In this video I'm giving you my take on the Focal 80 Evo Vs. Yamaha Hs 8. I wore out one of the Yamaha 8's from playing music too loud and needed a new pair of 8's and landed on the Focal Evo series.

The main thing I need is front ports. I can't get the monitors that far off the wall. I like my HS8s but I had to attenuate things to make it work and when I listen to something I produced it sounds very different. I don't expect the sound to be that different but I do hope it helps consistency.

Thanks. What’s the reason that you want to upgrade? Tbh if I didn’t have to upgrade due to speaker making noises I would’ve still rocked with the hs8. I say that because my room isn’t treated. These focals sound really good but I almost feel like I’m not getting the most out of them because of all the reflections off my walls. Also now that I’ve had them longer they hit even harder. Less low frequency ducking when I crank them now. Plus the low frequency and high frequency attenuation knobs are great. But my suggestion is don’t upgrade unless you have to. Hs8 are solid. I’m actually about to put my hs8 back up at low volume for mixing since I’m used to their sound. I trust what I’m hearing out of the Yamaha. I know I’m all over the place with this response. Hopefully this makes sense for you.

@@jltbk5420 hi, do the Yamaha HS8s have louder volume or about the same compared to these Focal Alpha Evos? Thanks
@jltbk5420
@jltbk5420 Год назад
@@h.m.2434 Yes. They have a knob on the rear that’ll turn the volume up or down. It also has 2 switches 1 that’ll adjust the high frequency - or + 2db at 2khz and another switch that does the same for low frequency at 500 hz. The volume knob is independent from the knob used on your audio interface. My best advice is to keep the main knob on the back at the 12 o’clock position and adjust to taste

I have krk5 inches now but I wanted to upgrade my monitoring . On the other hand, the focal 50 evo and the yamaha hs8 are relatively close to each other in the price range . What do you suggest? Focal 50 or yamaha hs8 or even focal 65evo? Thanks

Hello, thank you for your nice review kind soul, it really made my day to find someone who has yamaha hs8 and focal evo 80. I had yamaha hs7 and they also had that ducking effect (if I spell it correctly) when I cranked them up. Now I have fluid audio fx8 which has 130w each and no ducking effect when I turn them on to the max (I rarely do that, mostly turn them 3/4 for short periods of time) and they are really loud, but I'm mostly interested, after seeing and hearing all the reviews, no one ever mentioned the loudness of focal evo 80 compared to other monitors... my main question is which one is louder, focal or yamaha (and maybe if you could tell some other monitors too)?
@jltbk5420
@jltbk5420 Год назад
Thanks for the comment. Almost 3 weeks after I published the video they started having less of the (ducking) that I mentioned in the video. I believe this was the speaker protecting themselves because the cones weren’t fully broken in. Now that they are these speakers are awesome. Focals are definitely louder however when they both are cranked the Yamaha’s are slightly harsh in the top end. But all I’m all focals are better by a mid/small margin. And I believe only by a small margin to me because I’m working with both in a untreated environment. Thanks for stopping by glad you enjoyed the video.

@jltbk5420 thank you very much for reply. Yeah, I watched your video and some others and read reviews, pretty much satisfied with what I heard. Can you just tell me are they much louder than hs8 or a little louder (if that can even be measured by words xD)?

@jltbk5420 Год назад
@@brefcon Tbh it feels like it’s quite a bit louder. But if you’re thinking about getting them and you’re coming from the hs7 you’ll notice a big difference. The fact that they’re front ported makes them feel louder when I’m using them. Hope this helps. If you’re thinking of getting them you won’t be disappointed. You’ll only hate them in the beginning when breaking them in, but once they’ve worn in you’ll notice that grin of excitement on your face

@@brefcon my suggestion is to get them from Sweetwater but before you order them call and talk to a sales rep and let them know you want to try them so if you don’t like them you can return them without issues. I’m building my 500 rack rn and by doing this I’m able to return what didn’t work out for me and get other modules that suit my needs. Hope this helps because you really have to spend time with monitors/speakers in different listing situations to see if they work out for you.

hi mate, the price is a good point. i listened to alot of studio speakers(adam audio, krk, presonius, jbl,and so on.) at a closed room inna store called "Music Store" in cologne, germany. when i was there the focal evo 80 and evo twins and the tannoy gold 7 sounded both "better" like more warm and more full of depth than the Yamaha's. They felt 3-d somehow haha, like the sound is more around u. The Yamaha HS8 sounded not that good in that room BUT they sounded sooooo good when a friend had then a few years ago and we where listening to them. i dunno, maybe it was the setup of the speakers at the store that wasnt right. u know i like to hear alot details in my music(i listen to rnb, some pop and house stuff) but also like when the bass is hitting good, im not producing or mixing yet so i just need good, clear sound^^ So i was pretty sure imma buying the Focals, either the Evo 80 or the Evo twins but as u said, price is a thing when u pay either 299,- or 440,- for one speakers atm in euros =) i might switch my decision and either go with the tannoy, but the gold 8 then or the yamaha, if i will miss bass, i just trow in a rly cheap Mackie CR8S-XBT Sub for 200,- and i will be fine i guess. my room is only about 11 feet x 9 feet so i GUESS bass will be fine. U may say i should buy 5 or 6 or 6,5 with that small room size, but i like my music loud and alot bass and amybe moving soon to a house so^^. Maybe the tannoy are "the best of both worlds" im not sure yet haha thx for the great video!!!

