Unsainted, and this whole album, is about coming out above and conquering life’s vices and addictions. The line “I’ll never kill myself to save my soul” is about not resorting to addictions or self destructive habits in search of relief. Corey’s (lead singer) mask is modeled after a burn victim’s protective mask and is symbolic of the restorative/healing process of breaking habits and addictions. The imagery of the church along side dark and creepy visuals, in my opinion, is to depict the dichotomy of life. How some can find healing in non-destructive manners (faith, worship, group therapy) and others elect to chase relief in the form of intoxication or self harm. This song is about choosing a path of healing that takes you away from the darkness and pain, without hurting yourself in the process.
@@jonathanlusk9302 I think he's referring to life there honestly... His divorce was quite a while ago, most of those songs were probably on .05, or that is one interp of this song.
Religion isn't "non-destructive". Sure, it doesn't damage the body directly like drug addiction does, but instead it damages society and humanity as a whole. Religion promotes values that is harmful for women and minorities like homosexuals, trans-people and atheists. If we take a look at the Catholic church it's really damaging for children, I don't think I have to explain why. So by turning to religion for self healing you become a part of those problems and a reason for them to keep surviving and halting humanity's development. Religion cause a lot more damage than drugs ever will. Also drug use ≠ addiction. The vast majority of drug users will never become addicted. And drugs can work really well for healing, not just relief. Of course depending on the drug and how you use it. Cannabis is great for treating physical pain and can help you change your values and opinions for the better, MDMA and Ecstasy is great for treating PTSD and psychedelics can cure depression and addiction.
@@hornet1065 turns out, if you make the extreme claim that religion damages society and humanity, you do need to "explain why," if any rational and sane person is going to believe you. In present day it is still largely debated whether or not a strong religious presence promotes peace and welfare to society. However, studies show that countries with religious freedom such as the best country on Earth (in my opinion America) are more likely to be peaceful than a country without. religiousfreedomandbusiness.org/2/post/2014/10/religious-freedom-linked-to-peace-finds-new-global-study.html The study also suggests that communities with participating religious groups are slightly more peaceful than those who are not. Granted, this is just a study and isn't bulletproof, but at least it's quantifiable and empirically driven. What you said was asinine and stated as if it's absolute truth. You choose only to see the negatives in particular religions. You act as if athiests can't be racists, homophobes, sexists, murderers, etc. There is plenty of good that comes from religious morals that you choose to ignore. ALSO, the original commenter wasn't even supporting religion, he was simply explaining what the song is about. So I don't know what the imtent of your comment was.
@@hornet1065 last point. You take extreme examples of the positives for a minority group of people (those with PTSD etc.) and use that as a defense for drug use. The number of people who use those drugs for actual treatment versus recreational use is next to nothing, so there goes that trash argument. Want to tell me drugs are doing less harm than religion? Tell that to the people on skid row and our rising homeless population, and all the opioid addicts we have.
@@tucanolegendasegameplays lol all good. Slipknot definitely doesn't fit super well in any category, which they have done well to purposefully create that dilemma. This whole album, We Are Not Your Kind, is all about saying F U to labels and characterizing and compartmentalizing their music, which I think is amazing, because the only other group to do that is System of the Down, but SotD is so different from other metal. This song has elements of Nu, Heavy, Death, and a few other different styles, you almost want to call it Corey Taylor Metal or Slipknot Metal
Omg so true 🤣🤣🤣 came out bleeding and smelling like sweaty pennies and 100% sure 95% of it was not mine 😅 best time you'll ever have (even being covered in the bodily fluids of strangers lmao)
@@Azrael261 see Heilung. I just went to their show in their US tour (which sold out every location in the first two days). Most incredible show I've ever seen.
