Fun Fact: I see it has been mentioned that Nirvana asked Mascis to join the band. J Mascis started his music career as a drummer, which is what Nirvana wanted him for. Just think about that. If Mascis didn't turn down Nirvana, where would Dave Grohl be today. Another fun fact, J Mascis literally taught himself how to play guitar because he wanted to start a new band, but he didn't know anybody that sounded like what he wanted. He figured it would be easier to do it himself. Now he's probably one of the greatest guitarists alive.
Fun fact: Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth played together all the time, and Sonic Youth took Dino under their wings for the first couple years. Teen Age Riot, which you’ve already reacted to, is about the lead singer of Dino, J Mascis, becoming president.
Built to Spill has an endlessly joyful catalog you would do your self a disservice to ignore. Their first 4 albums from Ultimate Alternative Wavers to Keep it Like a Secret are all flawless.
Dinosaur Jr are really great with their opening songs, always bangers I recommend you to check out Unwound they're one of the best post hardcore bands of the 90s but severely overlooked
Went to see sebadoh a few years back and lou was running the table selling swag, really cool mellow guy, so glad he and Jay could revive Dino together again. So awesome live.
Repulsion came out in 1985. I taped it from the radio as a 13 year old kid. There was nothing else that sounded remotely like it. Husker Du was more like punk. Dinosaur Jr was completely different; melodic, guitar solos, but it wasn't retro 60s or 70s rock, slacker vibe before that existed. Sonic Youth was still trying to be a no wave band in 1985; they became more melodic after Dinosaur Jr.
You really hit the nail on the head, they are super underrated. I like how you noticed a lot of their influence on other artists in the alternative sphere. I've always heard some Dinosaur Jr in Rivers Cuomo's more energetic guitar work. I was waiting to see your reaction when you got to the chorus of Just Like Heaven, and you didn't disappoint! Great video!
Thanks, lol. But yeah, mate. You can tell right away their style is a reference to the alternative scene in general. What the hell? J Mascis voice is a style of its own. Thanks again for watching. Cheers!
The first time I saw Dinosaur Jr. back in the 80's when I was 15, J Mascis got into a fist fight with the drummer in the middle of the show. Once that happened the show was over. Saw them many times after that and there were no fights in those subsequent shows.
@@tonywhitburn No footage. Back in the 80's we didn't have phones. The show was in a very small bar and if anyone did videotape it, the footage is probably long gone. Most shows back then were in very small clubs. BTW, I saw Nirvana in a very small club called The Moon in New Haven CT. The show happened one week before Nevermind was released in 1991. The video of that show is on RU-vid. You should check it out. I even caught a few glimpses of me in the very front. I was less than 6 feet away from Kurt Cobain. Every time I watch that video, I can't believe I was there, never knowing that Nirvana was going to be as big as they were. I have loads of cool stories about so many bands that made it big. I was the music director at my college radio station, so I got to see so many shows for free and got tons of albums, T-shirts and CD"s. Those were the days. I really enjoy your channel and I am glad you are so into the music that I grew up with. You don't see many kids liking alternative anymore. I am glad that I was young when there was an actual scene. It was such a cool time to be young. Take care.
You should do a reaction to "Double Nickles on the Dime" by the minutemen. Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. were way into the minutemen. You could/should pair that with Husker Du's Zen Arcade which came out at the same time.
This was so enjoyable to watch! Dinosaur Jr. is one of my favorite bands, and I love seeing how genuine your reactions were! Hope you stick with them - they're a hell of a band.
Hi Tony! Echoing the sentiment of all the other commenters, your reaction to music is so fun to watch. I would really look forward to reactions from Modest Mouse. The Lonesome Crowded West and The Moon & Antarctica are two of the best albums I've ever heard. The former is over an hour long and the latter is just around an hour -- two unique and incredible listening experience in my opinion.
Thanks, mate. There will be soon a Modest Mouse reaction. I'll try to go chronologically with them, so I'm going with The Lonesome first. Be patient, and you'll watch it in time. Cheers!
I'm sure you are aware of Steve Albini's production work. He produced some very key albums in music history Pixie's - Surfer Rosa/Come on Pilgrim ~ Helmet - Meantime ~ Nirvana - In Utero ~ Jawbreaker - 24hr Revenge Therapy ~ PJ Harvey - Rid of Me ... the list just goes on crazy long. In 1986 his band Big Black put out an album - Atomizer that was a huge influence on me as a young man. His guitar work is best described in my mind as machine shop noise! It's singular when it comes to guitar sounds that I've ever heard. If there was an album I would suggest any guitarist listen too I would put that one on a short list.
Damn, man, now that's how you suggest a record. This month and the next one I have every album spot taken, but don't worry, there will be a reaction. Thanks for watching, for your words and time. I appreciate them very much. Cheers!
Great album!! Have you ever listened to the band Teenage Fanclub? Always reminded me a lot of Dinosaur Jr. They were an influence to TF, together with Sonic Youth, R.E.M., The Go-Betweens and some others. "The Concept" is probably my favorite TF song, you could check it out :)
Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness! My favorite album of all time! One of the most dynamic albums you’ll ever hear with twists and turns left and right!
When I studied in Amherst, MA (where the band is from), albeit never visited western MA before, I checked this album and it captures that aura of the creativity/artistry and landscape feel of this area - its nifty, i bet the 80s the prime era when people knew Dino Jr.
Well... I have a list I compiled from the books I read and some individual songs I've listen, but lately I've been basing my choices on recommendations. Thanks for watching!
Muy feliz de ver este reaction n-n Recuerdo las ultimas veces que te hablaba en repeat sobre ellos; este es por lejos mi álbum favorito de la banda. (Pd.
I feel like the dinosaur jr version of just like heaven has so much more emotion. J’s voice is arguably worse than Robert Smith’s but it just has 1 million times more feeling, dinosaur makes the cure sounds like robots.
I feel old and pedantic, probably because I am, but a little disappointed this includes the bonus track. The first time you hear this album you should experience it in its original form.... And, simply, the album should end with Poledo. All that said though, cool video, so glad to see younger folks discovering this music and hope it continues. This is a positive sentiment comment.
