They were mostly a group of brothers and had a Jackson 5 style abusive father who pushed them into stardom. Like with the Jackson 5, it turns out one of the kids (Brian Wilson) was a musical genius and a gifted singer. So the early Beach Boys albums are simple surf rock songs with great harmonies, but by 1966 when Pet Sounds came out, Brian Wilson came into his own as a songwriter and wrote some truly incredible stuff. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones actually got along great. In fact the Beatles helped the rolling stones get started by writing a song or two for them. The contrast was more in the publics eye, but they were actually friends.

“A world without love” by Peter and Gordon was written by Lennon/McCartney. They didn’t think it sounded Beatley enough for themselves. Paul shared the third floor of the Asher home with Peter Asher and was going out with his sister, model Jane Asher.

On Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson got full control and used all these studio musicians. It was a huge and crazy project with Brian Wilson really shining in his experimentation. It drove the Beatles to up their game.

The Beach Boys only made beach music for 3 years off their very long career. Starting from their album Today! Released in 1965, They left the surf/car/beach music and started to write very artistic and personal music

"Love Me Do" was not only one of the Beatles first hits in 1964, but it was released as the B-side of their final hit -- the one that was just released a few months ago, "Now and Then"

Jan and Dean were Beach Boys contemporaries, but a tragic accident injured one of them and their career kinda vanished after that. But I saw them in like 1980 or 81 doing a USO tour. Sadly, it was apparent which one was in the accident. 😢

That’s it man, if you know what to look for you can see how the Beatles lit a fire…I also want to say it wasn’t just their look and sound, but as you point out, the creativity. They gave music a big push towards having meaning and artistic depth that was world changing, and that’s for all the musicians and audiences that followed. Top 40 is an industry concept that turns music into a product to be churned out and sold…to a world being instructed what their tastes should be. The Beatles brought pure creativity into the conversation. It has been pointed out that by the mid 60s record executives had no idea why things were selling and what people wanted. Every weirdo with a guitar and gold earring was getting signed as they threw spaghetti against the wall to see what would stick. But cream rises to the top and in the end it was an incredible era of music and a time of real work to raise the consciousness of the people. Power to the people! And yeah, I heard all those Beatles songs first time played on the radio. They don’t get old. I also want to send some love to those incredible black artists…who kept their soul and musical integrity while bringing it to the world. Few of the white artist could say that. For that reason I don’t really compare them to the Beatles. They were there first, and all the best white artists knew it…and loved them for it. Music is colorblind. (Seriously I was a 10 yo white kid in SF, walking down the street singing with James Brown on my transistor radio, “say it loud, I’m black and I’m proud!”. I even understood what it meant…music is…..something.

most of the singles (considered by many there best songs) like paperback rider, day tripper, we can work it out etc. weren’t even on there albums! i truly do recommend listening to the singles from the albums at the same time in the same reaction so you can get a better feel for where there were at the time rather than retroactively listening to past masters. huge fan can’t wait for rest of videos!!!

The Beatles and Rolling Stones had friendly lifetime rivalry. The Beatles wrote them their first hit song. “I wanna be your man”.

Never forget, the first hit for the Stones was I Wanna Be Your Man.

"Surf City" was written by Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, and Jan and Dean were friends with the members of the group, and toured with them. They developed a similar style of background harmonies and sunny tunes. Jan Berry was a superb producer, too, although Brian was pretty much the best producer and arranger in the land. Lots of fun J & D tunes -- they easily belong in the Rock Hall of Fame. "Drag City" is a great one by them.

The Beach Boys' last song about surfing was in 1964, two years before Pet Sounds, not to mention Smile. Their songs were way more complex and varied than they get credit for. Also, Surf City by Jan and Dean was co-written by Brian Wilson, the main songwriter of the Beach Boys.

I noticed "Go Away Little Girl". It said Steve Lawrence (he did record that song) but the person it showed singing it was Donny Osmond. (He recorded it also).