Every album, the members of this band get new masks. It started back when they were practicing together before their first album, somebody brought in a mask and brought up the idea of wearing them so people wouldn't focus on the band as personalities, but would focus more on the music. They also numbered themselves from 0-8 to, once again, avoid people latching onto their personalities like celebrities. It sorta backfired though since the masks are the most recognizable thing about them and people latched onto the masks. They have always used very dark imagery in their look and sound, and that is a huge reason why they have such an intense cult-like following. Their dark lyrics conjure up dark emotions and give a voice to people struggling with those emotions that can't be open about it with people they interact with in everyday life without being looked down upon or pitied. This band is one of the greatest live bands of all time as well. Their shows are INTENSE. I don't entirely understand all of the imagery in this particular video, like the old woman and stuff, but knowing these guys, they created every shot deliberately and with reason.
Agree with the most fella. But wasnt it because their 1st live performance was Halloween, so they all wore masks, then agree with u, they carried it on for reasons you said?
MaBOi66 i think that for people that havent heard much rock or metal before will like rock better and then move more to the metal and the heavy metal later, thats how it was for me, i started listening to acdc, van halen and def leppard for example in the start and i still listen to them but i listen alot to heavier metal now
This is the point past blind fury that burns even more intensely but leaves you utterly clear minded. Vicious joy, I guess you could call it. Exhilarating. Btw I'm pretty sure that's how the Kaio-ken works.
If your a dick in the pit there’s no helping you. I’ve seen artists kick people out. However I do agree! I’ve been knocked down and helped up so many times! We are a fun crowd
Corey stops shows to help out too. I admire artists that look out for their fans even though their music is some of the fiercest and adrenalin inducing to come around.
Slipknot-before I forget. It’s a little older but it’s a banger. The masks are part of the theatrics and partly so the fans would focus less on the band and more on the music. It’s great PR music.
No disrespect but you are 100% off. The masks have always been apart of the band not as a get up or a costume but each mask was made by each member to represent themselves. Corey (lead singer) has his mask, the new drummer jay has his, mick has his, jim has his, ect. But each mask is a visual representation on who that person is. They update their masks with every album so show the growth that they have made as a person.
So many people get this wrong, it's literally in the title "Unsainted." This song is about one tearing themselves away from the religion they were brought up in and the sheltered life they led as a child, because they discovered it wasn't the life they wanted to live. "I'll never kill myself to save my soul. I was lost but how was I to know?" The angry mother figure in the beginning, then her face changes to sadness. Her trying to stop him from leaving. He talks about the change in their relationship and the love he lost. He was her sin.... He burns himself in effigy at the end... This all happens in a church.... Maybe it's just apparent to me because I went through it. Every lyric in this song hits home like a freight train.
Not particularly. Corey Taylor himself is atheist, wasn't brought up religiously, started smoking cigarettes at 10, weed at 12, and was using coke and meth by the age of 15 (by which time he had overdosed twice) It's quite far from a sheltered life. The song is about his, the general idea of addiction, and depression. Thats why when he says 'I'll never kill myself to save my soul', he's referring to how he will never take his own life in order to stop those feelings, but also how he will never go back to his vices in order to cure his depression. "I was gone but how was I to know' is in reference to how his depression and addictions had taken him over, but he was so caught up in it that how was he to know that he was that far gone. Thats why the line 'I'm finally holding on to letting go' is him talking about holding on to letting go to his addictions and depression - not religion.
"Yo they flipped that shit so hard right now, what?!" Ah yes, to hear Slipknot for the first time again... You definitely gotta go back and listen to their breakthrough hit Wait and Bleed, or even Psychosocial is good
Matthew Rodriguez my first slipknot song was their 2018 single “all out life” I just stumbled upon it a couple months after its release and reeaaallly didn’t like it. Give it 2 months and slipknot joins my top 3 bands, fuckin wild stuff bro
I know but as a metalhead it just doesn't sound like when someone calls metal rock. Elvis is rock. Iron Maiden is metal. Just to clear things out to someone who doesn't see the difference.