Try out some pure piano runs using the focals. Piano notes in the low register can cause some very obvious distortion on some focals that other instruments and full mixes don't cause.

So if they are at the same price which would you purchase. Just sold my Focal alpha 50 evo's still in the dillema of whether upgrade to 65's or try the hs8s instead. I do think Focal alpha's soundstage and imaging is good but just cannot stand with its midrange (its a little bit reccessed and v-shape so I could not have the full picture of how my guitar sounds when I am tracking my guitar). Would you consider HS8s better at tracking guitar using amp sims(such as neural dsp's plugins)? :)
@jltbk5420
@jltbk5420 9 месяцев назад
The price point is not the same. You’d pay $200 more for the alpha series same size 8 inch. IMO the focal sounds great maybe even better than the Yamaha. But for mixing I’d prefer the Yamaha just because I’m familiar with what I’m hearing. They’re flat and for the most part what you’re hearing is most accurate to what will translate in the car or ear buds. If that makes sense. If you’re asking which one should you buy over one or the other. I’d buy both and keep them to demo them against one another and make my decision that way. Return the one you’re least satisfied with. What I like may not work for you that why I say demo them. Just make sure you purchase from someone who has a good return policy.

I recommend to try subwoofer with these monitors. Both Yamaha and Focals have low bass. If you produce hip hop you need a lot of bass and only sub can give that. I recommend any sub around 10 inch or more in size - like KRK S10 or if you can spend more than take Neumann KH 750 DSP. And it will never be not loud enough because subs have their own volume and crossover controls which allow you to instantly have more bass or less bass - depending on workflow.

Tbh that was my 1st choice but I had a budget. When I get a dedicated studio space I’ll definitely put money where it’s needed (monitoring-acoustic treatment).
@indyawichofficial1346
@indyawichofficial1346 4 месяца назад
Not sure really if a proportion of the praise of the "correction/compensation" feats on various monitors seriously equals its real usability in terms of "solution" to the room and placement. Given the obvious marketing hype, these switches are there to fiddle with the monitor response to compensate for acoustics in particular. One technical fact worth consideration is, that the studio monitor is originally constructed and tuned to perform as flat as possible across the bandwidth in which it is physically able to reproduce the sound. The flat performance is crucial part here. Engaging any kind of room correction (usually via low shelf eq), or high / low trim, directly influences the original flat performance of the monitor, usually as an attempt to sort out the missing or inadequate acoustics. As much as these functions are useful, they can (and quite often are) be also misleading, when engaged. Most of the time, when one needs to "correct" monitor, the issue is the room. The prosumer market expansion lead the music gear brands to develop and offer quite impressive tools for money and quality previously unheard of. Home studio monitoring is a great example. 25 years ago, there were no 8" bass monitors of similar quality for a price the low end/mid end is offered today, not to mention the quality. Thousands of the dollars were invested into rooms and monitors back in the days, today a very good sounding monitor sounds 20% of the price. As the brands are dealing with many new customers buying various affordable monitors, (such as 8") they realized that many semi pro-sumer's preferences do not consider acoustics as vital investment, yet want buy big monitors. Acoustics do not change monitor's performance, but they affect the listener's perception, and the difference between the treated/untreated room is huge. Now without room correction function many brands could be potentially facing bad reputation, coming unjustly from the users complaining about monitor's performance, although the problem is their untreated room or wrong setup. With a bunch of a fiddles at the back og the monitor one can satisfy his "sound" taste, thinking the troubles had been overcome. The truth is, no one can cheat physics.

@@indyawichofficial1346 Everything you’ve mentioned hit the nail on the head. Treatment is the most important part of a music studio. This is exactly what I mentioned in the video before upgrading monitors put that money into treatment however my motivation for upgrading was based on my last set of 8 inch monitors (Yamaha) giving sounds they were busted. If I could do it all over again I’d buy another pair of Yamaha’s. They just sound true to the source. But I agree most of consumer studio monitors can get the job done as long as you train your ear to what the speaker does. In my experience the Krk exaggerates the low end,same as the JBL. As long as you compensate that in the mix any studio monitors would be good but they’d really shine with proper acoustics. Unfortunately I don’t have the luxury of properly treating my set up do to the room I’m using :(

@@TachyonTheImmortal Yes I do still have the Adam speakers. The mid range in the Adam’s are decent however it’s hard to compare the Adam’s I have to the focals due to the size of both of them. My Adam’s are 7” and focals 8”. So the bass in the Adam’s in my room Imo are almost non existent. But that’s just me. My space is untreated and it’s rather large for that size. That wont work you need to take those back get some 5" or 6 inch moniots and a sub and set it up so the cutoff frequency has no gaps 85 - 100hz thats how you take care of your spl problem the overload production is from low frequencies at high spl thats how you destroy speakers.

@@jltbk5420 yeah it's it's because you're sitting so close to the camera. It's hard to see how far away you are from the speakers, but as long as you've got three feet or more from you and the speaker and then 3 feet from the back wall minimal then the eights are a good choice. Any less than that I still go with the recommendation of going with a smaller monitor and a sub. Especially because with room acoustics the low end is the hardest to tune properly. Moving your sub around while taking room measurements can give you a massive leap in acoustic response over the inability to move your speakers.
