Notes. Google it, you might find it interesting… they talk about stuff such as making this video (and the other ones from that collab), filmed on two different continents, and lots more. Someone also once mentioned that Cory and DL kind of divided the songs of this LP up in more ‘Cory-led’ arrangements and DL-ones. This one would be done more by DL, I’m guessing, with Cory hanging more in the background, still funky and tight as…. The horns have been arranged by one of the horn players, Kenni Holmen. Just brilliant! Btw, in that middle/bridge instrumental section they give the impression of changing the time signature or beat, but still stay in 4/4, just using syncopations and metric modulations to lead us astray, I think 😉 Appreciate and totally share your respect for these dudes, and would love for you to do more DLoops reactions, like “Follow the Light”, another one of their Cory Wong collaborations 🔥 Thanks man 🙏
@TheCharlieSmithChannel
@TheCharlieSmithChannel Год назад
Great comment and thank you for your awesome insights. Yeah this one definitely seemed to be more DL led didn't it. Thanks for clarifying the time signature in the bridge. After listening another 20 times I realised it was still in 4/4 😂. I will train my ear to be better. Thanks for watching man. More DL and Cory coming for sure

Horns are actually arranged by trombone/double-bell Euphonium player Michael Nelson as most of the arrangements are even with Cory Wong.

@@TheCharlieSmithChannel The whole song is in 12/8 though, not 4/4. What messes with your (and my) mind in the interlude, is that they've overlayed it with some type of 3/2 rhythm, and getting a pattern of 3x4 going over the 4x3 of the 12/8. If that makes sense? I'm a classical musician, so I have no idea how to express it properly in jazz or jazz fusion terms, but that what's makes most sense to me. :) And that snare accent on the 8th eighth note every bar is quite confusing to me. I still haven't figured out if I should think of that one as a part of the 12/8 or the 3/2. It's gone so far I'm seriously considering buying Aron's drum book for this album, just to see wtf he is doing there, and I don't even play the drums, hahaha.

This was a very nice reaction indeed! It is easy to love Dirty Loops, and it is so nice to here you talking about it. (Cory Wong and not least the Horn Heads are of course really good as well!). Have you perhaps picked up enough skills now to revisit this version of Thriller?

Wonderful reaction. Just great ongoing comments and emotional reactions. Got my sub and gotta agree with you about Aaron's snare. I mean everything Aaron does is superlative but then he caps it with some of the best drum sound ever recorded and that snare just leaps of the track. Love it. Also you did confirm something I've thought since first hearing this, Corey's mix just seems way, way down. You can hear his fantastic work much better on the "Follow the Light" collab.

Charlie! It's been a minute (for me) seeing your face. My bad about that. Gotta do better. Good to see you. I was kinda shocked that you hadn't seen or heard this one. But yeah, it quite great. It's like Stevie covering MJ. I always hear Stevie when Jonah sings. A little Stokley from Mint Condition also. And I'm very much like you in that I gravitate towards the rhythm section more. Even without Cory and the horns, I'm like that. But I'm also not a musician, so I don't know what I'm talking about anyway. There are songs on this particular project where Cory really does his thing, like "Follow the Light". I feel like I remember speaking to you about that one on IG, but maybe that was something different. Anywho, great reaction. Take care of yourself.