@@Partrees thats...pushing it, rock is rock and metal is metal..sure you probably could put it under the same thing but they really dont sound the same at all....hard rock is the closest to metal rock will get, and prolly folk metal being the closest to rock..but you do you ig
Bruh, I love this song. It takes me back to when I was in high school listing to their first couple albums on repeat every day. This song is literally making me feel like a kid again. I haven’t felt like this in ages. Slipknot, I’ve missed you.
Sheesh man I 100% love your Sunday switch up. Slipknot fans are called Maggots. Man to truly understand Slipknot you have to listen to their first couple of albums. And do independent research on them. A lot has happened to the knot but still giving us good stuff. You’re gonna have a slaughterhouse of new subs after this.
Slipknot is from a genre called “nu Metal” ( they can also be considered alternative metal, or heavy metal, depending on the song) but basically it’s metal but has some hip hop aspects inserted into the music(nu Metal) Other bands from the same genre are linkin park, limp bizkit etc etc.
@@Bourotte25 Ima tell you one thing. Metal now belongs in its own due to the amount of subgenres its sparked. There are more metal subgenres than the rest of subgenres. Also Metal itself has evolved to stray away from rock. Rock has low amounts of distortion, metal has way more distortion. I can't stand rock, I love metal.
@@ragnarokgamer6817 What YOU think matters less than shit . Metal is a subgenre of Rock , period . These are simple facts , if you don't accept it , I don't care .
There masks represent their inner fears. Sometimes fears changes so masked changes. As far as the song goes, it’s Corey Taylor’s representation of letting go of anxiety and addiction.
@@M_N0L3I think it’s not 100% based on some fear, maybe something that happened to them, for example Joey’s mask is for a memory he had as a child, that his mother scared him using a similar mask...
Yo, LayedBak!!!! FI YA F*CKIN REACTION BRO!!!!!!!! SLIPKNOT "DUALITY" !!!! PLEASE??!!!!!! I LOVE THE FACT UR EXPANDING!!!!!!! U are gonna get TONZ of subs with Metal!! AWESOME
Honestly, I had a lot of fun during this video. You are a really cool dude. Also props for not directly turning it off, slipknot videos are not for everyone ;D
I’ve stood in the mosh pit during this song when they opened the show and I never saw my friends again during the whole song. It was the craziest shit I’ve ever experienced and I will experience it again.
In case it hasn't been stated, the band are a 9 piece that always wear masks. Each member has thier own mask and persona, and each album they change the mask subtly, whilst keeping thier identity similar. The masks were used as a gimmick, but also helped them feel free on stage, giving them the anonimity to act on stage and keep their home life separate...until they became big and unmasked themselves. This song is about Cory Taylor, the lead singer, and his struggles with depression, self destructive habits, and suicidal thoughts. It's also thier 1st main video fro. The new album where they are showcasing thier new masks. The next song I would recommend you reacting to by them would be Spit It Out (live at download 2009). It shows you their on stage presence, how they work the crowd to hype them up, and why they are so popular. I would also recommend looking up the lyrics, as it will help you cut through the growls and see how good Cory is at his job.
These guys, especially their drummers, really go hard on their instruments. If you watch the video for "Duality", you can see that some of their percussion sounds come from steel kegs (like for beer) that are being played with a baseball bat. It also shows you how dedicated and crazy their fans, the Maggots, are as Slipknot invited a bunch of them to shoot the video and they completely destroy a house in it.
Duality - Slipknot, Before I Forget - Slipknot, Devil In I - Slipknot, Psychosocial - Slipknot, Nightmare - Avenged Sevenfold, Def. more but those are top tier
As shawn "clown" stated in an interview "the masks represent something about ourselves that we can't put into words. Being the clown also means I can't laugh because I know the truth. My purpose is to help others forget about it."
This video just popped up on my recommended list and its the first I've seen of yours. I know it's from 2 months ago but bro, it was hilarious seeing someone step into slipknot for the first time. I'll be checking out some more of the rock reactions from you. Btw, Devil in I by Slipknot is one you should definitely do if you haven't already.
