Motocross Action Magazine tests the all new 2021 Kawasaki KX450X Offroad model at Cahuilla Creek with test rider Josh Mosiman. The new bike has a lot of carry over from the motocross model but Kawasaki has taken it a step further to make it a more trail friendly machine for 2021. A kick stand, skid plate, 18 inch rear wheel, Dunlop AT81 tires, rear rotor guard, 13/51 gearing combo, and suspension valved for offroad applications are some of the highlights of the KX450X. Originally the KX450X was dubbed the 450XC but prior to its final release the C was dropped to limit confusion at the dealerships when customers were making a decision on a bike. It is pretty much like the 450rx from Honda. There a motocross bike with an 18in rear wheel. The bike is sweet but it needs a wide ratio gearbox to be a good and true offroad bike. Thats why I bought the 2019 yz450fx because it has it all. The skid plate covers all the important items, wide ratio gearbox, tuneability, and you can lug the bike and it will pick right back up without a flame out.

why does everyone think all these X models are going to be green sticker and street legal. theyre just mx bikes made more suitable for xc type competition. theyre race bikes

Exactly! like it wouldn't be a kx at that point it would be a shitty dual sport with all the emissions and regulation bullshit which makes a bike shit lmao

The rear suspension linkage system needs definitely a skid plate which gives some protection for it. But otherwise this is a great machine for Enduro/XC.

Wide ratio transmission and heavy flywheel are much needed for both the KX250X and KX450X.

Do the 2020 and 2021 kx450f share the same clutch cover/outter clutch cover? Slid out bent my rear break pedal and it put a tiny hole in my clutch cover. Can’t find anything for 2021 but I figured they are practically the same bike they should fit the same clutch cover from a 2020 right?

I think your KDX is one of the timeless bikes. No one makes anything like it. You might consider just keeping it forever. 16 years isn't that old - I have a 54 year old Kawasaki and it still runs mint.

Damn this had me hyped and just like the '21 crf450r hype it let me down. It's just a kx450 with a few bolt-ons, at least with the yz450fx it's actual transmission has different gearing than it's mx counterpart and different mapping. This thing is going to be too aggressive in the tight and not have enough legs for the wide open

I was saying for how hyped up the '21 was it didn't turn out to be that great it's only slightly better than the '20 to a point where the average rider wouldn't even notice. People were also hyped that kawasaki would have a dedicated offroad model again but were let down when it's just the mx bike with some bolt ons

@@LolliWANG505 it's slightly better not really that noticeable to me other than the clutch. I've got a '20 and was going to upgrade but to be honest it's not worth it as they're not really that different. I was expecting to be completely blown away with the new model but it was more like meh but I'm just a b class rider who'd rather go out in the desert these days so maybe I can't feel the difference haha, each to their own👍

that would be a completely different bike you can't make a race bike street legal, they will never make a kx 250 or 450 thats street legal it would be a dual-sport with all the emissions bs wich completely makes the bikes shit lmao 🤣

Ima 270lb guy I'm thinking about the klx300r or the kx450or(x)which would be the best bike for me I want something that's gonna be a good over all bike. I want it to be fast when I want it to be and agile also and good for tails which is where it will spend most of it's time. But also want to be able to hit a couple jumps here and there if I want.

My dad is a 230-35lb guy and has a 2011 Honda 450r. We pretty much only ride woods/single track so you can make a motocross bike a woods bike with a little work. Honestly I’d recommend the kx450x or regular 450. The klx 300 will probably not have enough power to get out of its own way like the old Yamaha 250’s. You will just need to change the rear shock to fit your weight most likely but other than that and a spark arrester (if you want one, it does add hp) will probably be all you need to make it an all around great bike. I have another friend who is a similar weight to you who rides everything from a yz250x (2 stroke), 350 ktm, 300klx, and sometimes my kx 250 bored to a 270. So basically it’ll be hard to go wrong getting a bike some will just require more work to get what you desire out of them but my personal recommendation would be to get the kx450x if your dead set on Kawasaki but other wise a 450 in general.

@@settinhookzwithadam9548 you really can’t go wrong with either. I mean I follow the gncc series pretty hard and strang was on fire on his kx450 and last bit of the season when he was hurt Stu Baylor put a hurting on the rest of the field on his Yamaha 450. Yamaha is more known for its suspension over its history but kx is just an all around good bike. If you have any friends that have one or the other (hopefully you have a friend or two that has both) ask and see if they will let you ride them or go to a Yamaha demo day when they are close to you. Regardless can’t go wrong either way and buy from a local dealer who won’t rip you off. They might be able to hook you up with discounts in the future or maybe free delivery.

@@settinhookzwithadam9548 after looking at and sitting on the two bikes, the Yamaha is very heavy up top. If you want a lighter bike get the kawi.

Its definitely a upgrade from the klx450r, but still not at the level to justify not just saving the 200 bucks and go with the mx version and upgrading it for hard enduro. Just my 2 cents.

It's not $200 cheaper Tham the MX, the mx bike is cheaper than the X. The X has upgrades over the stock MX and carries a price premium.

@@hunterhill1013 is has softer valving in suspension for offroad riding, not mx landing triples stiff. 18 rear rim and tire for better offroad traction, pinch flat protection, ect. Geared down for offroad riding. It is just a kx that has been focused for offroad/cross country. You can buy a none X and do all these changes but it will cost you more than $200. A rim, sprocket and tire alone will be $500 plus

How is the kx450x an upgrade from a klx450r The kx will be lighter and fuel injected, but asode from that what else is better about this new platform versus my old 09 klx450

the 2020 kx 250 and 450 both have the rear disk brake gaurd but they took it off the 2021 models and only included it on the xc versions of the bike lmao 😂

@@ligmaballs2629 maybe you are ok with riding dirty. but BLM land and most if not all off-road trail systems require them. these manufacturers make a trail bike I cant ride on trails.

Not required on a track bike, so they dont include it. Its built from the KX450F parts bin.

@@ligmaballs2629 yeah, like we didn't all already know that, thanks genius. Give an experienced engineer an hour and he can create an air box that breathes well and a side panel that doesn't look like a 5th grader drew in in art class. For ten grand I would expect better

once you start getting too fancy with things the performance goes out the window, this is designed to get the most air into the airbox as fast as possible with no restrictions, its bigger this year because they couldn't put one on the other side because of the battery so it actually makes allot of sense how it was designed, there's not much they can do i mean its not like its just a square hole it flows nicely with the angles of the bike
