My views and thoughts after a 300 mile first ride of a 2017 Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin DCT.
I rode this back to back with the Crosstourer (you can see my video review of that - • First Ride: 2016 Honda... ) so I make a fair few comparisons between the bikes on this video.
I ride it in urban areas, on the motorway and also try and have some fun on some twisties.
This bike was fitted with the DCT gearbox. An amazing bit of technology and makes swapping cogs so smooth you almost don't notice it and in Sport mode it is quite fun. Drive mode is too soft and for feels lazy and lethargic. It also takes a lot of getting used to and for me lacks the finesse of a manual for slow speed riding especially in town areas.
It has a really soulful engine with plenty of torque and it is effortless to ride briskly. It's a reasonably comfortable bike for mile munching but after draining nearly a full tank of fuel my bum was starting to ache a bit and for my 6ft1 frame and long legs, while not cramped in any sense, I could do with the pegs being an inch or so lower to be more comfy.
I give my final verdict on the bike but in short, a good bike that is a tasty all rounder. Enough power for the road and ultimately it's a bike with a real soul and tonnes of character. Not as comfy or as fast as the Crosstourer, but just so much more engaging and a lot more fun to ride!

Have had the DCT xtourer for four weeks and loving it . left it in D for the first two rides to get a feeling for it . Moved to 1 s and preferred it especially shifting down earlier . Generally when going down hill it wants to move up a gear . engine braking is better controlled 1 down . Heavy to u turn but will conquer it eventually . find the handling ok . however i do weigh 15 st and dont feel i need to wrestle it cheers tj

Have you tried the 18 Model with its updates. I love it in the black and rose gold. I am a fan of the DCT :)

No I haven't. Wasn't aware of any significant updates from the 17 model (except perhaps colours?). I think the DCT thing is a bit marmite. It's a brilliant bit of kit and tech I just didn't like it. Thanks for watching

I am six foot seven and haven’t suffered any buffet from the screen at all. I find Drive is a waste of time, especially turning in to t junctions. Makes it quite jerky changing up too early. Trying to accelerate on a motorway or dual carriageway slip road in drive is useless. I am using Sport 1 or 2 most of the time now. Haven’t messed with the torque control as it reverts to setting 3 anyway every time you turn the engine off. Otherwise, I’m loving it.

Sorry for the delay in replying...Thanks for the comments. Perhaps with your height your head is far enough above the screen to avoid buffeting? DCT is clever and a remarkable achievement, just not for me right now.

Sorry for the delay in replying...I wear a NXR which is the EU name for an RF-1200 and I get buffeting! I'm with you, I like a manual on ALL vehicles!

I do enjoy your reviews. I'm a great fan of the adventure bike riding position, even when they weren't trendy I was riding around on a KMX 200 :-) The Africa Twin appeals to me but once again Honda don't offer cruise control and having tubed tyres is a real downside in my mind. With the tubeless tyres I can fix a flat in minutes, so much easier than messing around with inner tubes. Like you I'd never take a bike worth that much or that bulky off road, that's what a 10 year old DR350 is for. I'm hoping Honda release a NC1000X (a NC750X with the AT motor, with the option of cruise or better still a speed limiter)......

Interesting review; as a matter of interest how tall are you? and how long do you legs have to be to reach the ground?

Will you be trying something other than Honda? FJ-09 (tracer), 950 multistrada perhaps? I've owned the Tracer and it was a very good bike. Upright, comfortable with luggage options and yet sporty.

Sorry for the delay in replying...Unlikely as they are my closest dealer and know me well enough to let me loose with their bikes!!!

You had the seat in the low position. In the high position it might have been better for the legs.

Thanks for the video, but why do you blur the speedo and tach? That would be helpful info. Thx

Do I spy a possible contender to replace the 650? I think maybe I do .... it would give you a completely different bike/option to the Fireblade and ideal as an 'everyday' bike (IMO) So, no confusion over which bike to take! The screen is a 'known problem' for everyone tall enough to ride this bike. This seems a popular solution as it gives a variable screen height and you can keep the original screen ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UknbQjc3euo.html Obviously there are loads of replacement screens available including a MRA and a Puig I believe. There is an excellent Corbin seat available (at a price) Or maybe try something like an Airhawk or similar to give you that extra leg room you need? Incidentally, I think they had some 'issues' reported with the DCT, so the manual version may well be a good call. Not sure I like the Black version in this (I have a black bike so not 'anti') just prefer the red or white/blue/red I think Excellent review as per normal! Keep the videos coming!