One of the reasons why Beatles didn’t have that many hits at the end was because John Lennon made a comment about the Beatles being more popular the Jesus, and that didn’t go down that well with the Americans at the time

The most important part of this is just how incredibly different the end of the 60s are from the beginning. No time period in human history has ever seen that much cultural change, where that many people tried completely new things. At the end of the 50s, the hippest thing was Rock n' Roll, which had existed for the whole decade, plus the same soft Pop songs. That remained the case until the Beatles came around, and at the end of the 60s, you had true Pop-Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Proto-Punk, Psychedelic Rock, Folk Pop and Folk Rock, and even Prog Rock. And no one has ever been the first to do as many things as The Beatles were. It's kind of uncountable just how many things they were the first to do, I'll learn about something new all the time. But a pretty important one is that ever since radio, the first Pop songs were always 2-3 minutes long because they wanted to cram as many songs as possible on the radio, which is why so many of the early Beatles songs are so short. Then in '64, The Animals' version of House of the Rising Sun was over 4 minutes, and I think they had to cut it short. But in '68, the Beatles absolutely smashed that with Hey Jude coming in at over 7 minutes, and they basically said "the radio will play it because it's The Beatles," which turned out to be true. And from that point on, there were much longer songs on the radio, especially in the 70s with Prog Rock and everything. Even by the 90s, songs were still commonly around 5 minutes long. We've kind of regressed back to 2-3 minute songs nowadays, though, because of streaming.

He was the Beatles’ idol; he inspired them to write more serious music and he broke the mold of radio success formula. Songs were typically 2-3 minutes, and mostly pop and love songs. Dylan wrote long songs with serious subjects and mature, clever lyrics

you need to explore Roy Orbison. He is also the GOAT.

Good to see the quality (or lack) of rock/pop music when The Beatles came on the scene. Early 60s pop rock was kinda sad. Actually, 50s rock had a better/harder edge with early Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis to name a few. Doing this video puts the early Beatles in a better context and helps younger folks realize what they brought to pop music in the mid 60s.

I was born in 1964. So I was really not identifying with that type of music from before the Beatles. It sounded the same as the 50s genre of music. The difference in music before the Beatles and after is like night and day. Thank God for the creation of the Beatles and their music. A whole new world.

Really glad you did this. The song that sounded like it had heavy metal Drumming was a modern video/cover of the original song, so it was very out of place in this video, but you can definitely see the influence of the Beatles throughout the sixties: longer hair, matching suits to then psychedelic fashion, etc. They continuously moved the marker. A less obvious influence here and who directly influenced the Beatles to move from writing music to their female fans to more personal lyrics is Bob Dylan, another artist worth examining.

Fun fact: Roy Orbison/Pretty Woman later joined George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne in the Traveling Wilburys (years after The Beatles). Also, the sounds of Motown was just amazing! You may later want to check out The Byrds - some good songs.

Early Beach Boys were very much "surf", "girls", and "cars" driven but when the leader of the band Brian Wilson decided to write about more introspective things like heartbreak, identity, and fear of change? That's when they made Pet Sounds! Highly recommend reading into the album before going into it, as well as the scrapped follow up album "Smile"!

One last thing… In 1964, when the Beatles broke through with their number one hits, they were televised on the Ed Sullivan show, which reached millions of households in America. Back then, songwriters and musicians were separate entities. You would have really good songwriters pitch their songs to the producers of music, and then they would go on to pick appropriate musicians to play the song. And then, they would bring in singers, which were a separate thing also, to put the icing on the cake and sell the single.. the Beatles changed the rules. They came in as Singer songwriters, but they played their own instruments and sang the songs. They were the whole package in one. Those young teenagers sitting at home watching the Ed Sullivan show, saw the Beatles on TV, and were inspired to do exactly the same thing. There were a lot of copies out there, because everybody wanted to break into the scene at that point. A few of them did, riding on the coat tails of The Beatles. These days, it’s pretty much common place to see a band play their own songs and sing them, but before 1964 and the Beatles breakthrough, it just wasn’t done at all. They changed the rules.

The first LP (album) I ever bought, was in 1962. I know that from this video because it had many of the 1962 hits on it but I didn't realise until I got it home that they were cover versions, though as I hadn't heard the originals it didn't much matter at the time. I'd bought it from Woolworths. It was the Embassy label. My older siblings had just got our first record player. They were into Elvis but by my time I was into The Beatles.

Peter Asher of Peter and Gordon (World Without Love) became the first head of A&R for Apple Records, then went on to become one of the top managers and producers in the industry. Paul McCartney wrote World Without Love. John didn’t like it so Paul gave it to Peter and it became No. 1. John and Paul wrote I Want to Hold Your Hand in Peter’s mother’s music room in the basement of their house. Peter’s mother taught music and tutored George Martin. It was a circle of talent. According to Peter he was also the inspiration for the look of Austin Powers.

