First Reaction - Focal Alpha 80s 

Just bought two krk 10.4. Now I am saving for two Alpha 80's. Then two Focal shape 40's. I am producing my own Gospel albums and I will use Spitfire Audio's Abbey Road, Albion & BBC Symphonic sample libraries to film score and place my songs in Indie Westerns..."my dream of dreams" Yes I dream big and I love it...my creative musical life!!

That's good knowing how you have the other parts of your studio setup w/ diffusion and bass panels.

spot on to my current situation since I literally just got rid of my HS8's a few days ago. Now I'm patiently and very enthusiastically waiting for the imminent release of the Focal Alpha Evo 65's. Thanks for this review D! Very much looking forward to the upgrade!

I also went to these from the HS8's. Been using these monitors since 2014 shortly after they released. When paired with Sonarworks, they are extremely accurate and translate very well. The HS8's are miles behind these. I just upgraded to the Trio6 Be and they are even better. One thing you might benefit from with your Alphas is to get them off and behind your desk on stands. I would leave them at the same distance they are currently from the wall and move your desk and your keyboards back towards the camera 1-2 feet. That bump in the low mids is a reflection off your desk and something everyone deals with. Can't really avoid it. But moving them behind the desk will reduce that bump and should help reduce that dip between 60-100.

Focal just dropped the Focal Alpha Evo. So if someone is planning to get these go for the evo series. They have new updates like turning the standby mode on/off and a TRS input. And they look AMAZING ! The price difference is minimal so check them out. But I had the 80s and its true they sound amazing for the price. Love the reaction

i've been using the smaller version, the alpha 65, for a few years and i love them, affordable and great quality, difficult to beat

I use the Focal's for the past 4 years. I love them and the quality to price ratio is unbeatable as far as I'm aware. I did have the 80's but I feel they are a bit big for my room. I have the Alpha 65's now. They're a bit cheaper here in Germany, maybe because Focal is a French manufacturer, not sure. The RRP is about the same (650CAD / 440EUR) but you can find them about 100EUR less from an online retailer.

Yeah I had the Alpha 65's they are unbeatable in the price range - one thing I would say, is make sure your room is big enough to handle the 65 or 80s...

Thank you for your very professional review, very enlightening. Now, I need some advice from you since it seems you have the correct expertise. After a year with them,I just sold my HS8, not very happy with them. Looking for my next monitors, mainly for listening to music and fun. I am torn between the Evo 80 and the Genelecs 8040. Evo at 450 and Gens at 800. Although I could make the effort and afford the Gens, is it really worthed the price difference? I do apprecciate a lot imaging and depth plus detail and presence. There are also the Dynaudio LY8 at 700. Please my friend. help me with this😂. Do the Gens are worthed the xtra money vs the Evo 80? Thank you so much and keep on with this great channel. Good choice man. I have the Focal Shape 65 with passive bass drivers from the side which take off the rumble bass frequencies and as you say they sound clear great to listen all day.

They are just a Step Above the HS8s I just Setup the New ADAM A7Vs DSP 💯 Now the Focal TriSolo6 Be are 👌🏽 I thought about the Evo 80 but for about 400$ more for each monitor I went with the ADAM AUDIO A Series.

Had a pair of Focal CMS 65’s; jumped up from KRK’s and it was a huge improvement. Now on Dynaudio BM6A’s and they’re incredible!

I had the HS80’s and sold them for a pair of Alpha80’s. With the Yamahas I just couldn’t get a good mix in the low end, plus they are back ported which would give me a completely wrong image of the low end when listening to the same mix on other system, I mainly work on electronic/techno/house therefore bass heavy music and was looking for a budget speaker that could serve me well, a friend has Focal Alpha80’s in his studio which I gave it a go and they simply worked for me, the front ported design work great for any room really, then I got sonarworks and life just got easier, I turn up the lows on sonarworks to kinda mimic a sound system and I just do not worry about how my mix is gona sound in other systems. These speakers just help mix with confidence. Having said that I am looking into a sub speaker, I might just go with the Yamaha one, hoping that will work for me, but as far as Focals go I became an instant convert .

2 years down the line how is your experience with the Focals and do you still recommend them for producers/engineers trying to level up they're monitoring system?

I research the shit out of everything I buy that's gear related but yeah Alpha 50's were my first pair and I'm perfectly happy with them 4 or 5 years later. (I'm in a bedroom studio so they're plenty big enough). You'd be surprised how loud and how much bass comes out of the 50's. I've seen a guy saying he thought the bass sounded better on the 50's than his 65's. Could be, smaller housing, it may be a tighter bass.

Used them , they were sounding fabulous, my only grip is they were making everything sound too good so i kept them for listening pleasure only instead of mixing.

I literally just bought these 2 days ago transferring from the hs7s. Alpha 80s are crazy good and nothings better in the price range. Even Adam A7Xs I listened too and the alpha 80s just wiped them out. However the alpha 80s are huge! But so is the sound so it’s worth it.

Excellent decision D. I use the 65 with sonarworks. They sounds so clear and full, I can mix on a very low level without fatiguing my ears.

can I connect the Focal Sub One to the EVO 50????

Nice review. These monitors are very intriguing to me. I have big room, so all the smaller woofer speakers worry me that they'll be too weak to crank up. How would you say the bass is on these without the subwoofer? I've heard it's strong, but maybe "slow"/sluggish?

should have awaited a few weeks. they just dropped in price significantly in the last few weeks. You can pick them up here in the US for $550 or i think roughly $650 CAD due to the new Focal alpha evos coming out this month

I also had the Yamahas and I wasn't satisfied either. vocals are also known. I'll try 8" Adams. Cheers

I had the HS8s and I loved everything about them but they were slightly harsh when mixing for long hours. now I own Alpha 80s and ADAM Audio(as my main monitors), Alphas are definitely not harsh and more balanced but as a hip hop producer I miss the low end and punch I was getting from HS8s to be honest(every time). If you own HS8s then don't buy anything else unless you itching yourself with extra cash, just take more breaks for the ears thou. Peace!

Maaaan you should have get the alpha 65s !!!! They are night and day difference in Sound quality. The 65s blow everything away below 1000€ a pair. There is a reason the Focal Alpha EVO are not aviable in 8" !!! And 40hz in the 65s is low enough. Trust me! If you can return then get the alpha 65!!!!

Yo, everybody is abandoning the yamaha HS8's as if it's a new form of gonorrhea! What's going on? Lol. hey... why don't you just put the HS8's on top the focals?

They are affordable, but quality wise they are cheaply built. Sides are plastic, cabinets are made out of particle board covered with vinyl. I bought a pair of Alpha 80's for about $500 used but regretted my purchased after seeing the quality of the cabinets. I had a pair of KRK VXT8's, VXT8's were way better built and sounded better in my opinion.