This is called amazing chaotic energy. Going to a concert is an experience in it of itself. I've seen them a few times and its like a huge family coming together and enjoying the magic that is slipknot.
If you want a song that switches a complete 180, do “Buried Alive” by Avenged Sevenfold. Very drastic change of flow and sound from beginning to end, but still the same song.
I've had the pleasure of attending a Slipknot concert once only since they never come to my country. The energy and emotions that I've experienced there shall never be forgotten and will treasure in my soul. Also this might not be the best pick of a song for a first time Slipknot song. You just scare him away 😂
I love how you have appreciation for such a broad spectrum of music. metal and hip hop has a lot of similarities that I love also. Good music is good music!
Listen to Duality The masks are like a stage persona, they all wear different masks. If you see their older music videos, they’re masks have changed overtime 🤘🏼
Not really? Yeah Corey said that their masks allow them to release the beast inside them while they are on stage, but their masks represent what they are going through during that time. Like in Volume 3 Corey's mask was all slanted and stitched together to represent how he was always drunk or in All Hope is Gone that makes represented how he kinda stopped feeling emotions during that period with all of the shit he went through. I know that Corey's mask changes with how he feels, but idk about the other members.
@@viralpanda5590 The masks usually signify something personal about the member but it all depends on who really, for Sid in All Hope is Gone it was a somewhat tribute to transformers because he is a huge fan of the franchise, for Jim the Jester is supposed to reflect his personality. For Joey his mom had a similar mask and it "traumatized" him
@@alonattar3836 not anymore. Hell, Korn isn't really nu metal anymore either. Nu metal is pretty much a dead genre. Heavy metal is definitely a more accurate description for anything made by Slipknot since Vol 3.
Damn bro, just because you're a fan of certain types of musical genres doesn't mean you should hate on other ones, treat all sorts of music with even a little bit of respect, either way he says a lot of positive things about Slipknot and I am no stranger to Slipknot
@@greasychin9457 Yeah but mumble rap is pure garbage. There's still good rap out there like Joyner Lucas, J.Cole and Kendrick Lamar but people like Lil Pump need to fuck off.
Love seeing reactions to Slipknot music. They're deep and a lot for some people to take in. It's good to see an open mind and curious reaction. Slipknot intends to provoke our emotions, create an examination of ourselves and life, all of it. We wouldn't be able to understand anything good about life without being willing to look the worst of it right in the face, even if that face is wearing a mask. Much love!
If you haven't already found out, the drummer is the son of Max Weinberg, who is a super good drummer and was a staple in late night tv. His son was chosen as the replacement for their original drummer Joey Jordison.
This isn't "rock music" it's metal I'm not being an elitist but if you're not much into the genre this isn't the way to introduce him to it. You can try much softer bands and let it grow slowly
I appreciate your openmindedness even if it is hard for you to catch sometimes. For me personally(NOT WHAT I’VE READ FROM THE BAND THEMSELVES) but my own interpretation is that people should be allowed to find their own god in their own way! My mother is baptist while my in-laws are catholic and both have their own beliefs as far as who/what a person should be in order to meet their gods and the things expected of them. Personally I believe all should be entitled to live as they wish so long as it doesn’t victimize the innocent or encroach on others happiness. “I’ll never sell my soul” to me is saying I won’t change who I am to live up to your interpreteation of your mortally authored “Holy Book” to please your congregation. I’ll do it my way! Long as we respect each other it’s all good. “How dare you martyr me!” is about forced change, likely to be an example. I personally disagree with it all and am at the opposite end of the spectrum but I respect ALL people’s rights to live(respectfully and peacefully) their own way. I’m no priest or preacher, and don’t wish to be a role model, that’s just what I hear in this song. Respect and open mindedness can really expand your knowledge, understanding, friendbase, and overall quality of life! In religion nobody’s right and everyone’s right! Keep this channel going! It’s a great medium for different ideas to peacefully! Great channel