The Supremes were everywhere when I was growing up and we listened to them right along with The Beatles. They were very much part of the 60s sound. They do not get enough love these days.

I had the exact same reaction to David Rose' 'The Stripper' while watching this. Just like "What? My mans went in" Love this series, Darius. I'm doing the same thing currently. Listening through The Beatles and loving it more than I thought I would.

I was thirteen when The Beatles hit the stage. The greatest thing since PB&J! We started growing our hair long, had to have the peg tight pants and Beattle boots.

I would love to see your reaction to the #1s of the 70's. My favorite decade of music. Such amazing growth and change from 1970 - 1979. Probably more than any other decade in my lifetime. The rise of the singer/songwriters, disco, the beginning of punk and new wave, rock gets heavier. And the musicianship! Talent off the charts. Give it a try.

I Want to Hold Your Hand (and the flip side, I Saw Her Standing There) was The Beatles breakout hit (a double sided hit at that). At the same time that huge hit came out, the Beatles at one point had five or six of their songs in the Top Ten ALL AT ONCE. There's never been that kind of domination of the charts before or since.

The problem with that video collection is it doesn't play enough of each song to get the feel of the tune. They could have added just a _few_ seconds more to each clip.

As someone who lived through every year of the decade let me say that was a great trip down memory lane. Lots of great songs in there that rivaled the Beatles that you can't really pick up on in just a three second clip. Check out "Love is Blue" when you get the chance, as an example.

I was born in late 1959. From the time I was a baby until I was 10 years old, this was my soundtrack, and I am a musician today because of it. What an amazing time. I can answer a fuckton of questions for you if you’re so inclined. The Beatles, the Supremes, and the Rolling Stones dominated the decade, not to mention all the one-hit wonders. Motown was also born during this period, giving us an amazing catalog of great songs. From 1964 until about 1988, music was incredible… now, it’s mostly corporate. With a few exceptions.

The lead singer in the Hermits was Peter Noone. John used to call him Peter No One..

In reviewing the songs that preceeded the Beatles you can understand what a radical departure they were and why they were so immensely popular.

Bro Pet Sounds is a BANGER. I didn't even know this till recently but The Beach Boys had an arc super similar to The Beatles, starting out with a super famous cornball hokey-poke sound then transitioning into changing music forever.

Dude you gotta get into The Rolling Stones. My personal favorite is sticky fingers but that four album run of beggars banquet, let it bleed, sticky fingers and exile on Main Street is second to none. Some of the greatest and most iconic music ever made.

The Beatles were popular in England a full year before they were heard of in the US. So they had a stockpile of songs out of the starting gate of the Sullivan show.

You really have so far to go in appreciating all the music of the 60's and also the 70's. Mostly the British Invasion and the American answer to it and MOTOWN! I envy you if you decide to take the trip. I lived through most of it I'm sorry it has passed. Music of the 60's was so much more than the Beatles.

I’m really enjoying watching your videos. People weren’t necessarily imitating the Beatles or trying to be the Beatles. Many of these groups were fabulous groups but what the Beatles did was opened peoples eyes to the fact that we didn’t have to continue the 50s into the 60s. And their songwriting blazed new trails and open the doors for people to explore more. The Beach boys for example, did an album that Paul McCartney said was a huge influence on the Beatles Sergeant peppers album. That album by the Beach. boys was pet sounds. The Supremes were supreme. Love them. And the Motown sound. The Beatles helped push out the conformist 50s that allowed people to dress and compose music and express themselves in the 60s. The Byrds were a great band, and those purple glasses were really popular. But a lot of the greatest music of the 60s didn’t reach the number one position on the Billboard charts including many Beatles songs. The 60s was a wealth of creativity, originality, musicianship and talent. The thing about the 60s was that you could hear all kinds of music on the radio including instrumentals. The Beatles opened the door.

They called those granny glasses...those blue tiny square things. A Hippie deal.

The Beatles still had number one hits through 1970. They had a total of 21 number 1 hits through 1970. And by this time, their whole albums were charting at number one. And even if they didn’t chart every song at number one, remember, they had 34 hits that reached the top 10 in the charts. AND they had 71 more songs which charted in the Top 40…meaning they were in radio rotation. And the radio was IT! We ALL listened to the radio all the time! So the Beatles in the 60’s through 1970…were ALL OVER THE RADIO EVERY DAY! And after they broke up in 1970, they ALL started recording solo albums and they were ALL creating hit records and winning Grammy awards! Paul and Ringo are STILL RECORDING!

Motown was a monster hit machine in the sixties and The Supremes got the lion's share of great material. They were all over television which is something the Beatles rarely did. The song Hey Jude for instance was given special air time in the evening. Word was put out that the Beatles would introduce a new song at 8:30pm on some channel. I remember my aunts and uncles coming over and at 8:30 everything stopped, the Beatles were on. One song, one showing, live. If you missed it, you didn't see it. There was no place to watch it again. They were that special.

Pet Sounds is a gorgeous album, you will love it. Absolutely beautiful songwriting, and wildly innovative in pop music. Pet Sounds actually inspired Sgt. Peppers to a large extent. And was itself made in response to The Beatles Rubber Soul. The Beach Boys and The Beatles had a short stint where they were trying to one-up each other, and it led to some amazing music. The Beach Boys earlier music definitely has that "surf" sound like you said, but Pet Sounds is a pretty big departure from that. Brian Wilson was a musical genius. Just listen to "Wouldn't It Be Nice" or "God Only Knows" if you want sufficient motivation to hear the whole album :)

Im 35, and I was so at odds with "Pet sounds" when I first heard it.. It grew on me and is now a must-have in my mix.

The Rolling Stones rivalry with the Beatles was mostly a marketing gimmick made up by the stones' first manager. In reality, both bands we're fans of each other's work and even hung out together. The real rivalry was between the fans of both bands, given how different both bands sounds were from each other, The beatles often going with a clean cut aesthetic polished audio production with an often wholesome and safe vibes. The Rolling Stones were a lot grittier, earthier, bluesier, darker, and more rebellious. So they were seen as an alternative to the Beatles that did there own thing and weren't just another Beatles copy cat. In fact, in 1967 when the stones tried their hands at psychedelic rock fans hated it because it seemed like the stones caved into peer pressure and tried to make their own Sgt. Peppers instead of continuing to do their own thing. If you do eventually get to the stones, be aware most of their first few albums consist of cover songs and it wasn't until 1965 that their albums consisted of only original material.

The reason why the Beatles had less hits was because the list only includes songs they released as singles, and a lot of there songs after 1965 started only being released on an album rater than as a single as well. This ended up starting something called the album era.

The Supremes were actually vocal group which were part of a family of many artists that came from Motown studios. I highly recommend going back to check out their greatest hits from the 60s and 70s. You will be blown away by how many hits they had. And you will dig James Jamerson on bass- he inspired Paul McCartney and many many others to expand the role of bass guitar in pop and rock music. Even John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin was heavily influenced by Jamerson.

The 60’s produced the best of the best. Black and white shared the charts equally. You were good, or you were gone!

So much to unravel here; 1 - Before The Beatles, long har was frowned upon, their popularity made it acceptable (not everywhere) to to grow our hair longer. 2 - Peter and Gordon had their first hit with World without love. Thgis song was written by Paul who wass dating Peter’s sister Jane Asher at the time 3 - Th e Supremes were hot in the 60’s. Motown Records run by Barry Gordie was fully focussed on promoting their catalogue of black artists . 4 - The Beach boys were the surfie version of thre Beatles. 5 - Thde Beatles wrote and gave the Rolling Sytones their first hit 6 - The evolution of music, style and fashion from the time the Beatles had their first hit was fast and furious during the 60”s . And here we are today looking back to a time when music changed for the better.

The Supremes were one of the greatest and most popular groups of that era. And why not? The songs were great; they had great lyrics, and frequently very deep lyrics. And Diana Ross had something very, very special. Her voice is distinctive, and her delivery is perfect.

And the HARMONIES written by Brian Wilson, and his genius in the studio arranging and producing their music puts them in elite company with the greatest bands that ever recorded. Don't sell them short. Listen to their greatest masterpieces, "Good Vibrations" and "God Only Knows" before you give up on them. They have a VERY DEEP catalog.
